SOUTHERN COMFORT features recordings made in 1949 for Phil Harris and Alice Faye's radio show.
Southern Gentleman of Song is an affordable but brief CD with 11 performances from Phil Harris' radio program, which he co-hosted with his wife, actress Alice Faye. Recorded circa 1949, these airshots were broadcast in the midst of Harris' hitmaking period with RCA, but only one hit song ("That's What I Like About the South") is featured. Harris duets with his wife on "Baby, It's Cold Outside," while the remaining songs are solo vocal performances. In many cases, it is a waste of time for rock bands to re-record a bunch of older songs they are known for; unless the new studio versions really put a fresh or different spin on something, what is the point? But Thrash Anthems is among rock's more noteworthy albums of re-recordings. This 72-minute CD finds German thrash metal veterans Destruction revisiting 13 songs they recorded in the past, including a lot of favorites from the '80s. "Deposition (Your Heads Will Roll)" and "Profanity" (both respectable) are new songs, but every other track on this album (which was recorded in 2006 and released in the U.S. in early 2007) is a re-recording of previously released tunes -- and serious, longtime Destruction fans will recognize "Bestial Invasion," "Mad Butcher," "Curse the Gods," "Invisible Force," and other favorites that the band's 2006 lineup revisits. Although most of the songs are familiar, Thrash Anthems is not a best-of in the true sense; albums of re-recordings are not really best-ofs, and casual listeners would be better off with a true best-of by Destruction. Matthew grew up in the Pacific North West. He started taking guitar lessons when he was 7 and sang in the boy's choir for the Portland Opera Company when he was 12. He began writing folk music in college in the mid 60's and sang with Duke Ellington in the early 70's. He formed a band that played the Benson Hotel in Portland, OR, The Sands Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, The Olympic & Washington Plaza Hotels and Rosario Resort in Washington. In 1980 Matthew was hit by a drunk driver and lost the strength and control of his left hand. Although he continued to write songs it took years of work before he could play again. The 'The Journey' is Matthews first CD. It took 10 years to the day to complete it.
