Big League Babe: The Christine Lavin Tribute Album Part 1 contains interpretations of 12 Christine Lavin songs by a diverse group of contemporary musicians. The project celebrates Christine Lavin's music and is a tribute her tireless efforts to support other musicians. What began as a plan to record 10-12 songs as a surprise for Christine grew to the 2 album/26 song collection!n 1984, Christine quit her day job at Bellvue Hospital to pursue a career in music full-time. Since then she has recorded nine solo original albums, produced six compilations showcasing songs by dozens of her favorite singer/songwriters, and is part of three Four Bitchin' Babes albums. She has published one solo songbook, two group compilations, has won two New York Music Awards, three ASCAP composer awards, a NAIRD Award for Folk Album of the Year and the Kate Wolf Memorial Award, given yearly by the World Folk Music Association. Her concert career has taken her all over the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Germany, and for two years during her travels she was the folk correspondent for Public Radio International's World Cafe. For the first three months of 1997, she hosted the weekly three-hour radio program, Sunday Breakfast on WFUV-FM in New York City. She has also written for The Washington Post. Unless, like the Holy Modal Rounders, you've spent a lot of time listening to Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music while ingesting recreational drugs, their music might sound a bit odd to you. Actually, given the ramshackle performances, it sounds a bit odd in any case, but as with any humorously intended work, appreciation of it depends on one's sympathy with the artists. For initiates, this seventh (and, so it seemed at the time of its release, final) album was one of the Rounders' better ones, with Peter Stampfel, Chris Weber, ...

$12.99 Pure enchantment resonates through every track of this 2001 release. Baaba Maal's fingers dance over the strings of his acoustic guitar, while bass, balafon, calabash, and timbales create a joyful noise, over which Maal's expressive vocals soar. Abandoning ...

$14.69 COHENSION is a 13 track drum and bass release by beat masters Flytronix and includes "Heavy Traffic," "Play Monk," and "Zig Zag."
Danny Demierre's Flytronix changes pace a bit on Cohesion. The label change should be the first hint -- this one is on Far Out and not Moving Shadow. Employing his trademark drum'n'bass m.o. but not restricting himself to it, Demierre offers traces of Latin funk ...
| | Sean Russell To This Point CDs (2004)
Big League Babe: The Christine Lavin Tribute Album PT. 1 CD music
$10.15 A B O U T S E A N R U S S E L LIf you detect a particularly unassuming quality to Dallas singer-songwriter Sean Russell's debut CD, To This Point, you may be picking up on the quiet truth at the heart of the project. For the past few years, the 31-year-old Russell has been quietly creating music that offers moving snapshots of a life that's been anything but ordinary. The disc, recorded by brothers Todd and Toby Pipes (veterans of work with Deep Blue Something, Drowning Pool, and Hi-Fi Drowning) at Dallas' Bass Propulsion Laboratories, was initially envisioned as nothing more than a simple encapsulation of Russell's tunes - maybe something for his family to enjoy in posterity.Instead, buoyed by the Pipes brothers' assistance, Russell's ear for timeless pop hooks mix with his comfortably confessional songwriting style, producing a collection of songs that are as melodic as they are moving. Russell is not afraid to admit his love for both ...

$17.35 Having previously combined Gene Watson's first and third albums (1975's Love in the Hot Afternoon and 1977's Paper Rosie) onto one CD, the Hux label paired the moderately popular honky tonk singer's second and fourth albums (1976's Because You Believe in Me and 1978's Beautiful Country) onto one disc for this release. Because You Believe in Me featured a Top 20 hit in the title track, and a considerably ...
