While Dokken is considered a heavy metal band by many, the band was one of the most melodic hard rock bands of the 1980s, which 1999's THE VERY BEST OF proves. The 16-track compilation focuses mainly on the band's '80s peak, although two selections are from the '90s--one from Don Dokken's 1990 solo album UP FROM THE ASHES ("Mirror Mirror") and one from Dokken's 1995 reunion album, DYSFUNCTIONAL ("Too High to Fly").
Nearly all of the selections prove to be the among the best of the whole '80s pop metal genre--rockers such as "Just Got Lucky," "The Hunter," "In My Dreams," "Burning Like a Flame," and "Heaven Sent," as well as their breakthrough power ballad, "Alone Again." THE VERY BEST OF is a fine overview of Dokken's best moments.

Their very best! Dokken :Was one of the very best, and talented Embassadors of u.s. hard rock/ heavy metal of its genre, tracks such as "tooth and nail,Dream warriors, paris is burning,mr scary" can easily prove it with no doubt, also remember that the best ballads came from the hard rock clan back in the day.
I recommend this Album to any fan of melodic, and intelligent Hard rock-metal Submitted by conan_saga (San Salvador, El Salvador) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Brilliant collection from a truly great band For once, the record company got it right with the song selection on this veritable "greatest hits" collection from Dokken. They picked all the good songs, so that the album had a retrospective type of feel, taking you from their earlier brash roots through their slick and glossy radio hits of the mid-late 80's.
Through it all, Dokken remained a non-prototypical 80's band, with three extremely talneted songwriters in Lynch, Dokken and Pilson. Lynch took axe grinding to a new level with this trademark flury of sometimes scattered licks, his smoking vibrato and hard, super crunchy riffs. Don had a crooning voice and an impressive range even compared to some of his metal peers. Pilson was sort of a behind the scenes hero, with a superb voice and songwriting talent, and who often kept Lynch and Dokken from butting heads.
Overall, this may be my most favorite "greatest hits" type album--there are a plethora of tracks and everyone you remember as your favorite is here. Good job, fellas. Submitted by dcampbell (East Stroudsburg, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
