(1 Customer Review)
Principally recorded at Wavelab Studios, Tucson, Arizona in July, August & December, 1997.
When not serving as a rhythm section for such acts as Giant Sand, Barbara Manning, Richard Buckner and The Friends of Dean Martinez, multi-instrumentalists Joey Burns and John Convertino comprise Calexico, also featuring Convertino's wife Tasha Bundy on backing vocals. Based in Tuscon Arizona, Calexico makes the most of its proximity to the Mexican border--the music is dominated by Spanish rhythms, sounds, and textures.
THE BLACK LIGHT is mostly instrumental, with a few songs sung by Burns in a voice strangely reminiscent of The Eagles' Glenn Frey. The feel is always relaxed but intriguing, with a wide range of instrumentation (Burns & Convertino play bass, guitar, cello, mandolin, accordian, steel guitar, vibes, drums, marimba, and percussion, with guest musicians handling organ, piano, violin, and claves) very effectively conveying a dark, almost cinematic vision of desert-town nightlife. A horn section is brilliantly utilized on tracks like "Chach," "Minas De Cobre," and "Over Your Shoulder." The vocal songs deal with violence, dead ends both figurative and literal, booze and crime. "Margaritaville" it ain't, but THE BLACK LIGHT still makes for excellent summer listening either on the porch, fire escape, or hacienda.
Calexico's second album from 1998 expands upon the sun-baked, cinematic sound like the first with the addition of Latin jazz rhythms, mariachi trumpets and pedal steel. Quarterstick.

Black Light album
$12.25 While Calexico's 1997 debut album, SPOKE, contains strong hints of what was to come for the group, it clearly stands as an early point in their evolution. The hazy spaghetti-Western Mexicana that would later become so prevalent pops up at a few points here, but doesn't dominate the album. Multi-instrumentalists John Convertino and Joey Burns had only recently splintered off from Giant Sand, and the Captain Beefheart-gone-indie-rock flavor of their former band can still be heard in spots. At the same time, there's a strong lo-fi ...

Black Light CD music
$12.25 Giant Sand members John Convertino and Joey Burns here continue their eclectic, soundtrack-like side project exploring music and culture. Approaching conventional song structure as a painter would a blank canvas, there are no rules and no limitations in their artful approach to their music.
"El Picador" has an atmospheric quality that practically puts the taste of Mexican soil in your mouth, while in "Ballad of Cable Hogue," the English/French vocals play out like a dialogue to a Western classic. The instrumental "Muleta" paints more sonic pictures of Mexico with lush layers of acoustic guitars, while the dramatic and percussive "Mid-Town" creates a soundtrack of frenzied movement. The sleepy, jazz-washed accompaniment ...

$15.05 BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
That Ry Cooder, you've got to keep an eye on him every minute, or he jumps into another cross-cultural collaboration. In the wake of his landmark recordings TALKING TIMBUKTU with Ali Farka Toure and A MEETING BY THE RIVER with V.M. Bhatt comes BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, essentially a supergroup of traditional Cuban musicians with the addition of international agitator Cooder. Somehow, Cooder always finds just the right space to slide his sinuous slide guitar into, so that it works in almost any context. Here, amidst the multi-layered percussion, piano and Cuban guitar rhythms, Cooder's slide simultaneously finds a home and eggs the ensemble on. The natural beauty of the Cuban tonal and rhythmic palette is the real star of BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, evoking both a sense of mystery and a feeling of intense emotional satisfaction.

Black Light songs
$8.85 On Even My Sure Things Fall Through, Tucson's Calexico compiles eight European B-sides, remixes, covers, and other unreleased tracks, as well as three CD-ROM videos. Such albums often come off as hastily compiled and shoddily sequenced, but Calexico's attempt at a rarities release is surprisingly coherent. From the then-unreleased opener, "Sonic Wind (Instrumental Mix)," to the elegantly lush remake of American Music Club's "Chanel No. 5," the 45-plus minute EP manages to showcase wonderfully the band's deserted desert songs, Tex-Mex music, and arid roots rock. And while diehards may more fully appreciate having these hard to find titles all on one domestically released album, Even My Sure Things Fall Through should prove to be a mini treasure trove for new Calexico fans as well. ~ Jimmy Draper

Black Light album
$12.85 Calexico streamlined its eclectic sound a bit on this 2003 release, adding a pop sensibility to the band's already-exciting mixture of Latin-tinged Southwestern twang and jazzy, atmospheric sophistication. Most notably, FEAST OF WIRE features more of multi-instrumentalist Joey Burns's voice (Burns co-founded the band along with drummer ...

| | Le Tigre From The Desk Of...Mr. Lady CD (2001) Enhanced CD
Black Light songs
$8.99 Kathleen Hanna is an individualist refraining from anything catchy. However, she and her outfit, Le Tigre, draw outside the lines on their seven-song EP From the Desk of Mr. Lady. They don't shy away from electronic samples, making for a delightfully quirky indie rock appeal. Of course the riot grrl attitude is still apparent, but it's not so in-your-face. Songs such as "Get Off the Internet" and "Bang Bang" are brilliantly amusing, poking fun at corporate society and its obsession with right-wing norms, especially the power of technology. New wave synth beats are lackluster, but that's also part of the attraction. They are a little generic, reminiscent of a Casio. "Gone B4 Yr Home" is frisky; Erasure-esque club/dance aesthetics make this one of the more jaunty tracks on the album. Le Tigre frolics with ambient pop, ...

ELO was big enough by 1974 that some people actually suggested that ELDORADO featured Satanic backward-masking. Of course, the idea was ludicrous; but the band playfully responded by adding a backward message to "Fire on High," the opening instrumental on 1975's FACE THE ...
