The first solo album by the former leader of the Impressions, Curtis represented a musical apotheosis for Curtis Mayfield -- indeed, it was practically the "Sgt. Pepper's" album of '70s soul, helping with its content and its success to open the whole genre to much bigger, richer musical canvases than artists had previously worked with. All of Mayfield's years of experience of life, music, and people were pulled together into a rich, powerful, topical musical statement that reflected not only the most up-to-date soul sounds of its period, finely produced by Mayfield himself, and the immediacy of the times and their political and social concerns, but also embraced the most elegant R&B sounds out of the past. As a producer, Mayfield embraced the most progressive soul sounds of the era, stretching them out compellingly on numbers like "Move on Up," but also drew on orchestral sounds (especially harps), to achieve some striking musical timbres (check out "Wild and Free"), and wove all of these influences, plus the topical nature of the songs, into a neat, amazingly lean whole. There was only one hit single off of this record, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Down Below We're All Going to Go," which made number three, but the album as a whole was a single entity and really had to be heard that way. In the fall of 2000, Rhino Records reissued Curtis with upgraded sound and nine bonus tracks that extended its running time to over 70 minutes. All but one are demos, including "Miss Black America" and "The Making of You," but mostly consist of tracks that he completed for subsequent albums; they're fascinating to hear, representing very different, much more jagged and stripped-down sounds. The upgraded CD concludes with the single version of "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go." ~ Bruce Eder
CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as Mayfield asserts the shiftlessness of America. Set to a funky groove, with smart horn arrangements and wah-wah guitar, this song is a brazen attack on social mores, racism, the Vietnam War, religious impropriety, and Nixon-era politics.
"We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" is another track that poignantly examines the race and class struggles of urban America. This song is made up of more than just a static groove; its tempos shift midway through and powerful brass figures, timpani punctuations, and harp glissandos soon dominate the mix. Also featuring the powerful "Move On Up," CURTIS is a classic soul record, and its relevance is amplified by its quest for racial harmony and its bold anti-establishment stance. (Note: The 2000 reissue of CURTIS features nine bonus tracks.)

Rolling Stone (2/3/00, p.53) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Cut for cut, Mayfield's solo debut is stronger than SUPERFLY....Rare items: the achingly empathetic 'Other Side of Town' and 'Miss Black America,' featuring one of his many children."
Q (12/00, p.144) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...It wedded the big issues of the day to peerless songwriting that yielded such enduring classics as 'Move On Up'..."

For a man to have such a impact on soul legends such as gladys knight, the staple singers, and aretha franklin, you have got to be good!!! This album is a classic gem in my book!! America if you do not own this album, this is one to buy. And play it over and over again. One of the underrated artists of all time.

I usually do not like Rhino products. They tend to leave a song, or musical piece off of their reproduction, and it is ususally the one I want to hear. I do not believe this is the case. I had not heard this production in thirty six years, but it moves me now, just like it did then.

Curtis Mayfield's visionary album, a landmark creation every bit as compelling and as far-reaching in its musical and extra-musical goals as Marvin Gaye's contemporary What's Goin' On. Opening on the hit "Get Down," the album soars on some of the sweetest and most eloquent -- yet driving -- soul sounds heard up to that time. Mayfield's growing musical ambitions, first manifested on the Curtis album, and his more sophisticated political sensibilities, presented with a lot of raw power on Curtis Live!, are pulled together here in a new, richer studio language, embodied in extended song structures ("Underground"), idealistic yet lyrically dazzling anthems ("We ...

The choice of Curtis Mayfield to score the blaxploitation film Superfly was an inspired one. No other artist in popular music knew so well, and expressed through his music so naturally, the shades of gray inherent in contemporary inner-city life. His debut solo album, 1970's Curtis, had shown in vivid colors that the '60s optimist (author of the civil-rights anthems "Keep On Pushing" and "People Get Ready") had added a layer of subtlety to his material; appearing on the same LP as the positive and issue-oriented "Move On Up" was an apocalyptic piece of brimstone funk titled "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go." For Superfly, Mayfield wisely avoids celebrating the wheeling-and-dealing themes present in the movie, or exploiting them, instead using each song to focus on a different aspect of what he saw as a plague on America's streets. ...

No thanks to the paucity of musical genius in the latter half of the 1990s, tribute albums to the departed just kept pouring forth, although in Shirley Horn's case, she was repaying an old personal debt to her subject. After all, it was Miles Davis who originally got Horn out of D.C. in 1960 as his opening act at the Village Vanguard and contributed his trumpet to one of her comeback albums (1990's You Won't Forget Me). Not only that, Horn's understated, ...

The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion).
Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002.
You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America for the U.S. Only two songs on this set list are shared with In Blue, but that doesn't mean that the group returns to their slightly more traditional Celtic roots on the remainder of the songs. Sure, there are hints of that, but there are also four pop covers, two of them ("Little Wing" and "Ruby Tuesday") featuring Ron ...

