This is one case where the legend really precedes the record itself. Cut for about 600 dollars in Jack Endino's studio over just a matter of days, this captures Nirvana at a formative stage, still indebted to the murk that became known as grunge, yet not quite finding their voice as songwriters. Which isn't to say that they were devoid of original material, since even at this stage Kurt Cobain illustrated signs of his considerable songcraft, particularly on the minor-key ballad "About a Girl" and the dense churn of "Blew." A few songs come close to that level, but that's more a triumph of sound than structure, as "Negative Creep" and "School" get by on attitude and churn, while the cover of "Love Buzz" winds up being one of the highlights because this gives a true menace to their sound, thanks to its menacing melody. The rest of it sinks into the sludge, as the group itself winds up succumbing to grinding sub-metallic riffing that has little power, due to lack of riffs and lack of a good drummer. Bleach is more than a historical curiosity since it does have its share of great songs, but it isn't a lost classic -- it's a debut from a band that shows potential but haven't yet achieved it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine With a sludgy, chainsaw guitar sound that owes as much to early Black Sabbath as to Kurt Cobain's heroes The Melvins, whose drummer puts in an appearance here, Nirvana emerges from Seattle's underground scene as standard-bearers of a style that ... Now I'm a lazy guy sometimes so I'll do a song by song review:
Blew - 10/10 - Gorgeous guitar and a notable bass line. One of Nirvana's best and a great start.
Floyd the Barber - 10/10 Ahh - the riff is utter bliss. NEWNG NEWNG NA NA NA, NEWNG NEWNG NA NA NA. Hilarious urine joke included as well.
About a Girl - 10/10 - The albums pop moment. Some of Kurts sweetest songwriting wrapped in glorious two chord verses. If this song were released later it would of been one of their bigger hits.
School - 8/10 - Won't You Believe It, It's Just My Luck? No Recess! Simple as a Pimple and pretty tasty too.
Love Buzz - 9/10 A Shocking Blue Cover. The bass during the solo is very impressive, Krist is an underrated bassist. Also Nirvana's first single
Paper Cuts - 10/10 - Possibly the best song on the album. Haunting lyrics tell the tale of a person locked behind a dor, all alone. The riff is hard o beat, and Kurt sure had a great ear for feedback.
Negative Creep - 10/10 - AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Pure Punk DUDES!
Scoff - 8/10 - Song about the lack of belief people had in Kurt. One of Nirvana's most intersting solo's
Swap Meet - 10/10 A Nirana song that is actually hard to play on the guitar! The riff sinks you in, and it features some of Kurts better early lyrics. Slightly less repetitive than some of the previous tracks.
Mr Moustache - 8/10 - Anti-Redneck? You're Welcome. Poop as hard as rock? Sure that's fine with me. I don't know how Kurt plays that riff so fast, He may not have been the guitarist with the most raw talent, but he could sure play the damn thing.
Sifting - 7/10 - The worst song on the album yet still really good. The longest officialy released (not including bonus tracks)Nirvana song on a studio album 5.22 is pretty long for them. The lyrics seem meaningless mind, but that was Kurts thing back in the day. Don't look to close for a meaning on some of these tunes folks!
Big Cheese - 7.5/10 - I like to use ful numbers but this song deserves a higher score than Sifting. B.Side to Love Buzz and all.
Downer - 10/10 - Absolute chaos in 1.42. Kurt at his political side. The one song that proves Nirvana were a punk band at heart. Fantastic crunching bass. Great end to a great album.
So just buy the damn album if you like punk or raw grunge. Better than Pearl jam :) Submitted by Antonio (Cardiff UK) Was This Bleach Music Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 2 found this helpful.
Best of the Best A different beast to nevermind, but if i had to choose between the two, id choose this simply because of pure, raw originality. Submitted by kieran (limerick, ireland) Was This Bleach Music Review Helpful? Yes No
