Mel Lewis, formerly with the Stan Kenton Orchestra (and at the time a busy West Coast studio musician), had a rare opportunity to lead a record date in 1957 when he headed this sextet session for the MOD (Music of the Day) label. With arrangements by Bob Brookmeyer, Marty Paich and Bill Holman, Lewis and his group (which features Charlie Mariano on alto and tenor, Bill Holman doubling on tenor and baritone, trumpeter Jack Sheldon, pianist Marty Paich, bassist Buddy Clark and the leader/drummer) perform originals by the three arrangers and Sheldon, in addition to the standard "You Took Advantage of Me." The enjoyable boppish music is quite colorful. ~ Scott Yanow

Considering his talents, arranger Bill Holman has led relatively few recording sessions through the years. This formerly rare big-band set from 1958 (originally on the Andex label and reissued on CD by V.S.O.P.) features a 15-piece band filled with West Coast all-stars. Among the soloists on these five standards and four originals are trombonists Frank Rosolino, Carl Fontana, and Ray Sims; altoists Charles Mariano and Herb Geller; trumpeter Jack Sheldon; Richie Kamuca on tenor; pianist Victor Feldman; and Holman himself on tenor. The leader's arrangements were quite distinctive (although not as complex as they would become) at this fairly early stage, and the results are a big-band album that still sounds fresh nearly four decades later. ~ Scott Yanow

Recorded in 2000 during the band's Clayman tour, this hourlong live CD -- consisting mainly of songs from the Clayman, Colony, and Whoracle albums -- gives a good idea why In Flames has earned such wide appeal among metal fans. They're heavy and intense enough to satisfy a good portion of death/black metal listeners, but they also have a melodic flair and a general old-fashioned metal spirit likely to resonate with people more at home with bands like Iron Maiden or Rainbow. And while singer Anders Fridén's raspy, shouted vocals are mainly expressions of anguish and personal pain, these feelings are offset by the hopeful and often triumphant tone of the guitars.
