One of the early feathers in the cap of the Bad Boy Entertainment empire, the female trio Total got their start backing the Notorious B.I.G. before releasing their self-titled debut in 1996. Unlike the sleek urban contemporary sound of acts like Destiny's Child, Total was driven by classic funk grooves and sassy attitude.
The singers, Kima, Keisha, and Pam, each have their own distinctive style, and that variety adds a pleasing twist to TOTAL. While the album isn't consistent throughout, it does have highlights, with "No One Else" and "Can't You See" (which features Biggie), among them. Funky, slinky, and sensual, TOTAL is a solid R&B album that deserves more attention than it's received since its release.

Gone, but not forgotten I love Total. They are one of my favorite R&B groups. I was in 7th grade when they first came out, and til' this day I am still a fan of theirs. When ever I am in a bad mood, I listen to them and quickly I be in a good mood. I had this album before. Let's just say the person I let borrow it didn't take good care of it at all. I miss them. Too bad they have not came out with another album. Total is a group that is gone but not forgotten. On a personal note, I had a crush on all three of them. They are so sexy to me! | | Total Kima, Keisha & Pam CD (1998)
Total
$9.29 On their second album, '90s soul sistas JaKima Raynor, Keisha Spivey, and Pam Long sex up their lives, and everything around them, quite a bit. Turning their fairly standard take on the hip-hop girl group into a late-night bath of delight, they invite a who's-who roster into the tub with them (producers here include Missy Elliott, Sean "Puffy" Combs, and Heavy D, among others). The best track, "Trippin'," is an Elliott-produced slice of robotic R&B that combines the gals' sweet harmonies with state-of-the-soul-art studio savvy. But the studio-powered Kima, Keisha & Pam ultimately loses its individuality while trying to be a part of the streets and scene, brimming with the sounds of the world around it. ~ Michael Gallucci

| | Hello Stranger: The Best Of Barbara Lewis CD (1994)
Total
$9.29 Recorded between March 1962 and January 1968. Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
Barbara Lewis may not have been one of the toughest or funkiest singers to appear on the Atlantic Records roster, but her hits for the label define pop-soul at its best, especially the subtle but wonderfully sexy "Hello Stranger," one of the most seductive tunes to ever make its way to AM radio. "Baby, I'm Yours" and "Make Me Your Baby" were nearly as memorable, and if Lewis recorded numbers like "Puppy Love" and "My Heart Went Do Dat Da" a bit too often, she had the talent and the class to make something worthwhile of even the silliest material (and as it happens, she also wrote the latter two songs, as well as the sublime "Hello Stranger"). In 1994, Rhino Records released a definitive single-disc collection of Lewis' recordings for Atlantic, Hello Stranger: The Best of Barbara Lewis, and Rhino's British branch has recycled this compilation as part of their Platinum Collection series of soul hits packages. The packaging for The Platinum Collection isn't quite as attractive as Hello Stranger, and it lacks the earlier disc's fine liner notes and detailed information on the original recordings, but this does contain the same twenty songs in the same order, all sung with cool passion and an easygoing sensuality by the remarkable Lewis, and from a musical standpoint you can't do much better than this. Anyone who still makes make-out mixtapes in this day and age will want to have a copy of "Hello Stranger" on hand, and the rest of this collection won't spoil the mood, either. ~ Mark Deming

| | Magic Sam Rockin' Wild In Chicago CD (2002)
Total
$12.89 Back in the '60s and '70s -- before bootleggers had the generally higher standards that they have today -- it wasn't uncommon to hear a collector defending a bootleg LP despite its inferior sound quality. The argument was usually something along the lines of, "Yes, the sound is poor, but I still recommend this Led Zeppelin bootleg because Jimmy Page absolutely burns when they do 'Whole Lotta Love.'" Rockin' Wild in Chicago isn't a bootleg -- this Delmark release is totally legal -- but it merits the same sort of defense that vinyl collectors often gave '60s and '70s bootlegs back in the day. A collection of live performances that spans 1963-1968 but didn't come out until 2002, Rockin' Wild in Chicago was recorded at three different Windy City venues: the Copacabana, the Alex Club, and Mother Blues. This CD definitely won't impress audiophiles; the sound quality ranges from barely decent to genuinely bad (by '60s standards). But the performances themselves are generally excellent. Magic Sam was among the most exciting Chicago bluesmen of the '60s, and the singer/guitarist is downright explosive whether he turns his attention to "Got My Mojo Working," "Further on Up the Road," or Lowell Fulson's "It's All Your Fault, Baby." The less-than-stellar rating that this CD merits isn't due to the quality of Sam's performances; it is due to the sound quality. And because the sound is as disappointing as it is, Rockin' Wild in Chicago isn't recommended to casual listeners -- there are several excellent Magic Sam CDs on Delmark that aren't plagued by inferior sound. Rockin' Wild in Chicago is strictly for the late bluesman's more devoted fans, who will probably want a copy despite the inferior sound. ~ Alex Henderson
When Magic Sam passed away in 1969 at the age of 32, the world lost one of the greatest bluesmen of all time, robbing Sam of his place in blues history. He, along with a very few others, created the West Side style of Chicago blues, the style copied most
