Pianist Chuck Marohnic, tubaist Sam Pilafian, and trumpeter Greg Hopkins lead a nonet reminiscent of Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool recordings from the late 1940s and early 1950s. Finely tuned and arranged with a careful ear, this recording collects several period pieces and three originals by Hopkins and one by Marohnic. True to the style of early Miles, the band carefully re-creates a mood without devolving to repertory. While a few of the pieces use the classic, original arrangements (from Gil Evans and Johnny Carisi), the others mostly reflect the respectful and tasteful pen of Hopkins, who admirably re-creates a feel, without shackling himself to the past. Hopkins proves himself a fine soloist, as do the other members of the nonet, including tuba virtuoso Sam Pilafian. ~ Steven A. Loewy
Recorded at Tempest Studios, Tempe, Arizona. Includes liner notes by Wallace Raye.
Jazz Nonet includes: Byron Ruth (alto & tenor saxophones); Steven Von Wald (baritone saxophone); Greg Hopkins (trumpet); Gary Carney (trombone); Samuel Pilatian (tuba); Chuck Marohnic (piano); Ed Friedland (bass); Dom Moio (drums).

Purchase Jazz! CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
Jazz! album
$13.35 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" and the Bacharach/David gem "Walk On By" that benefit from her supremely smoky vocals and graceful delivery.

| | Herbie Hancock River: The Joni Letters CD (2007)
Jazz! CD music
$10.99 Any doubts about the incongruity of jazz icon Herbie Hancock covering singer-songwriter extraordinare Joni Mitchell will be obliterated on the first journey through RIVER: THE JONI LETTERS. For starters, the premise is not especially incongruous. Hancock has had a long, adventurous career in which he's traversed genres and masterfully blended styles, while Mitchell has always been deeply influenced by jazz as both a composer and a singer. RIVER features many of Mitchell's finest songs, stunning in their own right and reinterpreted beautifully by Hancock, plus a stellar assortment of musicians and guest vocalists.
Mitchell's pop and folk tendencies have been assimilated into the arrangements; the album plays like a vocal jazz outing. Hancock is joined by fellow Miles Davis alums Wayne Shorter and Dave Holland, among others, and the guest vocalists include Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Corinne Bailey Rae, Leonard Cohen, and--on one track--Mitchell herself. Sophisticated, soulful, and gorgeous, RIVER is a must for fans of Mitchell, classic jazz, adult contemporary artists like Norah Jones--and, well, just about everyone.
Personnel: Wayne Shorter (soprano); Dave Holland (bass guitar); Vinnie Colaiuta (drums).
Additional personnel: Corinne Bailey Rae, Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Leonard Cohen, Luciana Souza.
| | Return To Forever Returns CDs (2009)
Jazz! music CDs
$15.39 The 2008 reunion of Return to Forever's classic mid-1970s line-up marked an extraordinary event for fans of progressive jazz fusion. The band built their reputation on the mind-boggling chemistry of pianist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke, drummer Lenny White, and guitarist Al Dimeola. That chemistry proves as explosive as ever 20 years after the group first dazzled audiences with their complex, rock-influenced hybrids. The two-disc set RETURNS features live recordings from Return to Forever's reunion tour, boasting such classics as "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy" and "The Romantic Warrior." There is, as one might guess, no shortage of stretching out from each of these four jazz luminaries.
Return to Forever: Al di Meola (guitars, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Chick Corea (piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Stanley Clarke (acoustic bass, upright bass, electric bass, bass guitar); Lenny White (drums, percussion).
Audio Mixers: Buck Snow; Bernie Kirsh.

