L7: Suzi Gardner, Donita Sparks (guitar, vocals); Jennifer Finch (bass, vocals); Dee Plakas (drums). Engineers: Jack Endino, Michael James, Daniel Rey. Recorded at Reciprocal Recording, Seattle, Washington; Radio Tokyo, Venice, California; Paramount Studios, Hollywood, California. Personnel: Donita Sparks, Suzi Gardner (vocals, guitar); Jennifer Finch (vocals); Demetra "Dee" Plakas (drums). Recording information: Paramount Studios, Hollywood, CA; Radio Tokyo, Venice, CA; Reciprocal Recording, Seattle, WA. Photographers: Charles Peterson ; Howard Rosenberg. The fitting middle ground between L7's punky self-titled debut on Epitaph and its thunderous initial outing for Slash/Reprise, 1991's SMELL THE MAGIC finds the Los Angeles-based band fortunately situated at the Sub Pop label just in time for the grunge explosion. On this short, swift nine-track album, the women of L7 gleefully mix metal, punk, and classic rock, resulting in a sound that fiercely updates the Runaways' bold take on rock & roll and reveals a kinship to unrefined label-mates such as Mudhoney and Tad. Gender issues are addressed with the charming subtlety of a sledgehammer on the hard-charging tunes "Broomstick" and "Packin' a Rod," but the record's true highlights come from the one-two punch of the raucous shout-along "Shove" and the revved-up "Fast and Frightening." Armed with barnstorming three-chord riffs and plenty of attitude, L7 stakes out its turf on SMELL THE MAGIC, impressively laying the groundwork for its mainstream breakthrough, BRICKS ARE HEAVY. On 1991's Smell the Magic, L7 begins to find the sense of melody to complement its distorted punk guitar assault. The band deserves ultimate praise for writing from a completely female perspective at all times, and the fabulous "Fast and Frightening" just might be the ultimate "riot grrrl" anthem. "Shove" pleads the case for mosh pit etiquette, while "Just Like Me" demands equal rights (and vices) for male and female rock stars. The self-mocking "Broomstick" celebrates any "rock & roll hags" accusations with a sense of humor. "'Till the Wheels Fall Off" is another standout, thanks to its relentless descending riff, and points the way toward the band's breakthrough album, Bricks Are Heavy. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Smell The Magic Music Review Purchase Smell The Magic CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | L7 Bricks Are Heavy CD (1992)
Smell The Magic
$9.29 L7: Suzi Gardner, Donita Sparks (vocals, guitar); Jennifer Finch (vocals, bass); Demetra Plakas (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Pauli Ryan (bongos). Recorded at Smart Studios, Madison, Wisconsin and Sound City, Van Nuys, California. After two well-received albums for revered indie labels (Epitaph and Sub Pop), the all-female rock group L7 signed with Reprise Records amidst the grunge boom of the early 1990s. The band's major-label debut, BRICKS ARE HEAVY, finds the Los Angeles-based quartet running with its newfound opportunity, and enlisting Nirvana producer Butch Vig (later of Garbage) to shape its punk-influenced "riot grrl" aesthetic into a bigger, more formidable sound. While previous L7 outings had a charming DIY vibe, BRICKS ARE HEAVY lived ...

| | Mudhoney Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge CD (1991)
Smell The Magic
$10.05 Personnel: Steve Turner (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Mark Arm (vocals, guitar, organ); Matt Lukin (vocals, bass guitar); Dan Peters (vocals, drums, sound effects). Recording information: Egg Studios, Seattle, WA (1991). Photographer: Michael Lavine. Unknown Contributor Role: Mudhoney. Whether it was Conrad Uno's production, the addition of more instruments to the Mudhoney arsenal (notably, Mark Arm adds organ, as can be enjoyably heard on "Who You Drivin' Now," among other numbers), a slew of brilliant songs, or a combination of the above, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge found Mudhoney coming into their own album-wise. "Let It Slide," the album's lead single, fuses everything from surf rock drumming from Dan Peters to a delicious vocal whine on the verses from Arm into a hotwired classic. It's not so much grunge as ...

The Rolling Stones: Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals); Brian Jones (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Recorded in London, England, Chicago, Illinois & Hollywood, California between 1963 & 1966. The first hits compilation of the Rolling Stones is still one of the most potent collections of singles that one can find. Listening to it in 1966 or today, one can understand how, almost prematurely for the 1960s -- as most of the material here dates from 1964 or 1965 -- the Stones set themselves up as the decade's most visible rock & roll rebels. The defiant, in-your-face fuzztone riff and sexually frustrated lyrics of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and the frenetic pounding punk anthem "Get Off of My Cloud" are highlights of a 12-song set that has no weak points, only peaks -- the louder-than-life rhythm guitars on "It's All Over Now" and "The Last Time," the wailing R&B of "Time Is on My Side," the balladry, folk, and soul style of "As Tears Go By" and "Tell Me," and all of the rest make for a body of work that's still amazing to hear decades after the fact. Appearing as it did in the late winter of 1966, this collection completely missed the group's drift into psychedelia, and ...
