Yo-Yo Ma's holiday album SONGS OF JOY AND PEACE admirably aims to be all-inclusive by featuring songs from the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic traditions, as well as feel-good popular favorites like "Here Comes the Sun" and "My Favorite Things." Guests include Diana Krall, James Taylor, Joshua Redman, Chris Botti, and Dave Brubeck, among others. The 1952 NBC series Victory at Sea was one of the earliest network documentary series to capture the public's imagination in a serious way, and one of the more enduring offshoots was the music by Richard Rodgers, which was recorded by RCA-Victor in what ultimately became a series of four LPs. Rodgers was chosen by series producer Henry Salamon based on his being the "leading American composer of his day," a somewhat exalted (though understandable) judgement for a man who was most closely associated with the Broadway stage and Hollywood. The albums were popular, probably due in part to the fact that the music was accessible and unchallenging, and that it insinuated itself for months into the household of seemingly every American family that had someone fighting in World War II -- and that a lot of veterans owned stereo systems in the late '50s, and these recordings took full advantage of stereo's two-channel sound separation. As to the music itself, one finds on listening to it 40+ years later that a little goes a long way. Rodgers devised a straightforward melodic score whose most inspired moments (such as the main title theme) seem to have been lifted from the early work of Ralph Vaughan Williams. An astonishing amount of what is on this CD (which runs 67 minutes) is banal, predictable musical accompaniment, broken up with a few surprises, such as "Dangers Down Deep," which opens with an understated reprise of the main title theme, and "Theme of the Fast Carriers," which starts out leisurely and ends up fairly exciting. The Dolby Surround remastering preserves the luster of the original LPs, and the stereo separation -- a function of Robert Russell Bennett's arrangements and orchestrations -- recalls the days when that kind of effect was, in and of itself, a conversation piece. (And it is ironic that a series of LPs spawned by television -- which wouldn't offer stereo audio for another 30+ years -- helped push home stereo in a very serious way in the late '50s.) ~

Produced between 1940-1946, soundies were short films that played on coin-operated machines in nightclubs, restaurants, and bars as visual accompaniments to a wide variety of music ranging from country-and-western to jazz. This volume presents a collection of 18 soundies from the greatest leaders of big band: Jimmy Dorsey, Gene Krupa, Victor Young, Al Donohue, Will Bradley, Charlie Spivak, Johnny Long, and Johnny Messner.
These short films, known as Soundies, include performances by Stan Kenton, Les Brown featuring Doris Day, Tony Pastor, Claude Thornhill featuring Buddy Stewart and Martha Wayne, Sonny Dunham, Larry Clinton, Bob Chester, Glen Gray & His Orchestra, Alvino Rey, and Buddy Rogers.

To categorize CLASSIC YO-YO as simply a greatest-hits collection would be inaccurate. This compilation offers a glimpse of the breadth of a great artist's ability. It effectively conveys the essence of Yo-Yo Ma, not simply the virtuosity of a supremely gifted cellist--arguably the finest of his time--but the intelligence, insight, and assiduousness of a musician who continually seeks new challenges, explores diverse musical territories, and refuses to be pigeonholed.
The album begins, appropriately, with his remarkable account of the Prelude from J. S. Bach's Cello Suite No. 1, continuing through to an eclectic assortment that includes Piazzolla tangos, a Gershwin Prelude, and an excerpt from Tan Dun's score for the film CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, as well as pieces by Fauré, Brahms, and Dvorák. The disc also features tracks from the "Appalachian" collaborations with Edgar Meyer and Mark O'Connor, and several bonuses in the form of previously unreleased material: Piazzolla's Tango Sensation: FEAR and new recordings of John Williams' "American Collection" Theme and the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" featuring Alison Krauss. CLASSIC YO-YO is an excellent introduction for the uninitiated, but also holds value for anyone already familiar with the work of this extraordinary artist.
