Jeff Berlin is a superb electric bassist, and the music on this CD, although it has its rock and funk moments, is quite jazz-oriented. On some selections, Berlin is joined by four or five horns playing big-band-style riffs. While the bassist is in the spotlight much of the time (including a duet with keyboardist Clare Fischer on "Imagine" and an unaccompanied "Clinton Country," which is a medley of familiar patriotic songs), he was generous in allocating solo space; there are occasional spots for Rob Lockart (on tenor and alto) and trumpeter Howie Shear. Attention was paid to varying moods and styles, with the result being a satisfying release. And any musician witty enough to name an original "Hello Dali" deserves attention. ~ Scott Yanow

Down Beat (3/98, p.62) - 3 stars (out of 5) - "...Berlin gobbles up massive amounts of notes like Pac Man heading down a long straightaway..." Jeff Berlin Taking Notes Songs Taking Notes Review

Taking Notes album
$7.29 To most listeners, Jeff Berlin is utterly unknown as a musician and composer; to progressive rock enthusiasts, however, Berlin is a god, ranked alongside Jaco Pastorious and Victor Wooten as one of the most exciting virtuoso bassists ever. Crossroads compiles his first two albums, Pump It! and Champion, into a single-disc "greatest hits" of sorts, although neither album had much impact beyond jazz-rock circles. Splashy keyboards and '80s slickness date ...
| | Terry Bozzio Black Light Syndrome CD (1997)
Taking Notes CD music
$13.49 This power trio has famous roots, and they've brought it all together masterfully. First cut "The Sun Road" starts off like a tune off of David Gilmour's first solo album and then vanishes into a driving, power-chorded surge of soulful rock. Next, "Dark Corners" is a massive rocker that pulls you under its powerful whirlpool of guitar/bass/drum frenzy. Stevens tortures the guitar into absolute submission without any predictable riffs. Levin looms everywhere, and Bozzio flows in a polyrhythmic ...

Taking Notes album
$9.55 Room is a Bay-Area quartet comprised of Rova's Larry Ochs on saxophone, vibes and percussionist William Winant, pianist and electronic design freak Chris Brown, and computer whiz Scot Gresham-Lancaster. Recorded between California and Holland in 1990 and 1991, this is one of more curious artifacts ever released by Music & Arts. In one sense it is free jazz, and in another it's new music and improv, and in another it's strictly improvisation based on cues -- like a Zorn game piece, almost. But then, it's also none of them entirely. Given the presence of plenty of electronic gizmos, the listener could not be blamed for assuming the worst. But the electronic elements here are ...
