Alleluia - An American Hymnal / Bruffy, Kansas City Chorale CD

Nimbus Records of Wales recorded us just shortly before Halloween of 1997 in Bales organ recital hall on the campus of Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. Nimbus uses only the natural acoustics of venues in recordings, no tweeking and only the performance itself. A single microphone in the middle of the hall; 24 singers in sock-feet; stand-lights and after nearly 14 hours of almost continuous recording as the snow began to fall, we sang Randall Thompson's 'Alleluia' at the slowest and most delicately intimate tempos I've ever performed. TRUE... the levels are low, but instead of turning the volume UP, simply find a truly quiet space in which to listen and REALLY listen. These are the REAL dynamics from one of America's premiere choirs! I was Blessed to have been part of the experience... just wanted to clarify the circumstances of its creation...  A Range of American Hymnody
This choral collection pays tribute to several traditional forms of Christian hymnody in America. Recordings were made in large concert halls and cathedral-like settings, hence the resonance and echoes of a concert performance rather than a studio recording session. (At times I must turn my equipment to a very high volume in order to hear the music adequately.) I heard most of these numbers live in a brilliant performance at the Episcopal Cathedral, Kansas City, MO, in July 2001, and this CD recaptures the experience beautifully. "Sing Me to Heaven" is well worth the price of the entire collection.
