| | Don Fagerquist Music To Fill A Void CD Don Fagerquist Discography of CDs
Trumpeter/arranger Fagerquist defines the typical West Coast cool sound, and his band plays every nuance, phrase, and measure in hushed tones as a reserved, attractive, easily likable pure jazz persona. The band features such notables as alto saxophonist Herb Geller, valve trombonist Bob Enevoldsen, pianist/arranger Marty Paich, and drummer Mel Lewis. Lesser knowns such as second trumpeter Ed Leddy, baritone saxophonist Ronnie Lang, bassist Buddy Clark, and French horn player Vince DeRosa prove their mettle amongst the tall California redwood big names. The octet plays eight reworked standards, some like "Easy to Love" much cooler than the others, and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" a fine, full, and mellow ballad, both trumpet led. Though typical of '50s cool, "Aren't You Glad You're You?" has a hopping "Would You Like to Swing on a Star"-type melody, trumpet and trombone upfront, piano setting up the horns who throw this melody down, while the easy swinger "All the Things You Are" is somewhat predictable but rich in harmonic content. It's clear this is Fagerquist's session and he deals the melodic cards on "The Song Is You," the others playing a second line, then the whole section counterpoints the third. They're all over the place, bouncing here and there during "Time After Time," and DeRosa leads into trumpet on "Easy Living," followed by a tip-toe traipsing bridge chart for all. The most challenging arrangement crops up on "Lullaby of Birdland." The first half of the melody is cleanly stated, the other half broken up and reassembled several times over, a good swinger as Geller's alto gets the spotlight in a Bird-like solo with more counterpoint and Enevoldsen's trombone trading lines with Geller. This is a sleeper, one that doesn't jump out and grab you graphically, and the names are innocent, most notably Fagerquist's. Still it's a session that should not be ignored as one of the hallmarks of Pacific jazz expressionism in those feel-good times and a pivot point in jazz recordings of glorious 1957. Highly recommended. ~ Michael G. Nastos
Don Fagerquist is probably one of the most under-recognized trumpet players in jazz. His skill is right up there with Fats Navarro and Clifford Brown, but because he recorded only this album as leader, he has not received the acclaim he deserves. Much of

$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Music To Fill A Void
$11.59 Collectables Records' two-fer of Bobby Short's 1959 album The Mad Twenties and My Personal Property from 1963 matches up two quite different releases on the same CD, both pleasing works on their own. The Mad Twenties, as its name suggests, is a collection of songs from the 1920s. Short and arranger/conductor Phil Moore have put together small bands consisting of a few horns and a rhythm section to play the material in an authentic Dixieland style, and Short not only sings with his usual style but also effectively apes some of the styles of the day, including crooning on "Sweet So and So" and "I'm Bringing a Red, Red Rose," and plaintively reciting the pathetic sentiments of "Laugh, Clown, Laugh." The album is a wonderful evocation ...

Music To Fill A Void
$10.15 Since the age of 11 the MC/Producer known as Bellicose dreamed of becoming a rap star. Beatboxing, breakdancing and rapping was the new culture that was sweeping through the hoods of Detroit in the 80's. Hip Hop music became the soundtrack to the lives of those born in Generation X. Bellicose (known as Kareem back then) stayed with a boombox and always had the latest Run DMC, KRS-One, Rakim, Just-Ice, Stetsasonic, Steady B and Kool Moe Dee cassette tapes. He became more than a fan when he was asked to perform in a Junior High talent show with fellow hip hop fiends. In the song "1241", Bellicose describes best how his love for rapping ignited, "Walking through schoolhouse doors, Hearing my name echoing off them parquet floors, When I stepped onstage, In eighth grade, All the people got hype at the rhymes I made, I love this sh....". It wasn't until he entered college that he became serious about pursuing a rap career. He teamed up with a fellow student/rapper from Dallas and formed the group The Nati. They did shows on campus and at various clubs in Chicago performing on the same stages as Twista, Do or Die, Too Short, Crucial Conflict and the Infamous Syndicate (Shawnna--DTP & Teefa--WGCI DJ).
