April Aloisio is a soft-toned vocalist whose sensuous and cool voice is perfect for bossa-nova. Half of the tunes on her impressive disc are in that genre and she proves that she can also sing straightahead jaz and scat quite effectively too. Aloisio is featured in a wide variety of settings from the 1985-94 period yet the program has a strong unity about it. Among the highlights are a bossa version of "The Man I Love" (on which the singer is backed by Howard Levy on harmonica and acoustic guitarist David Onderdonk), "One Note Samba," a cooking rendition of Bud Powell's "Duid Deed" (which has been given lyrics by producer Joanie Pallatto who adds her appealing voice to four numbers), "Nice's Dream" and "Meditation" but each performance has its moments of interest. The supporting cast includes on some tunes bassist Eldee Young, drummer Redd Holt, tenorman Von Freeman and guitarist Paulinho Garcia. Whether it be "Centerpiece," "It Ain't Necessarily So" or the five Jobim pieces, this is a delightful set by April Aloisio, a versatile vocalist who deserves to be much better known. ~ Scott Yanow April sends her musical message around the world with her interpretations of classic Brazilian songs, jazz chestnuts and originals, all with a fresh, new sound that is uniquely April Aloisio.
