Gangsta Rap, from some gentlemen who know a thing or two about the style.
Ice Cube, W.C. and Mack 10 are the core of this outfit, and the tracks cover the usual subjects: urban violence, drug dealing, and general anti-establishment behavior. The sound is west coast all the way, with flowing, quick-tempo raps over sparse, repetitive beats. Few surprises here musically; "Bow Down" is typical of the lot, as the crew demands respect from those who would dare to challenge their supreme authority as rappers, gangsters, and Mack Daddies. There's also some coastal rivalry here: in "All the Critics in New York" Cube voices his displeasure with the rappers he used to respect, but who now criticize and, even worse, imitate him. This is raw, straight-up urban music, not for young children or the faint of heart.

Rolling Stone (12/12/96, p.86) - 3.5 Stars (out of 5) - "...Ice Cube is one of the few rap artists...still capable of making you think, even if you don't agree with a word he says....the West Coast's answer to what the group believes is years of 'criticism and disrespect' from the East Coast..." Vibe (12/96, p.186) - "...BOW DOWN will no doubt be bouncin' every hooptie west of the Hudson..." The Source (12/96, p.123) - 4.5 Mics (out of 5) - "...BOW DOWN is the best Ice Cube-related project in years--10 tracks and three skits of well-executed and tightly produced songs....All three Westside Connection MCs put their all into this...as evidenced by their delivery..." Westside Connection Bow Down Songs Bow Down Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews to the west this is a very well done record by 3 of Raps most elite personalities. Cube, Dub, & Mack definitely knew what they were doin when they made this record. The beats are amazing on all the tracks. This is one you can listen to straight through and not feel any need to hit the skip button. For me all these songs were hot from the first time i heard them. If you're a fan of the whole West Coast gangsta rap thing, You GOTTA HAVE THIS! My Fav tracks are "All the Critics in New York", "Do you like Criminals", "Gangsta's make the World go Round", "Westward Ho!", & "Hoo Bangin'"...although like i said, all the tracks are badass. peace

Solid These rappers are gangsta masterminds. The relese of this album embarked on a whole new venture for westcoast. Bringing back that NWA feel but Better. Masterfull production and themes. Real, heavy, timeless, rhymes fading every wannabe trio like them. These rappers really compliment each other and stand even taller together. This group along with Tha Dogg Pound have the most unique and anticipated sounds in rap, period. Phenomenal lyrics make this a MUST! Bow Down album
$14.55 Although the label was named for them, Rounder Records does not contain a complete repository of the works of the Holy Modal Rounders. In fact, only the group's 1975 album, Alleged in Their Own Time, and its 1999 reunion disc, Too Much Fun!, were released on Rounder. But due to their marginal commercial appeal and their own inclinations, the Rounders have been inherently unstable as a band through the years, frequently splitting into different configurations, such that members have participated in several other recordings of a like sensibility, including Michael Hurley's Have Moicy, Long Journey, and Snockgrass and Jeffrey Frederich's Spiders in the Moonlight. The band's two founding members, Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber, reunited as Stampfel & Weber for Rounder's Going Nowhere Fast album in 1981, and Stampfel's post-Rounders band the Bottlecaps made Peter Stampfel and the Bottlecaps for the label. All of these albums are drawn upon for this compilation, which therefore presents a comprehensive look at the varied styles and assorted craziness of Rounders music from the '70s, '80s, and '90s. There is, first of all, the original band, dominated by Stampfel and Weber, who draw on traditional folk and old-timey country, but to strange effect. They capture the semi-professional style of '20s hillbilly ...

| | Mantronix Album CD (1985) (Import)
Bow Down music CDs
$11.79 Curtis "Mantronik" Khaleel was often quoted as saying that his mission was to "take rap a step beyond the streets," and the innovative producer/mixmaster accomplished that goal on Mantronix's debut album, Mantronix: The Album. This excellent 1985 LP was way ahead of its time; while the rapping of Mantronix's partner MC Tee is pure mid-'80s New York hip-hop, the production is anything but conventional. On gems like "Needle to the Groove," "Bassline," and the hit "Fresh Is the Word," you can hear the parallels between Tee's rhyming and the East Coast b-boy rhymes that Run-D.M.C., LL Cool J, and the Fat Boys were providing in 1985. But the album's high-tech, futuristic production sets it apart from other New York hip-hop of the mid-'80s, and even though one of the LP's tracks is titled "Hardcore Hip-Hop," Mantronix had a hard time appealing to hip-hop's hardcore. Mantronix: The Album actually fared better in dance music, electro-funk, and club circles than it did among hardcore b-boys. But this is definitely a hip-hop record, and it is also Mantronix's ...
