This CD from V.S.O.P. reissues a fairly obscure Tampa LP featuring pianist Marty Paich (better-known as an arranger), altoist Art Pepper, bassist Buddy Clark and drummer Frank Capp; the music on Marty Paich Quartet, Vol. 9 has also been issued under Pepper's name. Pepper and Paich would have several notable collaborations during the next few years, but this was their first. Pepper is generally the main star (particularly on such numbers as "You and the Night and the Music," "Over the Rainbow" and "All the Things You Are") while Paich (who has several fine piano solos) contributes three of the eight songs to this cool-toned, but hard-swinging set. ~ Scott Yanow
Classic 1956 session, generally regarded as Art Pepper's first recording after being released from Federal prison for drug possession. Fearing the stigma, Tampa Records decided to release it under Marty Paich's leadership. Today, this is one of the most

Marty Paich Quartet songs
$14.55 (MP3 Available for Download) A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop ...
| | Chico Freeman Lenox Avenue Breakdown CD (1978)
Marty Paich Quartet album
$13.49 In addition to having excellent cover art (an illustrated cityscape in which a giant saxophone--complete with windows, a doorway, and stoop--takes its place among the neighboring buildings), LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN is also a dynamic, unjustly overlooked jazz album. Prodigiously talented as an instrumentalist and composer, alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe was one of the most innovative jazz musicians of the 1970s and '80s, and LENOX AVENUE BREAKDOWN, his Columbia Records debut, proves it.
Blythe's ability to marry the best of the genre's traditions (he is equally versed in swing, post-bop, and romantic styles) with his avant-garde leanings is evident here. "Odessa," for example, a modal exploration, begins melodically, yet pushes further into free-jazz territory as the tune progresses. The angular bop of the title track is offset by adventurous soloing and unique instrumentation (flute ...

| | Dave Holland Extended Play: Live At Birdland CDs (2003)
Marty Paich Quartet MP3 Album
$21.15 (MP3 Available for Download) EXTENDED PLAY was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album.
With a front line that features saxophone, trombone, and vibraphone/marimba, the Dave Holland Quintet features an immediately identifiable band sound. As for backing, bassist Holland and traps man Billy Kilson provide a push-me-pull-you, supple and responsive rhythm section that is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to accompaniment ideas.
The thing that separates the men from the boys in the world of jazz improvisation is listening--when the performers are paying close attention to one another, the creative horizons are all but limitless. It would be a slight to say this quintet is all on the ...

From the R&B grooves of "Midnight Magic" to the crisp romanticism of "Spanish Nights," it's easy to see why PARADISE earned the soprano sax king of smooth jazz numerous Grammy nominations. Though the esteemed Mr. Gorelick is aided here ...

Marty Paich Quartet CD music
$18.75 The Motion Trio might well be aptly named, since their fingers must never stop moving. The three Polish accordionists work hard to expand the possibilities of the instrument and the format on their North American debut, Pictures from the Street, and very definitely succeed. "Train to Heaven" has some wonderfully interlinked lines and rhythms that work off and ...
