A female-led indie-punk trio from Olympia -- who perhaps not coincidentally have the exact same name a certain Los Angeles girl group from the early '80s used until they decided to lengthen it to the Bangles -- the Bangs are less noisy than Bratmobile and more rocking than Beat Happening, to compare them to their scene compadres (or less sweet than Cub and less subversively poppy than the Muffs, to expand the comparisons). The closest comparison is probably Sleater-Kinney, but the Bangs have a more visceral, aggressive sound that at times -- especially on the twin anthems "Burnout," and "Death by Guitar" -- recalls the metal-tinged punky pop of late-'80s Redd Kross and Pandoras records. The album's main flaw is Scott Swayze's ultra-muddy production, which, on songs like the bizarrely-titled "Lend Me Crumpets" moves well beyond lo-fi D.I.Y. into willful amateurishness. The songs, which have the urgency and bite-me attitude of the Olympia scene, deserve better than that. ~ Stewart Mason

A more experimental follow-up from these punk rock furies. While there's still lots of vitriol, the songs are more varied and even catchy. "Rebel Girl" is a manifesto just waiting to be discovered, and the rest of the album sees ...

Tiger Beat
$9.29 Japan: David Sylvian (vocals, guitar, keyboards, programming, tapes); Richard Barbieri (keyboards, programming, tapes); Mick Karn (fretless bass, African flute, dida); Steve Jansen (drums, percussion, programming). Additional personnel: Yuka Fujii (vocals); Simon House (violin). Partially growing out of their success in the country they were named after, as well as growing friendship and affiliation with such bands as Yellow Magic Orchestra, Japan, on Tin Drum, made its most unique, challenging, and striking album. It was also the final full studio effort from the group, and what a way to bow out -- there was practically no resemblance to the trash glam flailers on Adolescent Sex anymore. Rather than repeat the sheer restraint on Gentlemen Take Polaroids, Tin Drum is an album of energy, Sylvian's singing still the decadently joyful thing it is, but the arrangements and performances tight, full, and active. The fusion of exquisite funk courtesy of Karn and ...
