Recorded between 1981 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Michael Azerrad.
An undisputed classic of the American rock underground, the Violent Femmes' 1982 self-titled debut still shines with its original luster. Quirky, catchy, innovative, and explosive, the Femmes made what was probably the first acoustic punk-folk-rockabilly-New Wave document for the dispossessed. The formula is as ingenious as it is simple--a trio playing guitar, bass, and drums runs through songs of adolescent angst, vulnerability, and social/sexual frustration.
In addition to their distinctive, minimal sound--guitarist Gordon Gano's rhythmic chord progressions filled out by Brian Ritchie's fluid bass and Victor De Lorenzo's aggressive brushwork on the drums--it is Gano's singing and superb songwriting that earmarks VIOLENT FEMMES. For the most part, Gano sounds like a psychotic, self-pitying, hormonally crazed teenager as he whines, stutters, and yowls his way through these remarkable songs. This two-disc deluxe edition includes rarities and live tracks, in addition to the paranoid "Kiss Off," the slinky "Gone Daddy Gone," and the lusty "Add It Up." And, of course, anyone who was a teenager in the '80s knows the glorious "Blister in the Sun," a seemingly permanent staple of dance venues across the United States.

Violent Femmes Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews not that great The cd was ok. I really like the song "blister in the Sun", but the others aren't all that great. They are more vocal rather than musical. The only reason why i bought this cd is for "blister in the Sun". I was hoping that the other songs would be just as good but they weren't. When violence is good This is a great cd. I had it at one time and it got scratched. I got it as a gift for my brother, but had to purchase two so I could rep;ace mine. I think that it's cool to see a band make good music without becoming too commercial. The lyrics are very execptable I counted only two foul words on the entire cd.It gets two thumbs up. BEST ALTERNATIVE ROCK ALBUM THIS RECORD IS SIMPLY THE BEST ALTERNATIVE ROCK ALBUM. ALL THE VITAL PARTS OF A PERFECT DEBUT ALBUM ARE THERE. SIMPLY THE BEST RECORD THE FEMMES EVER RECORDED EXCEPT FOR MAYBE THEIR NEXT RECORD, "HALLOWED GROUND". AFTER THAT THE FEMME'S RECORDS JUST SEEMED WEAK. WHY DID THEY EVER SWITCH PRODUCERS??? Excellent debut I love this album. Apparently discovered busking by Chrissie Hynde, the band secured a record deal and this is the result. Raw and inspired indie pop with a nod to the Velvets ( Good Feeling is their Pale Blue Eyes),
this album i believe was influence of Blank Francis of the Pixies.
'Add it Up' and Kiss Off' are my faves.
You wont be disappointed. Submitted by fionarice (dublin) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Why has no one over 12 reviewed this album yet? I was talking on the phone to a cheerleader from my high school. She and I were dating at the time. The year was 1990; That's when I found out the horrible truth about who and what I was. In the background she could hear this album playing and asked what it was. I told her and she her reaction caught me off guard. "Are you alternative?" she asked almost in disgust. "I don't know," I said. "What's that mean?" She explained that alternative people listened to college music and that's what I was doing and it was weird. I loved the Femmes. That relationship was short lived. This 1982 release is a master piece of teenage angst vield in poppy folk punk melodies. When I was young these songs made me want to run through the streets like a maniac to express something...something, anything...being a teenager is such a weird thing. This album tells that story perfectly.

Violent Femmes album
$9.79 Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968.
On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)."
Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on the chitlin' circuit (Earl King's "Come On [Part 1]"), a Bob Dylan favorite ("All Along The Watchtower"), and one of his ...
| | Violent Femmes Hallowed Ground CDs (1984)
Violent Femmes CD music
$6.09 This follow-up to the Violent Femmes' classic debut boasts a taut, idiosyncratic, and innovative musical vision. On HALLOWED GROUND, the Femmes' minimal, acoustic guitar/bass/drums sound is fleshed out here by such unlikely instruments as celeste, marimba, Jew's harp, and banjo. The group's focused, frenetic energy is in the foreground, but singer/guitarist Gordon Gano's songwriting draws inspiration here from early-20th-century American folk, especially on the murder tale "Country Death Song" and the gospel-blues of "It's Gonna Rain." Only "Sweet Misery Blues" and "Black Girls" (complete with "game calls" from saxophonist John Zorn) recall the teen angst and alienation of the first album. Instead, the lyrics deal more with Gano's religious ...
| | Muddy Waters Folk Singer CD (1964) Remastered
Violent Femmes music CDs
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Violent Femmes songs
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," ...

Violent Femmes CD music
$9.69 1995, 21-track compilation for the British glam act favorably compared to the Beach Boys. Sony.
Drawn from the first four of five albums the band cut for Epic during the mid- to late '70s, Greatest Hits is a dynamic selection, highlighted by the two hits Sailor scored during 1975-1976 but in no way dominated by them. Indeed, the signature sound that the group perfected for "Glass of Champagne" and "Girls Girls Girls" is swiftly revealed as just one of several at its disposal. From smoky dockside cabaret ("One Drink Too Many") to nostalgically tear-drenched music hall memories ("Josephine Baker"), Sailor melded catchy melody to vibrant production, then layered heavenly harmonies over all, a trick comparable to either the Beach Boys or 10cc -- and at its most memorable, the ecologically prescient "Traffic Jam" (from the group's debut), both at once. Neither was there any slackening of quality as the band aged. The two selections from its fourth album, the dramatically surf-whipped "Romance" and the street-smart "Put Your Mouth Where the Money Is," are as vibrant as any of their predecessors -- and that despite the band's fame and acclaim being firmly in the past by that time. Indeed, the very release of Greatest Hits appeared to place a full stop at the end of Sailor's U.K. career, although the group itself would remain a force elsewhere in Europe until well into the 1980s. There has never been a straight CD release of Greatest Hits. However, 1990's Girls Girls Girls: The Very Best of Sailor serves up 13 of the original collection's 14 tracks, then adds three more. ~ Dave Thompson
