| | June Of 44 Anahata CD June Of 44 Discography of CDs
An indie-rock supergroup if there ever was one, June of 44 consists of members of Rodan, Lungfish, Codeine, and Hoover among others. Genre-defying prog-rock at its most intrepid and surprising, the band's third record, ANAHATA delivers a wide variety of styles. There's sometimes a total absence of standard rock & roll song structures or time signatures and, consequently, much of this is compelling stuff.
On "Boom," twangy reverb guitar, mantra-like singing, a forlorn trumpet, and a galloping tribal beat take the fore, whereas "Southeast of Boston," a slow, dreamy tune, resonates with vibraphone and soft harmonies. The vocals evoke unabashedly off-key punk/post- punk singers like Mick Jones and James White, and the reigning musical approach is fairly loose jams built around syncopated rhythms. In fact, the single thread truly connecting the songs on the album (sans the free-for-all space-out at the last track's end) is the tight, steady drumming. From reggae to jazz-funk to slightly skewed rock, each cut is firmly grounded in groove.
Recorded at Electrical Audio, Chicago, Illinois in January 1999.
June Of 44: Sean Meadows (vocals, guitar, bass); Jeff Mueller (vocals, guitar); Fred Erskine (vocals, trumpet, keyboards, bass); Doug Scharin (keyboards, vibraphone, drums, percussion, samples).
Additional personnel: Chiyoko Yoshida (vocals); Julie Liu (viola).

Alternative Press (9/99, pp.101-2) - 3 out of 5 - "...June of 44 consistently exhibit a vibrancy that is rarely found in this [post-rock] genre....a feast for those with a taste for variety to grow fat on." Magnet (8-9/99, p.79) - "...it stinks like roses....upgraded are the experimental structuring and flowery ideas....A change in course for sure, but a damn smooth one at that." The Wire (8/99, p.59) - "...something of a revelation....ANAHATA is the sound of a group reaching maturity without comprimising their basic energy." CMJ (5/31/99, p.26) - "June of 44 peddles intensity, melancholy and introspection on ANAHATA by using sustained notes, precise timing and lengthy tracks....[they are] concerned with acheiving atmospheric density by the most sublime means possible..." $13.05 Featuring current and former members of slowcore icons Codeine and post-rock bands like Rodan, Rex, and the Sonora Pine, June of 44 is proof positive that a musically incestuous scene can sometimes be a good thing. With origins in the same Louisville scene that gave birth to obvious influences Squirrel Bait and Slint, this quartet sticks more toward the rock side of the instrumental music spectrum, ...

Anahata album
$12.95 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Electronics permeate all twelve tracks here, adding textural shadings that seemed like foreign turf for the band when it first came together as an all-star crew of Chicago indie multi-instrumentalists in the early '90s. Cluster, Mouse On Mars and drum 'n' bass now hold equal footing on Tortoise's soundstage, beautifying the peripheral space while the quintet (Dave Pajo plays on the album, but is no longer a full-time member) improvises over, riffs on, and generally recontextualizes various jazzy, "out" musical styles of the last thirty years.
Generally, TNT's compositions flow out of the Ennio Morricone vibe that has always been present in their work. Lush, southwestern-desert guitar lines build the axis. The inevitable vibes provide both rhythmic undertow and curt, melodic counterpoint. Electronic studio trickery ...
| | Seal Human Being CD (1998)
Anahata CD music
$10.45 From the spacious, catchy title track that kicks things off, HUMAN BEING continues Seal's unique brand of pop craftsmanship. Filled with the pure, soulful vocals, dramatic compositions and airy arrangements that resonate with Seal's worldwide audience, the album is another fine addition to his canon. Introducing programming into the mix, he expands on the already miles-deep sonic palette which marks all of his work, thanks in part to producer Trevor Horn, who miraculously makes even the busiest musical passage seem as expansive as the heavens.
The strong but elegant march of "State Of Grace" drives home Seal's seriousness of purpose, both lyrically and musically. "The Latest Craze" boasts sweet harmonic accompaniment and subtle programming adornment. Things move up close for the tender "Just Like You Said," which features an unusually up-front vocal and acoustic guitar track in a slow, steady build ...

$14.29 Swedish producer Andreas Saag is a lot closer to West London in the spiritual sense than the physical sense, which is apparent on his full-length debut as Stateless for Ubiquity. $14.79 I started taking guitar lessons at age eleven, however, I quit after about a year cause I just wasn't interested in what they were teaching, total crap. I practiced on and off for a decade, and getting nowhere, so I finnally started to collect "how to books" and eventually wrote my own book about Scales, Chords and Keys and how they all work together. Until the book was finished, I had no idea what I was doing or how to make music. This ...
