Personnel: Elliott Smith (vocals, acoustic guitar); Rebecca Gates (vocals); Neil Gust (guitar). Recorded at Leslie's and Tony's houses, Portland, Oregon in January and February 1995. Personnel: Neil Gust (electric guitar). Audio Mixers: Elliott Smith; Tony Lugh. Recording information: Leslie Uppinghowse's House (09/1994-02/1995); Tony Lash's House (09/1994-02/1995). Photographers: J.J. Gusa; Neil Gust. Elliott Smith's self-titled second album was his first for the Kill Rock Stars label and also his first major artistic statement. Its sound is fairly similar to that of Roman Candle -- it's mostly just Smith and his gently fingerpicked acoustic guitar, embellished a bit more often with drums, harmony vocals, and the odd additional instrument. The main difference here is that Smith's melodies and lyrics reveal their greater strength and substance with repeated listens. And make no mistake, the songs do require repeated listens -- not just because of Smith's often whispery, spiderweb-thin delivery, but also because of his deceptively angular melodies and chord progressions, which threaten to float away until the listener hears them enough to latch on and know where they're going. Smith is often compared to Paul Simon or the Beatles in their softer moments, but perhaps the best touchstone for this early sound is Nick Drake's even more minimalistic Pink Moon; while Smith's language is rawer and tougher than Drake's haunting poetics, his songs also deal with depression and loneliness, creating an almost uncomfortable intimacy with their bare-bones arrangements. The quiet prettiness of Smith's sound can make it easy to overlook the darker, edgier side of his songs -- many of Smith's embittered characters cope with their dysfunctional relationships or breakups through substance abuse, while some of the lyrics read more like angry, defiant punk rants when separated from the music. Smith would flesh out his sound with the albums to come, but Elliott Smith contains the blueprint for his later successes, and more importantly, it's a fully realized work itself. ~ Steve Huey Oregon-based Elliot Smith was a long shot underdog for commercial success. A decidedly grim-natured whisperer, Smith is the antithesis of Oregon's celebrated grunge scene. He eschews fuzz-laden power chords and rhythmic sludge for stark acoustics and hushed intensity. The quiet force of this release is deceptively low key. Underneath the stark and fragile beauty, Smith seethes with steely determination. The tightly wound claustrophobia is relieved by his unerring melodic sense. The album's best songs ("Needle in the Hay," "St. Ides Heaven," and "Killing the Southern Belle") are littered with addicts, drunks, bitterness, and isolation; but Smith's tunefulness lifts the album toward a disturbing beauty. Elliott Smith Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Music For The Long Ride Home Eliott Smith's semi-autobiographic, self titled 2nd full length, is sung and played with lucid synergy. The fragility and darkness that he patiently exudes, is pure musical satisfaction. Hurt can turn into healing, lyricaly and musically. This album demands your attention. If you love the intimacy of intricate acoustic gutiar and the strength of passionate lyrical metaphor, you will love this whisper of an album. Photographers: Debbie Pastor; Joanna Bolme. Elliott Smith's third album sees his one-man show getting a little more ambitious. While he still plays all the instruments himself, he plays more of them. Several of the songs mimic the melody mastery of pop bands from 1960s. The most alluring numbers, however, are still his quietly melancholy acoustic ones. While the full-band songs are catchy and smart, Smith's recording equipment isn't quite up to the standards set by the Beatles and the Beach Boys. The humbler arrangements are better suited to the sparse equipment. "Between the Bars," for example, plays Smith's strengths perfectly. He sings, in his endearingly limited whisper, of late-night drinking and introspection, and his subdued strumming creates a minor-key mood befitting the mysteries of self. "Angeles" is equally ethereal -- Smith's acoustic fingerpicking spins out notes which briskly move around a single atmospheric keyboard chord, like aural minnows swimming toward a solitary light at the surface of the water. The lyrics are a darkly biting rejection of the hypercapitalist dream machinery of Los Angeles (it would make a great theme song for Smith's label, Kill Rock Stars). Ironically, "Angeles" was included on the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, which won Smith the acclaim of Hollywood's biggest, brightest, and best connected voting body, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. Smith's stock in L.A. soared after he took his bow at the Oscars with Celine Dion and Trisha Yearwood. It might have been more interesting had he sung "Angeles." ~ Darryl Cater This singer/songwriter can say more with a whisper than most folks can with a scream. The gently insinuating despair of Smith's work communicates volumes about the heartbreak and alienation that is the ba

$11.65 elliott smith played in a few great rock bands before becoming a well known artist in his own right- in the mid nineties. the most notable of those bands was portland, oregons' heatmiser.in 1993, after releasing a scortching hot heatmiser 7" single on cavity search, elliotts' then girlfriend delivered a gorgeously sparse and hushed acoustic record of elliotts' 4-track "kitchen table" recordings to cavity search records - and they talked him into releasing it as "roman candle" in 1994.after several critically acclaimed cds and a spotlight in gus van sants' award winning "good will hunting" movie/soundtrack - elliott smith has become a household name headed for legendary status even before his 30th birthday!the future looks bright and the fans are coming from all points on the globe!

