The album title refers to Daddy Mack's (aka Mack Arthur Orr) day job as an auto mechanic, but if he applies as much soul to his car repair business as he does his vocals and laid-back guitar work, he might be able to quit that gig. While he's not attempting anything unique or even doing it in an unusual way, Mack and his three-piece backing band personify Memphis soul/blues in a consistently satisfying set of mostly original (if highly derivative) tunes. Whether rewriting Albert King's "I'll Play the Blues for You" as "I Don't Understand You Baby" or laying into a jaunty, upbeat shuffle on the appropriately titled "Daddy Mack Shuffle," Mack effortlessly finds the heart of his R&B-laced blues. His fluid guitar lines are smooth and unruffled, yet create a powerful groove. Along with a sympathetic band, Mack's low-key riffing and easy, unvarnished voice on "Get Your Act Together" define the concept of a chugging Memphis feel. The disc's closing instrumental cover of Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto" reworks the song's tough riff into a blues format with Mack's most forceful, almost acidy guitar work on the disc, and is one of the album's highlights. Less of a horn-drenched affair than his Black Top albums, New Role Soul presents Robert Ward in a smaller, looser setting that definitely works to his advantage. Instead of taking the usual let's-cut-come-oldies approach, the producers let Ward create on the fly, and the results easily rank up there with his 1990 comeback album Fear No Evil. For most of New Role Soul Ward is backed by just a three-piece rhythm section of bass, drums, and organ, leaving plenty of room for his testifying vocals and Magnatone-enhanced guitar. The fact that Darrell Nulisch was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award does mean something in the blues world. Times Like These does make a person wonder why, though. While it's true that Nulisch's voice is deeply expressive and rings loud and clear in the way Joe Turner's did -- albeit much smoother in delivery -- and he's a more than adequate harp player, the material here is generic at best. This record, with its tightly arranged and conducted horn charts, muted, stylistic B-3, rounded-off lead guitar solos, and in-the-pocket drums, sounds exactly like what it is for the most part: a blues record made in New England. What passes for guttural blues here is played a bit sloppier by your local bar band. But blues isn't the only thing that Nulisch tackles here, thank goodness. It's his soul tunes, ...
