(2 Customer Reviews)
Jesus & Mary Chain's gift for a well-turned melody only seems more implausible when contrasted with the thick, feedback-laden guitars in which they drown their work. This harmony of opposites has provided the fuel for the Scottish brothers' stylistic progression from shoe-gazing doom and gloom to straight-ahead euphoric rock swagger. MUNKI finds them further exploiting the myriad contradictions that mark their distinct, enigmatic (and very dark) corner of the music world.
Among the album's 17 tracks (the Reid brothers are as prolific as they are noisy), aggressive rock numbers are the order of the day. A calm appears in the storm as Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval lends dreamlike vocals to "Perfume," which creates a dub-like atmosphere wherein the normal guitar tempest does a slow burn amid synth pads and a club beat. There's no shortage of rock politics on MUNKI: The albums kicks off with "iloverocknroll" and closes with the confessional "ihaterocknroll," a caustic, gargantuan song which sounds loud at any volume. On "Fizzy," Jim intones, "Elvis lives and Bob Dylan's dead" atop sweet chord changes and heartbreaking lead lines that are the stuff of pop dreams, couched in the ragged guitars of pop's worst nightmare.

Spin (9/98, p.195) - 7 (out of 10) - "...MUNKI...is by no means a breakthrough, but it's certainly a sensible regression--the sound of confirmed adolescents fending off middle age the only way they know....MUNKI mostly crackles with the rude, restless energy that the brothers misplaced circa 1989's AUTOMATIC..." Entertainment Weekly (6/12/98, pp.78-79) - "...it's rock minimalism as usual--less glacial, maybe, but still able to sink ships." - Rating: B+ Jesus & Mary Chain Munki Songs Purchase Munki CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Radiohead Bends CD (1995)

$12.65 This album from U.K. rock act Jesus & Mary Chain features rare tracks.
The Sound of Speed is second in the trilogy of Jesus and Mary Chain "odds and sods" releases. This one isn't quite as essential as Barbed Wire Kisses (the first), but it definitely holds less cash-cow negativity and greater value over The Jesus and Mary Chain Hate Rock 'n' Roll (the third). The period covered here is 1989-1993, collecting most of the B-sides from Automatic and Honey's Dead. It's not quite complete, missing at least four B-sides ("Subway," "In the Black," "Terminal Beach," "I'm Glad I Never") and a small number of remixes. "Snakedriver" provides the best reason for picking this ...

$22.09 After delving a bit too deeply into glam on 2004's Youth, their first foray into indie recordings, Collective Soul straightens things out on its 2007 follow-up, Afterwords. Contrary to the implication of the title of "New Vibration" -- the hard-hitting opener on this, their seventh album -- Afterwords brings the band close to how they sounded about a decade before, when they were riding the peak of their popularity and when modern rock bands could still be heard on the radio because there was modern mainstream rock radio. If this kind of radio still existed in 2007, Collective Soul could still have hits, at least with an album like Afterwords that unapologetically plays to their core strengths of hooky, sturdy songs, delivered unpretentiously but grandly, as if they were designed to fill an arena. ...
