Many of the seemingly dozens of "Ellington Meets..." albums out there are specious, cynical attempts to cash in on the Duke's good name. This is not one of them. Pianist Cliff Korman and alto saxophonist Paulo Moura are savvy interpreters of Ellington's coolly sophisticated tunes, and the decision to pair them with those of Brazilian composer Pixinguinha (a contemporary of Ellington's who, if such a thing is possible, holds an even higher place in the pantheon of Brazilian popular music than Ellington does in jazz) is absolutely brilliant. Ellington and Pixinguinha both brought new levels of melodic sophistication to their respective musics, and Moura and Korman treat the pair as equals, bringing a subtle Brazilian flavor to songs like Ellington's "Moonglow" as they impart a jazzy mellowness to Pixinguinha ballads like "Lamentos." Excellent stuff, although the three spoken tracks between the nine proper duets add nothing to the album as a whole. ~ Stewart Mason Mood Ingenuo: Pixinguinha Meets Duke Ellington Music Mood Ingenuo: Pixinguinha Meets Duke Ellington Review

Mood Ingenuo: Pixinguinha Meets Duke Ellington album
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. ...

Mood Ingenuo: Pixinguinha Meets Duke Ellington album
$44.15 The album NEW YORK CITY, released in 2003 under the name the Peter Malick Group, found Grammy-winning singer Norah Jones joining guitarist Malick for a session of mellow, rootsy blues tracks. Jones's gauzy vocals fit perfectly with the mood of the music, and the album was a success. THE CHILL ALBUM, released subsequently, featured downtempo DJ remixes of NEW YORK CITY's tracks, while THE REMIX ALBUM, another remix treatment of the Jones/Malick project, focused on groove-oriented versions.
THE DELUXE NEW YORK CITY COLLECTION brings together all three albums. A glance at the track list might frighten off those unfamiliar with the albums, since the same six song titles appear over and over across the 31 tracks of the double album. But the DJ tracks are so radically transformed that they may as well have come from a different universe (while still retaining the enticing, relaxed mood of the originals). The set comes recommended to fans of Jones, contemporary blues, and downtempo electronica.
"Here, in the tradition of Billie Holiday was a stunningly beautiful, blues infused voice. This was my first contact with Norah Jones." Peter Malick was not talking about hearing COME AWAY WITH ME for the first time, but about encountering an unknown artist working in the trenches of New York City clubs approximately two years before Ms. Jones's Grammy deluge. Fortunately for Malick, Jones was receptive to the idea of working together on some of his own bluesy material. The resulting sessions, recorded in 2000 and released here as the EP-length NEW YORK CITY, give listeners an opportunity to hear an even younger Jones, one who still sounds impossibly seasoned and very much the self-assured artist.
Malick, who was a teenage protege of blues great Otis Spann over 30 years ago, contributes full-bodied and tasty guitar accompaniment. Though the material and production values on NYC aren't quite up to the standard of Jones's debut on Blue Note, her contribution as lead vocalist justifies the adage "it's the singer not the song," ensuring that this release is worthy of attention.
The story goes that, in 2000, while pianist/vocalist ...

Mood Ingenuo: Pixinguinha Meets Duke Ellington CD music
$9.29 Multi-instrumental musicians from Columbus, Ohio; making genre-bending music that has rap, beats, grooves, keyboards, guitars, scratches, riffs, jams, feedback, sweat, laughs, beers, blues and truths. The Lab Rats are defined by a Rock and Roll mentality and a blue collar reality; explained within the realm of hip hop, blues, rock & electronica; determined to make new music.Coming from the lower-middle class land of suburbia, lyricist/guitarist, Brian Brown delivers observations taken from his life and the world around him. With 30 menial day jobs under his belt and the loans from his unfinished community college days almost paid off, he has chosen the pen as his weapon to combat the doldrums of a Midwestern, working class lifestyle. DJ KW is the beatmaking part of this duo. Deeply experienced in the making and DJing of electronic music, KW is steeply entrenched in a multi-instrumental world of keyboards, laptops, guitars, hand percussion. KW loves technology and loves it equally in his studio and on your stage. In addition to blazing his pedal steel guitar, he uses two Numark CD-X digital turntables and KORG synths. This is the second offering from this Columbus based Hip Hop duo. It's front porch stories of ghost trains that visit you in the night. It's an existential exercise that explains the purpose of your nervous system. It's a guide to stretching pennies and the art of scratching lottery tickets. It's a deadbeat dad story that would make Oprah Winfrey weep. It's a conspiracy theory from a delirious lyricist. It's half full ashtrays and half empty glasses. Everything you hear on this record (beats, clinks, riffs, ...