| | Herb Alpert Whipped Cream & Other Delights CD (1965) Bonus Tracks
Jazz! album
$9.89 How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.
WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most successful album, helped--no doubt--by its highly provocative cover art. The tunes are mostly unknown originals or, in the case of Lieber & Stoller's "Love Potion #9," so transformed by the Tijuana "treatment" as to be almost unrecognizable. Special mention must go to guitarist John Pisano and marimba man Julius Wechter, both of whom round out the sharp corners of a potentially raucous sound.
Building upon South of the Border's (1964) Top Ten success, Herb Alpert dismissed the contingency of Los Angeles-based studio instrumental all-stars, which he had christened the Tijuana Brass. Because there was enough demand for live dates, just like a musical Gepetto, Alpert formed a real Tijuana Brass. The bandleader/trumpeter was joined by Tonni Kalash (trumpet), Robert Edmondson (trombone), Pat Senatore (bass), John Pisano (guitars), Lou Pagani (piano), and Nick Ceroli (drums). Ostensibly, the personnel wasn't a primary consideration as Alpert and company had already begun making serious inroads on the pop music scene. Not bad, considering the market was being heavily infiltrated, if not practically dominated by the British Invasion. With Whipped Cream & Other Delights (1965), they would take that momentum to new heights -- including three Grammy Awards alone
| | Miles Davis Tribute To Jack Johnson CD (1970) Remastered
Jazz! CD music
$7.59 A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, but the album stands on its own as one of the most brilliant, compelling fusion recordings ever made. This is due in large part to the increasing influence of rock and funk on Miles's aesthetic, to the superb musicians (including Davis himself-- who turns in some stunningly vigorous solos), and in part to the production skills of Teo Macero, who collaged the album together from numerous jam sessions into two lengthy, majestic tracks.
The infectious boogaloo groove of "Right Off" has John McLaughlin's crunching, wah-wah-driven power chords dancing fervently around the relentless backbeat of Fender bassist Michael Henderson and drummer Billy Cobham. Gone are the trappings of bebop harmonies and modern jazz rhythms, save for Davis's dramatic solo, with its long, linear melodies and nasty blues inflections. The haunting, surreal "Yesternow" is an abstract update of the classic Miles/Gil Evans mood piece. The groove accrues momentum in a dreamy, backwards manner, keying off Henderson's hypnotic modal patterns and McLaughlin's speech-like figures, culminating in an atonal distortion solo by free jazz pioneer Sonny Sharrock. In all, JACK JOHNSON packs a punch like nothing else in the trumpeter's canon, and continues to grow in stature and influence decades after its release.
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Brock Peters (spoken vocals); John McLaughlin , Sonny Sharrock (electric guitar); Steve Grossman (soprano saxophone); Herbie Hancock (organ); Michael Henderson (bass guitar); Billy Cobham (drums).
Liner Note Authors: Dave Miles; Bill Milkowski.
| | Peter Tosh Arise Black Man CD (2000) Remastered
Jazz! music CDs
$10.15 Before officially breaking away from the Wailers and beginning his solo career, Peter Tosh recorded a number of singles under his own name with the legendary producer Bunny Lee. Those recordings play a central part in this generous 25-track compilation, which also includes material from Wailers sessions produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry and Leslie Kong, and some of Tosh's solo work with Joe Gibbs. Most of the best tracks here will be familiar to Tosh and Wailers fans -- "Maga Dog," "Brand New Second Hand," and "Them A Fe Get a Beating" have all appeared on numerous collections. But there are some very worthwhile obscurities on this program as well, including a gorgeous rock steady paean to Haile Selassie entitled "Rightful Ruler" (on which Tosh shares the mic with U Roy), Tosh's dour "Downpressor," and a charming cover version of Jimmy Witherspoon's R&B hit "Ain't Nobody's Business." Curiosities include the four alternate versions of "Maga Dog" (some of them recorded by other artists) and a smattering of instrumentals featuring Tosh on organ -- sometimes competently ("Ambitious Beggar," "Memphis") and sometimes not ("The Crimson Pirate," "Pepper Seed"). Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
25 track collection from reggae legend contains many songs appearing on CD for the first time; guest artists include The Wailers, Joe Gibbs, U Roy & more - tracks include "Skanky Dog," "Brand New Second Hand" & "Moon Dust"
Includes liner notes by Laurence Cane-Honeysett.
Personnel: Peter Tosh, The Wailers, Joe Gibbs, U Roy, The Now Generation, Bunny Flip, The Soul Mates, Winston Wright, Larry McDonald, The Love Generation (various instruments).

Jazz! songs
$10.69 This two-fer from Collectables features a pair of out-of-print Percy Faith LPs, Subways Are for Sleeping and Do I Hear a Waltz, originally issued in 1961 and 1965, respectively. Highlights of the 24 tracks include "Who Knows What Might Have Been?," "I Said It and I'm Glad," "Someone Like You," and "A Perfectly Lovely Couple." This is an enjoyable and recommended reissue from the massive Percy Faith catalog originally released on Columbia Records. ~ Al Campbell

| | William Parker Sound Unity CD (2005)
Jazz! CD music
$13.69 SOUND UNITY (2005) is one of William Parker's finest recordings in a discography full of them. Flanked by exceptional musicians, including drummer Hamid Drake, trumpeter Lewis Barnes, and saxophonist Rob Brown, Parker delivers an album that demonstrates a great intensity of feeling and depth of lyricism. The lack of a piano creates an intriguing sonic dynamic, and the group interaction in and around that silence is uncanny. The tunes, all Parker originals, blend folk, Middle Eastern flavors, and classic free jazz gestures (the music is influenced by the free jazz of the late 1960s, but not slavishly so). In short, SOUND UNITY is a superb album, and comes highly recommended not only to Parker enthusiasts, but to jazz fans in general.

| | Ken Berman In Mind CD (2006)
Jazz! songs
$17.09 Expat Jazz Sensation Returns from Paris with New Album! Reviewing Ken Berman's CD In Mind for The L.A. Jazz Scene, jazz critic Scott Yanow writes: "When listening to Ken Berman's trio CD In Mind, it is easy to think of Keith Jarrett and Bill Evans, for Berman's chord voicings and his close interplay with his sidemen recall the work of his two predecessors. The difference is that Berman wrote all ten selections, he never copies Evans or Jarrett, and at times he sounds more advanced than either of them. The music overall is both swinging and thoughtful, spontaneous and purposeful." In Mind, Ken Berman’s latest release (2006), features ten inspired original tracks showcasing his genius as a composer and pianist, leading a combo including the great John Lockwood on bass and legendary drummers Yoron Israel and Bob Gullotti. The French newspaper Le Monde praised Ken Berman, a sensation in Paris, as "precise and inventive," and the "talk of the town in the clubs of the capital of jazz." In Mind was rated one of the top 15 jazz releases of 2006 on the Jazz with Bob Parlocha website, and it has been added to the playlists on KCSM in San Francisco, WFMT in Chicago, WGBH in Boston, WEMU in Michigan as well as on college radio nationwide. Ken Berman was the subject of recent features on KCSM in San Francisco, and on KZSU at Stanford University. Pianist and composer Ken Berman has appeared on the famed stages of Carnegie Hall in New York, Detroit’s Fox Theater, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and The Sunside in Paris; he’s equally at home in the bohemian grooves of the Knitting Factory and Smoke. Le Monde hailed Ken Berman as a “fluid and erudite” composer and performer whose “complex improvisations are imbued with delicate sensuality and brilliance.” Ken Berman has performed and recorded with Bob Moses, John Lockwood, Yoron Israel, Kai Eckhardt, Akira Tana, Jaleel Shaw, Bob Gullotti, Take Toriyama, Chuck Metcalf, Remi Vignolo, Sarah Manning and others: he’s also been the recent recipient of several artist grants and awards for his ongoing work in jazz education. Ken is currently on the music faculty of the University of California at Berkeley.
