Beachwood Sparks: Chris Gunst (vocals, guitar); Dave Scher (slide guitar, keyboards); Brent Rademaker (bass); Aaron Sperske (drums). Producers: Beachwood Sparks, Michael Deming. Personnel: Chris Gunst, Dave Scher, Aaron Sperske, Brent Rademaker (vocals). Recording information: Studio 45. Photographer: Autumn DeWilde. The Beachwood Sparks are space cowboys -- although their self-titled Sub Pop debut most closely recalls the sound of vintage Laurel Canyon country-rock, its shimmering twang-pop melodies and gorgeous harmonies bask in a kind of interstellar psychedelia which lends the album an otherworldly glow. The hypnotically dreamlike instrumental passages which wind their way through luminous country-pop moments like "Sister Rose," "Something I Don't Recognize," and "Old Sea Miner" completely transform the album's chemical makeup. Rooted in the earth but reaching for the stars, the group realizes Gram Parsons' "Cosmic American music" aesthetic in its truest sense. ~ Jason Ankeny No American Gothic frowns here; Beachwood Sparks are a godsend to those music fans who revere the Cosmic Country sound of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers, but are put off by the dour indie dirges made by insurgent country acts in Gram Parsons' name. This LA quartet are all about sunny late '60s Cali harmonies, Bakersfield-influenced psychedelic country-pop jams, and a hippie disposition full of cinnamon pedal-steel and cowgirls-under-blue-sky daydreams. By infusing these retro images with a healthy dose of studio-generated post-rock sonics, Beachwood Sparks update Cosmic Americana for the modern age. The keys to their sound lie in Dave Scher's facility with lap-steel guitar and organ, and in the band's full-bodied harmonies. These elements are constant, whether on a Tex-Mex cowboy jaunt like "Silver Morning After," on which the steel cascades in jamming waves, or on an arena-style power ballad like "The Reminder," where it softly underpins the harmonies. But the band's finest moments are when guitar and organ play off each other in a psychedelic country-pop vortex reminiscent of a more succinct Grateful Dead, as on "This is What It Feels Like," a ready-made soundtrack for a Topeka Canyon day trip.
Q (6/00, p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...This is the best American rock debut since Outrageous Cherry's eponymous 1st album last century....a '60s-style band that also listens to Beck and the High Llamas..." Magnet (1-2/01, p.44) - Included in Magnet's "20 Best Albums of 2000". Magnet (4-5/00, p.66) - "...Picks up the melodies, instrumentation, mutton chops, mother-of-pearl buttons and tassled sleeves of California country/rock, and the jacket fits nicely....It's pretty..." CMJ (4/00, p.44) - "...an extremely laid-back set of alt-country songs that are sometimes shot through with garage-y pep but that just as often bring to mind The Grateful Dead..." Mojo (Publisher) (5/00, p.88) - "...Another lo-fi assemblage of pleasantly unassuming country rock....sounding more like Poco or Sopwith Camel than Buffalo Springfield or the Lovin' Spoonful." | | Ramones All The Stuff (And More), Vol. 1 CD (1990)
Beachwood Sparks
$14.45 Out-of-print in the US. This outstanding CD includes their complete first two albums, Ramones and Ramones Leave Home, plus a number of B-sides, not released on the original LP's: 'I Don't Want to Be Learned, I Don't Want to Be Tamed', 'I Can't Be', 'Babysitter', and a live version of 'California Sun'. Although their straight-ahead buzzsaw Punk may not raise eyebrows today, when these albums were originally released 30 years ago, they signaled a change in the musical climate and kick-started the Punk Rock movement! The Ramones didn't set out to create a new scene, they just wanted to take Rock back to basics and keep the songs short and catchy without those somewhat distracting guitar solos. Little did they know it at the time but these albums would change the world! 33 tracks in all. Warner.

Nirvana: Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar); Jason Everman (guitar); Chris Novoselic (bass); Chad Channing (drums). Additional personnel: Dale Crover (drums). Recorded at Reciprocal Recording, Seattle, Washington. Personnel: Dale Crover, Chad Channing, Chad Channing (drums). Audio Mixer: Jack Endino. Recording information: Pine Street Theatre, Portland, OR (02/09/1990); Reciprocal, Seattle, WA (02/09/1990). Photographers: Tracy Marander; Charles Peterson . This is one case where the legend really precedes the record itself. Cut for about 600 dollars in Jack Endino's studio over just a matter of days, this captures Nirvana at a formative stage, still indebted to the murk that became known as grunge, yet not quite finding their voice as songwriters. Which isn't to say that they were devoid of original material, since even at this stage Kurt Cobain illustrated signs of his considerable songcraft, particularly on the minor-key ballad "About a Girl" and the dense churn of "Blew." A few songs come close to that level, but that's more a triumph of sound than structure, as "Negative Creep" and "School" get by on attitude and churn, while the cover of "Love Buzz" winds up being one of the highlights because this gives a true menace to their sound, thanks to its menacing melody. The rest of it sinks into the sludge, as the group itself winds up succumbing to grinding sub-metallic riffing that has little power, due to lack of riffs and lack of a good drummer. Bleach is more than a historical curiosity since it does have its share of great songs, but it isn't a lost classic -- it's a debut from a band that shows potential but haven't yet achieved it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine With a sludgy, chainsaw guitar sound that owes as much to early Black Sabbath as to Kurt Cobain's heroes The Melvins, whose drummer puts in an appearance here, Nirvana emerges from Seattle's underground scene as standard-bearers of a style that embraces the anger and energy of punk alongside the thick, muddy sonic ...
