Mack 10 doesn't come across as an original on his self-titled debut, he comes across as a follower. Over a standard G-funk backdrop, complete with deep bass and whining synths, Mack 10 dishes out a multitude of clichéd gangsta lyrics -- he simply lacks personality. The only time Mack 10 comes alive is when his mentor, Ice Cube, appears on "West Side Slaughter House." Cube adds fire and rage to an album that desperately needs more passion. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Entertainment Weekly (7/14/95, pp.55-56) - "...draws heavily from '70s funk and R&B stars like Rick James and Earth, Wind & Fire....Mack 10 has buoyancy, an eye for detail, and sneering vocals not unlike [Ice Cube], his platinum-selling producer." - Rating: B+ The Source (8/95, p.80) - 3.5 Mics - Dope - "...abrasive funk production which is ideal for Mack's steady and solid flow....lyrically...he's not just another Ice Cube clone..." Rap Pages (8/95, p.30) - 7 (out of 10) - "...It's the lyrical integrity and originality....Outside of Mack 10's lurid G manual, you'll find him justifying--taking care of his baby girl..." Mack 10 album
$8.29 The acknowledged head of the Wu-Tang Clan, Genius (a.k.a. GZA) delivers the fifth Wu-banger with his sophomore solo album. Musically, LIQUID SWORDS is the Clan's strongest solo release to date, and lyrically, Genius comes correct with a style he describes as "too swift to bite."
LIQUID SWORDS contains two types of songs, all backed by the RZA's skillful production. On the one hand, Genius schools the Clan's followers through songs that address serious problems experienced in every day inner-city life. "Cold World," which is backed by whirling wind sound, contains mini-stories that illustrate the misfortunes of gun-slinging in the hip-hop community. "Investigative Reports" goes even deeper in administering the blame, suggesting that drug-related crimes stem from a higher authority. On the other hand, there are the Clan's kung-fu metaphors, which show up on Genius' more Wu-styled songs. On "Duel Of The Iron Mic," he's joined by a number of fellow Clansmen to reinstate the idea that no one can match them, despite numerous attempts to copy their image and concepts. Similarly, the production on songs like "4th Chamber" and "Shadowboxin'" closely relates them to ENTER THE 36 CHAMBERS, and helps make LIQUID SWORDS a complete Wu release.
The song titles of LIQUID SWORDS do not appear in order on the CD package.
Personnel includes: Genius/GZA a.k.a. Maximillion, Lou Diamonds a.k.a. Raekwon The Chef, Tony Starks a.k.a. Ghost Face Killer, Lucky Hands a.k.a. U-God, Ol' Dirty Bastard a.k.a. Dirt Megirt, Rolly Fingers a.k.a. Inspectah Deck, Johnny Blaze a.k.a. Method Man, Master Killer a.k.a. Noodles, Killah Priest, Dreddy Kruger, Life (vocals).
| | Wu-Tang Clan Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) CD (1993)
Mack 10 CD music
$9.59 The Wu-Tang Clan seemed to come out of nowhere when they released their first independent single, "Protect Ya Neck." To the industry's surprise, it sold over 10,000 copies and enabled this conceptually innovative crew to land a deal with RCA. ENTER THE WU-TANG (36 CHAMBERS) is the first effort to "take you on" the full "lyrical high" of the Wu-Tang--eight "killer bees" who stem from that forgotten borough of New York City, Staten Island.
Prince Rakeem "The RZA" may dominate the loosely-based group's production chamber, but the success of the Wu-Tang should be credited to all. "Clan In Da Front" gives The Genius (aka "The GZA") the opportunity to prove to critics of his former solo career that he's far from played out. To the liking of many hardcore ruffnecks, "Shame On A Nigga" unites the Clan's most distinctive vocalists, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Method Man and Raekwon The Chef; and fellow members Inspector Deck, Ghost Face Killer and U-God join forces on the album's highlight, "Da Mystery Of Chessboxin'." Both cuts prove the Wu-Tang to be the most lyrically diverse rap group on the streets today.
The Clan's alliances in the hip-hop community have already brought about crazy recognition to their brother-artists (The Gravediggaz, Shyheim aka The Rugged Child, Method Man's solo work), showing that the Wu-Tang's influence can be found in both the studio and the market-place. So, while they may have been dissed in previous incarnations, the Wu-Tang Clan understand that power comes from unity and that their's is far-reaching; or as they put it, "we form like Voltron."
Recorded at Firehouse Studio, New York.
Wu-Tang Clan: Prince Rakeem "The RZA" (rap vocals, programming); The Method Man, U-God, Rebel Ins, Shallah Raekwon, Ghost Face Killer, Ol' Dirty Bastard, The Genius "The GZA," Masta Killa (rap vocals).
Additional personnel: The 4th Disciple (scratches).
| | Westside Connection Bow Down CD (1996)
Mack 10 music CDs
$8.96 Gangsta Rap, from some gentlemen who know a thing or two about the style.
Ice Cube, W.C. and Mack 10 are the core of this outfit, and the tracks cover the usual subjects: urban violence, drug dealing, and general anti-establishment behavior. The sound is west coast all the way, with flowing, quick-tempo raps over sparse, repetitive beats. Few surprises here musically; "Bow Down" is typical of the lot, as the crew demands respect from those who would dare to challenge their supreme authority as rappers, gangsters, and Mack Daddies. There's also some coastal rivalry here: in "All the Critics in New York" Cube voices his displeasure with the rappers he used to respect, but who now criticize and, even worse, imitate him. This is raw, straight-up urban music, not for young children or the faint of heart.
Recorded at Westsiiiiide Studios, California and Treehouse Studios, South Africa.

