Personnel: Matt Eakle (flute); Davis Ramey (guitar); Harvie Swartz (bass). Includes liner notes by David Grisman & Matt Eakle. Personnel: Matt Eakle (flute, bass flute). Audio Mixers: David Grisman; Larry Cummings. Liner Note Authors: David Grisman; Matt Eakle. Photographer: D. Brent Hauseman. After nine years with the eclectic David Grisman Quintet, flutist Matt Eakle was given the opportunity to step out with his first solo album, and he makes the most of it with Flute Jazz. Employing a drummerless trio format, Eakle mixes his own original compositions with standards and tasteful jazz covers to produce an excellent showcase for his fine flutin'. His classically influenced tone is warm and airy, his original melodies are fresh yet familiar, and his improvisations are creative, incorporating inventive melodic twists and trilling, slurring, flutter-tongued effects. Eakle's musical partners are superb as well. Acoustic guitarist Davis Ramey provides sympathetic chordal accompaniment and well-conceived solos, while bassist Harvie Swartz nimbly slips, slaps and slides across his doghouse's full range. The recording itself is beautiful, giving the instruments a naturally dry, reverbless sound, as though the three players were actually in the room with the listener. This is totally acoustic music of the highest quality, recommended without reservation. ~ Jim NewsomJazzTimes (6/99, p.119) - "...There's plenty here to get excited about....offers excellent insight into [Eakle's] lilting lyricism..." Flute Jazz
$15.05 Personnel: Sam Bush (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Jon Randall (vocals, guitar); John Cowan (vocals); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Béla Fleck (banjo, electric banjo); Al Kooper (piano, organ); Mark Winchester (acoustic bass); Larry Atamanuik (drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Dave Sinko. Recording information: The Sound Emporium, Nashville, TN. Photographer: Senor McGuire. Sam Bush's newgrass mandolin playing is at its peak on the appropriately titled Glamour & Grits -- solidly rooted with the traditional feel of the best contemporary bluegrass, but constantly pushing at the edges of composition and performance, giving each song a decidedly progressive feel. Surrounding himself with a blindingly talented list of supporting musicians (Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Al Kooper, among others), Bush still manages to maintain his own presence on the mandolin and even with his own pleasantly everyman vocals. The instrumentals nudge themselves slightly ahead of the vocal tracks, not because Bush is an unpleasant singer, but because the instrumental passages allow the players to focus on the inventive ...

| | Kim Nalley She Put A Spell On Me CD (2006)
Flute Jazz
$12.09 This CD was just shortlisted for a Grammy nomination!Known for her ability to turn a chattering cocktail sipping crowd into a rapt audience of lifelong fans in minutes, Kim Nalley combines a devastating stage presence with finely tuned powerful voice. A trip to San Francisco is often said not be complete without hearing Kim Nalley perform. Glamorous, garrulous and dramatic like a diva of the 1950’s, Kim evokes an era when women were classy and brash. And she is a real community leader to boot; she was the receipient of the “Most Influential African-American in the Bay Area” Cityflight Award 2005 Entertainment Category. This CD was recorded live over five sold out runs of Kim Nalley’s Tribute to Nina Simone since Dr. Simone’s death and all the reviews have been exuberant:“Nina Simone was a singer, a social commentator, and a fighter. Often called the High Priestess of Soul, she was revered for her command of folk, blues, protest songs, and show tunes. So is it any wonder that Kim Nalley's show "She Put a Spell on Me: Kim Sings Nina" has been so popular? Nalley, whose hand in reopening the North ...
