For their second children's album (following 2005's PAPA'S DREAM, made with Lalo Guerrero), Los Lobos pay tribute to the Walt Disney movie musicals, as others have done before them. This version of the Disney songbook falls in between Barbara Cook's traditional pop treatment on THE DISNEY ALBUM and producer Hal Willner's more imaginative, revisionist take of some of the material, STAY AWAKE. (Los Lobos appeared on the latter, performing "I Wan'na Be Like You," a song repeated here.) Put simply, LOS LOBOS GOES DISNEY could have been called "Disney goes Los Lobos" instead, since the group applies its familiar mixture of musical styles to Disney songs. At first, that seems more radical than it turns out to be over the course of the disc, as the band launches into a spirited version of "Heigh-Ho" sung in Spanish. This is the album that started it all for Twisted Sister. With the group's classic lineup complete and producer Pete Way (of UFO and Waysted fame) at the helm, TS put to wax its early club material and in the process came up with one of the greatest hard-rock debuts ever. "What You Don't Know (Sure Can Hurt You)," with its hypercharged metal riff, has been the band's concert-opener for years. "Bad Boys (Of Rock 'n' Roll)" is a testosterone-fueled singalong with a great hook and lead guitar lick. "Shoot 'Em Down," which received some airplay upon release, features the furious riffs and anthemic qualities that would characterize much of the band's material through the years. This CD puts together the Ganelin Trio's first two LPs. Con Anima was recorded in 1976 and released the following year by Melodia, the official (and only) U.S.S.R. record label; Concerto Grosso was recorded in 1978, but released two years later. The first album presents the essential elements of the trio's sound: wild energy, passion, a propensity to draw from all of jazz's history and pre-history, along with folk music, a wide array of instruments, complex writing, etc. The album is a collage of various bits of music, vignettes so to speak, linked together by piano, saxophone, and drums solos that are faded in and out -- transitions from one scene of a dream to the next. For the reissue, everything has been lumped into one 41-minute track. Sound quality gets precarious in the busier passages, but otherwise it is a very good recording, utterly risk-taking and freaky. "Concerto Grosso," also lumped into one track (35 minutes), is both more tempered and ground-breaking. Its parts are better integrated, giving the impression of a single work instead of a kaleidoscope of fragments. It takes the trio farther away from jazz into a realm that was hardly explored at the time in the West.
