By the end of the '90s, '80s nostalgia had fully blossomed, and there were more compilations of '80s one-hit wonders than there were vertical inches in the infamous Flock of Seagulls hairdo. Rhino Records has always been known for its ability to put together definitive collections, though, and this one definitely hits many of the decade's pop/new wave high points. Those wanting to delve more deeply into the subject should check out Rhino's fantastic JUST CAN'T GET ENOUGH series, which features many impressive obscurities. NEW WAVE PARTY, however, concentrates strictly on the hits. It's all here, from Toni Basil's cheerleader anthem "Mickey" to Thomas Dolby's synth-pop classic "She Blinded Me With Science" and Haircut One Hundred's engagingly twee "Love Plus One." It's hard to figure why the Cars' 1978 hit "Just What I Needed" is here, but it may be argued that with their skinny ties, nerdy glasses, and tight-wound sound, they were an '80s group even back in the '70s.

Wearing many theatrical hats for half a century, Sid Eden always used the longer version of his given name. "But whoever heard of a jazz singer called 'Sidney.'? I sang since I was two years old but never considered myself a singer. I was the soloist all through high school and had my own band, but I was doing plays at the same time. I was an actor. When I became a professional I registered with the unions as 'Sidney. ' Now, fifty years later, I'm 'in-one' singing and playing for myself and you'd better call me 'Sid'." The high school was on the North Side of a wide open Chicago which boasted a lively jazz scene. Carrying forged I.D., the adventurous teenager saw many of the greats who played the Blue Note, the Hi-Note and lesser bust-out joints: Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Lester Young, Art Tatum and numerous others. Working at record stores in the Loop and, then, on Broadway across the street from Birdland, Sid met many of these giants in person, sometimes forming relationships with a collaborative bent, notably, Oscar Brown Jr,'s legendary, ill-fated KICKS & CO. for which Eden served as chief money-raiser, Production Supervisor and Casting Director and the equally legendary Julian Barry-Warren Meyers musical about Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, LOOKIN' FOR THE MAN, which Eden recorded with Al Freeman, Jr. , Carl Lee, Dizzy Gillespie, Pat Suzuki and Academy-Award winner, Jose Ferrer, in an attempt to bring the musical to Broadway. Appearing in, producing and directing countless plays and musicals, Sid found time in 1968 (THEN & NOW), to collaborate vocally with tenor sax great, Zoot Sims, trumpet king, Clark Terry, bandleader and drummer, Mel Lewis, influential guitarist, Jimmy Raney and bass-player par excellence, Richard Davis.