Scott Walker Sings Jacques Brel
Scott Walker Sings Jacques Brel CD  (1981) (Import) Germany

Curtis
CD $10.69  5 stars
Import only reissue of his 1981 release featuring nine tracks including 'Jackie', 'The Girls And The Dogs', 'Funeral Tango' & 'My Death'. Universal. This CD compiles nine covers of songs written by Belgian composer Jacques Brel, taken from three albums by American singer Scott Walker. Tracks include "Mathilde", "Amsterdam", and "Jackie".
French songwriter Jacques Brel is to Scott Walker roughly as Woody Guthrie is to Bob Dylan. At a formative point in Walker's career, his sensibility was crucially informed by Brel. So much so that he recorded nine Brel compositions on his first three albums. This collection shines a spotlight on that part of Walker's musical makeup by putting all of those tracks together in one place. Walker's deep, rich voice bears more than enough high-dramatic quality to pull of the extreme emotional range of Brel's songs, from the drunken depravity of "Amsterdam" (Walker's version bests David Bowie's) to the desperate romanticism of "If You Go Away" and the uncompromising portrait of sexual violence, "Next." SINGS JACQUES BREL makes a strong case for Walker as (at the very least) the premier American interpreter of Brel.
Marc Almond once noted that Scott Walker could sing "Three Blind Mice" and "make it sound like the only song in the world." While it's true that Walker transformed the most prosaic numbers into unique, dramatic experiences, that's not to say he chose material at random or simply allowed his magical voice to work inevitable wonders without having to try. Walker selected his cover material carefully and crafted masterful, knowing renditions. He achieved that rare balance that distinguishes the best interpreters of others' works -- preserving the essence of the original while making the song entirely his own. Nowhere is this clearer than on the nine Jacques Brel compositions that appeared on Walker's first three solo albums. All of those tracks are featured here. It's logical that Walker gravitated to Brel; the Belgian was a singer/songwriter after Walker's own heart who told psychologically incisive stories of unremarkable lives, raising the banal to the level of high drama -- or at least high camp. Like Brel, Walker brought a measure of romanticism to the mundane and set his poetic lyrics within arrangements that fleshed ...

Tea For Two 101 CD  (2001)

Curtis
CD $13.19
Welcome! Here are some excerpts from reviews - You will find more on our official site: http://www.TeaForTwo.de => reviews-sectionFIRST LIGHTHaving been very impressed with their only other studio release, Dream Or Reality (1993), I was anxious to hear what this would sound like. Tea For Two was originally founded way back in 1985 as a duo. In 1987 the classic line-up of vocals, keyboards, guitars, bass and drums was established. After the release of Dream Or Reality the band went on to record Snapshots (1996), a live album with material taken from various concerts between 1993-1996. So what about 101 then, what does it sound like and above all, is it any good!? Well the music is classic neoprog in the vein of Marillion, Chandelier, Twelfth Night etc. But often a bit heavier like Clepsydra or tougher (later) IQ, without ever sounding too much like any of them. The music has everything a neoprog fan could wish for; intense melodic keyboards combined with soaring crisp guitars and strong catchy vocals. To sum it up Tea For Two has produced yet another strong neoprog album and for fans of that genre this is surely a must have. The best tracks are in my view: Heaven, 101 and Last Piece. Recommended!! EUROPEAN PROGRESSIVE ROCK REVIEWS:Tea For Two were founded in 1984 by Michael Schumpelt and Oliver Sörup as a school band of the 'Max Planck Gymnasium Ludwigshafen' in Germany. Michael played the piano, flutes and keyboards, Oliver the guitars. The early music of Tea For Two was a mixture of known rock ballads, blues and folk plus they wrote a fair amount of their own stuff. After Stephan Weber joined the band the style of music changed. Michael and Oliver began to redraw the stories, situations and feelings described in the lyrics and music.Released in 2001, "101" is the third album from Tea For Two and right from the onset this concept instantly grabs you. They have a huge amount of originality mixed in with other influences such as Galahad/Marillion and with superb piano, violin, orchestral tones and heavy progressive passages interweaving throughout, this album is a sure fire winner. The album opens with warm washes of synths and percussion then one hell of a guitar takes over with keys and piano. This is a superb example of the music contained on this album. The piano continues on the intro to the following track "Heaven" till Marillion type keys lead into quite complex but at the same time superb melodic swings of mood. Track 3, "Between The Lines", is totally original, thoughtful, ...

On DEFINITION OF A CIRCLE, Otis Taylor cements his status as a true 21st-century bluesman, not just because he began recording in the early 2000s, but because of his intensely modern, syncretic style. Using the blues as a base, he ventures far afield while still maintaining a definitive musical ...
