Dmx It's Dark and Hell Is Hot CD (1998)
War & Peace, Vol. I: The War Disc songs In 1998, DMX brings new energy to a laid-back hip-hop scene. While various MCs have been busy partying and dancing, DMX has been amping himself up for a powerful debut. IT'S DARK AND HELL IS HOT is the first full-length release from the rapper, despite an attempt to break through in 1993. It wasn't until legendary rap label Def Jam got a hold of him that DMX's career began to take off. While being featured on a number of blazing posse cuts, DMX took hip-hoppers to the next level with his smash single, "Get At Me Dog." With tight production and lyrical gymnastics, DMX puts the hardcore back into hip-hop.

Every once in a while someone makes an album that actually means something. This time around, Outkast is that someone, and AQUEMINI is that album. With their first album, Outkast created Southern hip-hop, and with their second album, they further defined it. Then, rap groups from the South really took off, and took the sound of the South with them, far from the boundaries set by Big Boi and Dre. However, the two innovative MCs break new ground with AQUEMINI, their third album, not to reclaim their reign of the dirty South, but to establish their mark in the universal scheme of hip-hop.
Rap music needs AQUEMINI for its lyrical consciousness, its musical creativity, and its accessibility. One of the album's most impressive qualities is its ability to keep it real without self-consciousness. Outkast takes an everyday situation and turns it into an amazing storytelling journey into outer space. Songs such as the seven-minute "SpottieOttieDopaliscious" that feature live instruments and poetic lyrics are Outkast at their best.

Method Man Tical 2000: Judgement Day CD (1998)
War & Peace, Vol. I: The War Disc buy CD music Returning with his sophomore solo album JUDGEMENT DAY, Johnny Blaze once again brings the pain, on a smashing collection of nineteen tracks. With the energy of a whirlwind and the fierceness of a hurricane, Method Man rips through tracks produced by Havoc ("Play IV Keeps"), True Master ("Grid Iron Rap"), Erick Sermon ("Step By Step") and of course, The RZA ("Perfect World"). The initial single and title track, "Judgement Day", is an all-out, up tempo track that just makes you move. Appearances from Cappadonna ("Sweet Love"), Redman ("Big Dogs") and Streetlife ("Suspect Chin Music") make for interesting play off of Meth's dynamic delivery. Some of the other highlights on this varied, hard-hitting release are "Torture", "Cradle Rock" and a serious posse cut "Spazzola", which features Streetlife, Raekwon, Masta Killa, Killer Sin and Inspectah Deck.

Mystikal Ghetto Fabulous CD (1998)
War & Peace, Vol. I: The War Disc songs One could be forgiven for assuming that the creative process for a No Limit production involves Master P calling in the usual posse of guest artists along with the Beats by the Pound production crew and letting loose. In reality, while there's a common artistic thread linking the albums of Steady Mobbin', C-Murder and the like, it's their individuality that makes them intriguing and listenable. Nowhere is this more obvious than on GHETTO FABULOUS.
Mystikal does call on the considerable talents of Snoop Dogg, Silkk the Shocker and other labelmates, but the full frontal assault of GHETTO FABULOUS is all his own. Mystikal's agitated, effectively over-the-top rapping style is the perfect medium for conveying the claustrophobic urban warzone scenarios of tracks like "There He Go" and "The Stick Up." Sparse production leaves more space in the tracks for Mystikal's eminently room-filling vocal presence, which is the rightful focus of GHETTO FABULOUS.
Personnel: O'Dell, Anita Thomas (background vocals).
Audio Mixer: Beats by the Pound.
Recording information: No Limit Studios.
Personnel: Mystikal, Guillotine, Snoop Dogg, Silkk The Shocker, C-Murder, Master P, Busta Rhymes, Mia X, Fiend, Naughty By Nature, Mac (rap vocals); Charlie Wilson (vocals); KLC (scratches); Anita Thomas, O'Dell (background vocals).
Producers include: KLC, Carlos Stevens, Mo B Dick, Craig B, Dez.

War & Peace, Vol. 2: The Peace Disc CD (2000)
War & Peace, Vol. I: The War Disc album for sale The second volume of WAR & PEACE proved that Ice Cube had not mellowed with age, the strains of a critically acclaimed film career notwithstanding. Much of the disc aspires to the sort of relentless intensity Cube hadn't matched since his solo debut, AMERIKKA'S MOST WANTED. While more restrained than the Bomb Squad's hyperkinetic collages of sound, Dr. Dre's laid-back grooves are a perfect match for Cube's acerbic ghetto wit and biting social commentary. Rolling drum programming and bouncy Roger Troutman-style basslines give the album an old-school feel. Much of the album marries intense grooves and polished production with humorous skits; "Pimp Homeo," for example, is a funny takeoff on ROMEO AND JULIET. Tracks like "Until We Rich," on the other hand, are more laid-back R&B affairs, with more reflective, socially conscious lyrics. While nothing on the set approaches the political and social fire that categorize AMERIKKA'S MOST WANTED, WAR & PEACE still manages to showcase a rap legend at the top of his form.
