| A Vintage Must! This is one of my all time favorites. A must whenever it's on tv. From Oliviers smoothness and private self torture to Fontaines understated beauty and frustration to the maid, Mrs. Danvers, played by Judith Anderson with sheer absolute obsession, this is one movie that has had so much influence on those that have come after in this genre (see a particularly funny episode of the Carol Burnett show for their homage). From the beginning (a bright happy vacation setting that slowly and prophetically changes to a mire of dark and deceit)Rebeccas journey of self doubt and ultimate redemption grabs you and keeps you glued. OK, so now that I've told you my "snobby" review..... It's better than most if not all of the more modern mysteries around today. Twists, turns, a wicked obsessed maid, a romance, a ghost, locked rooms, a masquerade ball, it has everything you need for a good viewing of a vintage black and white film. Not one of those short, quicky films, a great sit down and enjoy it film. Karen By vachonesque1 (Roebling, NJ, USA) |

| Superb directing by Hitchcock and acting by Fontaine! I never tire of this excellent example of Hitchcock's dramatic directing. Every shot is a creative masterpiece. Joan Fontaine's awkward, fearful, & unnamed character develops into a mature, beautiful woman as she eventually learns the truth about her husband's mysterious past with Rebecca, his deceased wife. Joan's acting craft as the new Mrs. DeWinter is fantastic during the entire film, but I especially recall the scene where she joyfully descends the stairs in a beautiful gown to please her Maxim, only to be rebuffed by an angry outburst caused by his disturbing memories. As her face falls, Hitchcock subtly moves the camera down to reflect her painful emotion. Every nuance of Joan's thoughts is revealed on her face throughout the film. Judith Anderson successfully portrays the hauntingly bitter servant of the Manderly mansion and defender of the late Mrs. DeWinter.