Judging only by his earlier, bare-bones indie-label albums, it seemed highly unlikely that Elliott Smith would turn into the ambitious arranger and studio craftsman of his lushly textured Dreamworks debut, XO. A big part of that shift, of course, was the fact that Smith had major-label finances and equipment to work with for the first time; this allowed him to fuse his melancholy, slightly punky folk with the rich sonics of pop artists like the Beatles and Beach Boys. Smith continues in that direction for the follow-up, Figure 8, an even more sonically detailed effort laden with orchestrations and ...

Almost exactly a year after his untimely death -- missing the anniversary by just two days -- Elliott Smith's final recordings were released as the From a Basement on the Hill album. Smith had been working on the album for a long time. His last album, Figure 8, had appeared in 2000, and when it came time to record its follow-up, he parted ways with both his major label, Dreamworks, and his longtime producer/engineer, Rob Schnapf, working through a number of different producers, including L.A. superproducer Jon Brion, before recording a number of sessions with David McConnell, which ...

On their 15th go at '70s song archaeology, Rhino dishes up the decade's kaleidoscopic music menu in all its intriguing and over-the-top glory. Tapping the 1975-1976 period, the 12 cuts take in indelible novelties (C.W. McCall's 18-wheeler hit "Convoy"), '50s nostalgia (Pete Wingfield's "18 With a Bullett"), Defranco Family-issue kitsch (David Geddes' "Run Joey Run"), and glam pop (Bay City Rollers' "Saturday Night"). There's also plenty of soul and funk variants, like Jigsaw's disco symphonic "Sky High," Joe Frank Hamilton's blue-eyed "Fallin' in Love," and Hot Chocolate's dancefloor-filling "Sexy Thing." The maturation of the singer/songwriter is also essayed (Janis Ian's still-solid "Seventeen"), while a country tearjerker finds its crossover legs (Jessi Colter's "I'm Not Lisa"). A few duds, a few gems, and a fair share of songs you will not need to hear a third time around. ~ Stephen Cook This might have been one trip into the past that Rhino Records should have thought about very hard before making. Oh, there are two really good moments here, Cliff Richard's sole thrust at U.S. success, "Devil Woman," and the Sanford/Townsend Band's upbeat, catchy "Smoke From a Distant Fire," but otherwise a lot of this CD is given over to records that -- unless you had a lot of good times listening to the radio while driving during the late Ford or early Carter administrations -- it's difficult to imagine anyone wanting to own this terribly much: Rick Dees' brain-damaged dance hit "Disco Duck," which did everyone the service of hammering a nail in the coffin of the disco boom in the course of becoming one of the biggest selling singles of 1976; "Get Closer," which was among the weakest of Seals & Crofts' hits, despite the presence of Carolyn Willis of Honey Cone and Bob B. Soxx & the Blue Jeans fame; the rural melodrama (seemingly by way of Erskine Caldwell) "Judy Mae" by Boomer Castleman (aka Owen Clarke of the Lewis & Clarke Expedition); Dean Friedman's adenoidal tale of Garden State romance, "Ariel" (which, if not for its break, would be ...
| | Clash Combat Rock CD (1982) Remastered
Elliott Smith
$6.75 Also available in a 3-pack with THE CLASH and LONDON CALLING. The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (vocals, bass); Topper Headon (drums). Additional personnel: Gary Barnacle (saxophone); Tymon Dogg (piano); Poly Mandrell (keyboards); Allen Ginsberg, Joe Ely, Ellen Foley, Futura 2000 (background vocals). Digitally remastered by Ray Staff & Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios, London, England). On the surface of things, Combat Rock appears to be a retreat from the sprawling stylistic explorations of London Calling and Sandinista! The pounding arena rock of "Should I Stay or Should I Go" makes the Clash sound like an arena rock band, and much of the album boasts a muscular, heavy sound courtesy of producer Glyn Johns. But things aren't quite that simple. Combat Rock contains heavy flirtations with rap, funk, and reggae, and it even has a cameo by poet Allen Ginsberg -- if this album is, as it has often been claimed, the Clash's sellout effort, it's a very strange way to sell out. Even with the infectious, dance-inflected new wave pop of "Rock the Casbah" leading the way, there aren't many overt attempts at crossover success, mainly because the group is tearing in two separate directions. Mick Jones wants the Clash to inherit the Who's righteous arena rock stance, and Joe Strummer wants to forge ahead into black music. The result is an album that is nearly as inconsistent as Sandinista!, even though its finest moments -- "Should I Stay or Should I Go," "Rock the Casbah," "Straight to Hell" -- illustrate why the Clash were able to reach a larger audience than ever before with the record. [In 2000 Columbia/Legacy reissued and remastered Combat Rock.] ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine It's not easy being the World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band (a tag the Clash inherited from the Rolling Stones, who had traded ...
