Seattle native Damien Jurado's first album is an impressive debut that was sadly overlooked by many people still caught up in the hype of the celebrated Sub Pop Records and the aftermath left from the grunge era. While Jurado is responsible for writing hundreds of songs on his own, he chose 13 to make the cut for this album. Many are silly, dealing with topics such as purple anteaters or the circus. Others cry out as therapy for Jurado, trying to reconcile his parent's painful divorce or the feeling of being independent from a recent relationship. Still others are just fictional stories, woven by this man who is known in certain indie folk circles as a master storyteller. Taking jangly guitars and Jurado's awkward, yet soothing crooning, along with steady drumming and a host of other instruments, Waters Ave S. is silky smooth in its delivery and rarely comes up short. While not entirely similar to his later works, on its own, Waters Ave S. is a special treat that deserves a listen. ~ Kurt Morris

John Mayall Plays John Mayall
John Mayall Plays John Mayall CD  (1965)

Waters Ave. S. songs
CD $10.49
John Mayall's debut album, recorded live in December 1964, is a little unjustly overlooked, as it was recorded shortly before the first of the famous guitarists schooled in the Bluesbreakers (Eric Clapton) joined the band. With Roger Dean on guitar (and the rhythm section who'd play on the Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton album, bassist John McVie and drummer Hughie Flint), it has more of a rock/R&B feel, rather like the early Rolling Stones, than the purer bluesier material Mayall would usually stick to in his subsequent recordings. The record doesn't suffer for this, however, moving along quite powerfully, and -- unusually for a British R&B/blues band of the time -- featuring almost nothing but original material, all penned by Mayall. Nigel Stanger's saxophone adds interesting touches to a few tracks, the songs are quite good, and while Dean's guitar and Mayall's vocals aren't on the same level as the best instrumentalists and singers in the British blues-rock movement, they're satisfactory. [The 2006 U.K. expanded CD edition added five enjoyable cuts that round up everything else recorded by the pre-Eric Clapton version of the Bluesbreakers, including the 1964 single "Crawling Up a Hill"/"Mr. James"; the early 1965 single "Crocodile Walk"/"Blues City Shakedown"; and the February 1965 outtake "My ...

Go To The Line
Nitecaps Go To The Line CD  (1982)

Waters Ave. S. CD music
CD $12.05  4 stars
The Nitecaps had a pretty respectable pedigree for fans of early New York punk -- lead singer and guitarist Jahn Xavier had been a member of Richard Hell's Voidoids under the name Xcessive, bassist Peter Jordan was a roadie for the New York Dolls who took over for Arthur Kane in the latter days of the band, and drummer Sammy Brown was in Stumblebunny alongside Jordan. But the Nitecaps were an updated R&B show band, playing lean, soul-influenced rock & roll with the help of a four-piece horn section (who, as the Uptown Horns, would go on to a successful career of their own). The Nitecaps' first and only album, 1982's Go to the Line, makes it clear that this was a very good band -- Xavier could sing R&B with the passionate swagger of a New York rock & roller, guitarist Al Maddy's leads were tight and crisp, and Jordan and Brown were a rhythm section that could groove solid or kick out the jams at will. The horn arrangements ...

Visual Diary: The Mouth Of Boredom
Sergio Cervetti Visual Diary: The Mouth Of Boredom CD  (2009)

Waters Ave. S. songs
CD $13.15
Sergio Cervetti, born in Uruguay and a U.S. citizen since 1979, is a composer whose works include electronic, instrumental and vocal music. He graduated from Peabody Institute after studying with Ernst Krenek, Lazlo Halasz, and Stefan Grové. He went on to win the Caracas Festival prize and was subsequently invited by the DAAD to be composer-in-residence in Berlin. After moving to New York City he taught at Brooklyn College, worked for Virgil Thomson, and studied electronic music with Vladimir Ussachevsky at Columbia University. Cervetti joined the faculty of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1972 where he taught history of music, composition and choreography until 1997 and returned in 2007-08. Cervetti’s vocabulary draws from an early brush with twelve-tone and minimalism while his current approach is free and flexible. Each work is treated in an individual manner and may often reflect his South American, French and Italian heritage. A review of Concerto for Harpsichord aptly describes his style which “…does not make a distinction between folk elements, European tradition and minimalist aesthetics; they are all fearlessly and deftly blended together in a music that defies any classification.” –Ritmo Magazine, Spain Noted works include:Guitar ...

GO was the most satisfying of Mario's first three albums, but it lacked a major crossover single on the level of "Let Me Love You." Although the sensitive ballad "Crying Out for Me" was big on R&B stations, it did not break the ...