| | Mack 10 Based On A True Story CD (1997)
Mack 10 songs
$10.59 BASED ON A TRUE STORY is full of straight-up gangsta rap and tales of guns and drugs and gang bangin', west coast style. Mack 10 teams up with some high-powered company on this one, as Ice Cube lends a hand on two of the tracks. The themes are predictable enough; ghetto life, revenge and retribution, drug dealing and the consequences of crossing the wrong man. But musically, Mack 10 does has some intriguing ideas. "Chicken Hawk 2" uses some interesting samples, including bird calls, staccato horns, and synthetic strings. "Inglewood Swingin'" is a tribute to Mack 10's home turf, while "Mack 10, Mack 10" makes sure that 1) we spell the man's name right and 2) we know who, in fact, "the man" is. Another attractive feature of this disc is the beats, which are well-matched to the raps, and all achieve a certain degree of funkiness.

| | Mack 10 Recipe CD (1998)
Mack 10 album
$10.49 On THE RECIPE, Mack 10 brings new meaning to the term "hardcore," offering up some of the nastiest, most unrepentant, downright sociopathic tales of hard-ass derring-do ever to assault listeners' ears. If you're already squeamish about gangsta rap, you'd best look elsewhere for your entree into that style, because THE RECIPE is strictly for the core audience.
Foxy Brown, Funkmaster Flex, Jayo Felony and even Snoop Doggy Dogg turn in guest appearances here, but the focus is clearly on Mack 10 and his merciless rhymes. Railing against society, women, his peers, and any other perceived nemesis, Mack 10 comes across as a man with a boulder-sized chip on his shoulder, but if you're so inclined, his brand of unalleviated fury makes for some serious catharsis. THE RECIPE is guaranteed to offend, and that's just the way the gleefully in-your-face Mack 10 likes it.

| | Ice Cube Bootlegs & B-Sides CD (1994)
Mack 10 CD music
$11.85 Once again Ice Cube commits you to check yo self, yo tapes, yo CDs and yo wax. BOOTLEGS & B-SIDES gives up what you missed by only buying the long-playing releases and not the singles; providing essential obscurities and miscellaneous collectibles (i.e. remixes and b-sides galore). And Cube-style remixes do not just add samples and beats, but mark the creation of entirely new tracks with various loop and lyrical changes. So if you thought the ballad-like "What Can I Do?" was nice and warm the first time around, beware the included remix which drops with more of a hardcore funk feel.
The b-sides represent Ice Cube doing what he does best--telling stories. The tales range from "sexual escapades" ("2 N The Morning") to being condemned because of one's skin tone ("My Skin Is My Sin"). All the while Cube's lyrical ferocity provides insights into the "perpetrator's" point of view, mischievously jabbing at the system, and generally portraying the strange comedy that life presents us and that lies just around the corner.
Thus, BOOTLEGS AND B-SIDES is a must purchase not only for Ice Cube devotees, but for any one who loves to hear a story told with bounce, humor, South Central panache, and a realistic urban tone. Track it down-- borrowing something this phat would just not be enough.
Engineers: Mike Dean (track 8); Rob Chiarelli (track 12).
Personnel: Ice Cube (vocals).
Personnel: Ice Cube (vocals); N.O. Joe Johnson (vocals, keyboards); Das EFX (vocals); Stan "The Guitar Man" Jones (guitar); Mike Dean (keyboards); Mr. X, Shemen Taylor (background vocals).
Producers include: Ice Cube, D.J. Pooh, Dr. Jam, Madness 4 Real, Mr. Woody.

| | Hieroglyphics Full Circle CD (2003) (Import) Bonus DVD; Bonus Track; Japan
Mack 10 album
$35.49 Sometime in the 1990s, a group of maverick rappers in Oakland gathered under a name befitting the sharp, cerebral, often oblique skills of its members: Hieroglyphics. The collective includes the talented, prolific Del tha Funkee Homosapien and the gifted freestyler Casual, along with Souls of Mischief (Opio, Phesto, Tajai and A-Plus), the multi-talented Pep Love, and producer Domino (not to be confused with the Long Beacher who sang "Getto Jam"), most of whom already had successful albums before releasing THIRD EYE VISION together in 1998.
The Hieroglyphics crew returns five years later with all members intact on the thoroughly captivating FULL CIRCLE, and it's precisely the kind of record one would hope for from such an eclectic cast of eccentrics who've been rapping together for over a decade. The Hieroglyphics possess some of the most acute, inventive, imaginative wordsmiths in the rap universe, Swiftian minds capable of composing lines like "my rhymes is illegible, but still legendary" or refrains like "put your hands where your halo at" with ease. However, the mix still wouldn't work if the vocals didn't mesh, and far from spoiling the soup, the ridiculously many cooks play off each other, particularly Del and Casual, two of the most idiosyncratic voices in hip-hop.
Additional personnel includes: Goapele, Abstract Rude, Michael Ashburne, Alexandra Lalinde, Caroline Bazzichi, Herb Lee, Big Boy, Big Tigger.
Japanese pressing includes bonus track. Rush. 2005.
Recorded at Hiero Studio, Venice, California.
