| | Ultra Chilled 01 CDs (2001)
Let's Dance, Vol. 5: Modern Collection (Michelle) songs
$15.95 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ David Waxman.
Despite the rather unfortunate title, Ultra Chilled, Vol. 1 assembles some of the most established names in down-tempo electronica and trip-hop, mixing them with some relative unknowns. The flow from Dido to Gorillaz to St. Germain to Morcheeba is deceptively smooth, as is what will be most listeners' introductions to acts like Zero 7 and Goldfrapp, with each song seamlessly blending into one another. The sequencing on the two-disc set is a little predictable, with many of the better-known artists ...

| | Rex Hobart Empty House CD (2005)
Let's Dance, Vol. 5: Modern Collection (Michelle) music CDs
$12.49 Those who were looking for an exciting new creative direction from Rex Hobart & the Misery Boys on their fourth album for Bloodshot, Empty House, are going to be fresh out of luck when they slap this into their CD players. And of course, it serves 'em right -- Hobart is a honky tonk man through and through and he respects his form, as does any worthwhile musician. Empty House is 100 proof country music in the manner of Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and Faron Young, and like a bottle of good bourbon this music has a way of soothing your heartache and reminding you of whoever it was who broke your heart at the same time. With this in mind, Hobart and his partners have the sense not to try to reinvent the wheel -- they just try to put a fine set of tires on it and let it roll, and Empty House is the honky tonk equivalent of a fresh set of steel-belted radials. Hobart writes songs in the classic style without simply following the path blazed by others, and his band plays with heart, soul, and concision that bring a freshness and emotional currency to songs like "The Good Ain't Gone," "I Don't Like That Mirror," and "Let's Leave Me." Just as there are tens of thousands of compelling stories you can tell within the framework of 12-bar blues, Rex Hobart understands just how many different ways a heart can be broken, and that a good honky tonk songwriter can find a great song in each of them; that's just what he does on Empty House, and damned if he doesn't satisfy on all 11 cuts. ~ Mark Deming

| | Marcus Johnson Smooth Jazz Christmas CD (2005)
Let's Dance, Vol. 5: Modern Collection (Michelle) songs
$21.49 His smooth jazz contemporary Dave Koz may be a better-known multimedia sensation, but keyboardist Marcus Johnson has been at the top of his game these past years as an artist, record label executive (Three Keys Music, dedicated to a sound he calls "metropolitan smooth"), and drive-time DJ on WJZW in Washington, D.C. While the label's catalog shows an equal affinity for urban-flavored pop sounds and more straight-ahead jazz, Johnson's holiday celebration, Smooth Jazz Christmas, is decidedly on the lighter, playful side. With the exception of the atmospheric, retro-soul-flavored "White Christmas" -- which features a thoughtful Fender Rhodes melody -- Johnson sticks smartly to the crisp organic sounds of the acoustic piano, working out bright, lively elegant funk arrangements of "We Three Kings" and the Donny Hathaway chestnut "This Christmas," while going more contemplative on other tracks. For variety's sake, he spotlights the sweet-voiced East Coast crooner Keith Ailer on a restrained reading of "The Christmas Song" and, more impressively, a welcome boogie woogie twist of "Silent Night." ~ Jonathan Widran
Marcus Johnson has taken the plunge into the holiday music arena. He’s compiled nine classic holiday songs and added his own special twist to them. He opens the CD with “We Three Kings.” His keys replace the vocals in this tune and, along with the saxophone player, provides a jazzy rendition of a favorite carol. Marcus shines on his rendition of “The Little Drummer Boy.” It’s an understated, quiet keyboard version of a song where most artists would emphasize the drum. Even when he goes into the song’s bridge, it’s never overpowering or too much. He adds enough of his own to “Away in the Manger” and “Let It Snow,” that at times you don’t recognize these tunes for what they are. This is not ...
