On his second solo outing, 1994's WHISKEY FOR THE HOLY GHOST, Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan unveils a set of tunes that is more dynamic and cohesive than his spare, brooding debut, THE WINDING SHEET. Once again collaborating with multi-instrumentalist Mike Johnson, among others, Lanegan uses his deep, gravelly voice to maximum effect on these wonderful songs of woe, which include the hypnotic, David Lynchian "The River Rise" and the dark, pastoral "Kingdoms of Rain." Arguably Lanegan's best solo album, THE HOLY GHOST predicted that the perpetually melancholy Pacific Northwestern performer would be just fine on his own when Screaming Trees eventually split.

Q (8/01, p.150) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Lanegan had found his niche....scratching a deep-seated existential itch, mustering tragi-comic bleakness normally the sole province of Johnny Cash." Magnet (p.114) - "'Kingdoms Of Rain' and 'Riding The Nightingale' are laced with the sort of Catholic guilt and survivor's wisdom that point to Lanegan's Yoda-like future status as the last of his track-scarred peer group to live to tell the tale." Option (8/94, p.109) - "...This is grunge's soft underbelly, the land where trance meets folk and boys are sensitive, strong and extremely well-connected...Lanegan isn't afraid to go fast, but follows his rants with dusky ballads..." Melody Maker (1/29/94, p.32) - "...Brilliant...a monument to morbid, magnificent self-absorption...a dense but intensely moving piece of work..." Musician (3/94, p.87) - "...this isn't a `Seattle' album, at least in the obvious sense. What we find on WHISKEY FOR THE HOLY GHOST is the dreamscape version of that world...Lanegan is perfect in the role of tortured obsessive, locked in a world of uncomfortable urges..." NME (Magazine) (2/5/94, p.39) - 7 - Very Good - "...Inhabiting an instrumental landscape more sparsely populated than Greenland, sparked by low-riding acoustic guitars, glowering organ and a blackboard-scraping violin, WHISKEY is nothing less than a vocal tour de force..." Whiskey For The Holy Ghost This was the first i heard from his solo-projekt, Iv'e had this album in almost a year and now some songs start to feel old, but Pendulum, Carnival, Kingdoms Of Rain and House a Home are still great, Most of it are acoustic-songs without drums, and the lyrics are great. The only song i dont like about this record are Boracho and Shooting Gallery Submitted by ... (somewhere in Europe) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Whiskey for the Soul Whiskey for the Holy Ghost is doubtlessly Lanegan’s masterwork—a perfect evocation of the passionate melancholy that dominates so many of his albums. From the intense electric rocker “Borracho” to the heartbreaking acoustics of “Riding the Nightingale,” Whiskey displays with an emotional intensity never reached by Lanegan’s one-time band the Screaming Trees. Vocally Lanegan is at his best here, singing raggedly yet reaching the highs and lows of “Carnival” and “El Sol” with power. Violins (“House a Home”, “Carnival”), organs (“Kingdoms of Rain,” “Dead on You”), female vocals (“Sunrise”), and Mike Johnson’s ornate guitar work (like the impressive solos in “Shooting Gallery”) complement Mark’s voice excellently. Lush, orchestral folk-rock blends with restrained acoustic tracks to create a cohesive style that’s never lacking in strength. There’s no filler here; just the brilliance of a seasoned musician. Whiskey For The Holy Ghost songs
$12.55 Tiger Saw's Gimme Danger/Gimme Sweetness continues on the same dreamy path as their previous record, Blessed Are the Trials We Will Find, but at a slower rate. As has been probably stated many times before, Tiger Saw share a lot in common with such slowcore bands as Low, Ida, and the For Carnation. Gimme Danger/Gimme Sweetness is probably offering more of the latter, sweetness -- there really is not much danger here. The vocal merge of Dylan Metrano and Juliet Nelson tends to be a duel, working against each other -- the vocalists seem to be more successful when singing on their own. Tiger Saw draws on the formula of crawling at a slow, dreamy pace with sweet male/female harmonies, a pattern that Tiger Saw are great at but one that doesn't seem to challenge them or the listener. All that being said, the simple instrumentation and dragging pace against the languid vocals works in Tiger Saw's favor on this short release. One highlight of Gimme Danger/Gimme Sweetness is the instrumental, "West of the Sun," where Tiger Saw do briefly flirt with danger, slowly building tension with droning cello and picking guitars. Tiger Saw round out the end of Gimme Danger/Gimme Sweetness with a sincere rendition of the Wolf Colonel track "The Goodbye," finishing with an interesting depth that captures the lyrics of a farewell and showcase Tiger Saw at their best. Gimme Danger/Gimme Sweetness is another decent release by Tiger Saw. ~ David Serra
