Amsterdam label Konkurrent's "In the Fishtank" EP series allows artists to experiment with different approaches in an off-the-cuff setting. For Tortoise's Fishtank session, the Chicago post-rockers decided to collaborate with Dutch punk band The Ex. The results are an original, unusual mixture of Tortoise's subtle, dubby grooves and The Ex's angular, hard-hitting, guitar-driven attack. Over the course of six tunes, the two bands join together to create a constantly shifting vortex of sound that's alternately meditative and aggressive. There's more urgency here than on any of Tortoise's previous recordings, but the complex textural palette that is the Tortoise trademark is nevertheless well represented.
EP Recorded At Amsterdam Based Company Called KonkurrentCMJ (5/17/99, p.25) - "...Sure, [Tortoise's] gliding beats and electronics occasionally climb atop the trebly, percussive jungle gym, but the Ex's inflamed, adrenalized mood prevails throughout..." In The Fishtank album
$11.59 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
Electronics permeate all twelve tracks here, adding textural shadings that seemed like foreign turf for the band when it first came together as an all-star crew of Chicago indie multi-instrumentalists in the early '90s. Cluster, Mouse On Mars and drum 'n' bass now hold equal footing on Tortoise's soundstage, beautifying the peripheral space while the quintet (Dave Pajo plays on the album, but is no longer a full-time member) improvises over, riffs on, and generally recontextualizes various jazzy, "out" musical styles of the last thirty years.
Generally, TNT's compositions flow out of the Ennio Morricone vibe that has always been present in their work. Lush, southwestern-desert guitar lines build the axis. The inevitable vibes provide both rhythmic undertow and curt, melodic counterpoint. Electronic studio ...

| | Tortoise It's All Around You CD (2004)
In The Fishtank music CDs
$13.15 In the second half of the 1990s, Chicago's Tortoise embodied the forward-looking, genre-bending, usually instrumental style that came to be known as post-rock. They've been refining their approach ever since, and IT'S ALL AROUND YOU offers an extremely concise version of the almost-indefinable Tortoise sound. Many of the familiar sonic signposts are here--the jazzy vibes, the polyrhythmic drum patterns, and the Morricone-influenced, heavy-reverb guitar. The overdubbed layers of vocals on "The Lithium Stiffs" are a new development, marking the first time anyone in ...
| | Amores Perros DVD (2001) Widescreen
In The Fishtank songs
$6.99 Alejandro Gonzalez Iniarritu makes an electrifying directorial debut with AMORES PERROS, an energetic, assured motion picture that jumps off the screen with a seemingly boundless energy. Told in three separate chapters--OCTAVIO AND SUSANA, DANIEL AND VALERIA, and EL CHIVO AND MARU--the film deals with love in the lives of several individuals residing in modern day Mexico City. Octavio (Gael Garcia Bernal) has fallen in love with his brother's wife, Susana (Vanessa Bauche). He ...
| | Tortoise Standards CD (2001)
In The Fishtank album
$12.95 Chicago's post-rock godfathers Tortoise use STANDARDS as an opportunity to scale down from the computer-based constructions of their previous TNT. Instead of incorporating their former cut-and-paste method of composition on their fourth full-length album, the quintet return to playing and interacting with each other in a live setting, resulting in a much more organic feel.
The opener "The Benway" begins STANDARDS auspiciously, with rubato bursts of distorted guitar and free-floating drums, in an homage to jazz-rock ...
| | Mogwai Rock Action CD (2001)
In The Fishtank CD music
$9.75 Principally recorded at Tarbox Road, Cassadaga, New York and Cava Studios, Glasgow, Scotland.
From the opening static surge of "Sine Wave" to the majestic closer "Secret Pint," ROCK ACTION is Mogwai at its best. For this 2001 album, the Scottish post-rock band reigns in much of the bombast of earlier recordings, opting for melody and texture over all else. Guitarist Stuart Braithwaite contributes more vocals than ever before, though they're often hushed or heavily treated, and Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys lends his voice to the haunting "Dial: Revenge." While the ominous, amped-up "You Don't Know Jesus" is the closest that the record comes to living up to its cheeky ...

$12.49 A two-for-one CD reissue of Margie Joseph's two early-'70s albums for Stax, with the addition of lengthy liner notes by Stax authority Rob Bowman. Like some of Stax's product from this era, there's a Stax-meets-Motown air to much of the material. Although Margie Joseph Makes a New Impression was cut in Memphis and Muscle Shoals, ...
