| | Clora Bryant Gal With A Horn CD Clora Bryant Discography of CDs
This VSOP CD (which reissues a Mode LP from 1957) features Bryant heading a quartet (comprised of pianist Roger Fleming, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Bruz Freeman) that is sometimes augmented by Walter Benton on tenor and trumpeter Normie Faye (who sticks to section work). Bryant, who also sings, does a fine job of interpreting eight standards, with the highlights including "Sweet Georgia Brown," "Tea for Two," and "This Can't Be Love." ~ Scott Yanow

Gal With A Horn album
$11.49 Trumpeter/arranger Fagerquist defines the typical West Coast cool sound, and his band plays every nuance, phrase, and measure in hushed tones as a reserved, attractive, easily likable pure jazz persona. The band features such notables as alto saxophonist Herb Geller, valve trombonist Bob Enevoldsen, pianist/arranger Marty Paich, and drummer Mel Lewis. Lesser knowns such as second trumpeter Ed Leddy, baritone saxophonist Ronnie Lang, bassist Buddy Clark, and French horn player Vince DeRosa prove their mettle amongst the tall California redwood big names. The octet plays eight reworked standards, some like "Easy to Love" much cooler than the others, and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" a fine, full, and mellow ballad, both trumpet led. Though typical of '50s cool, "Aren't You Glad You're You?" has a hopping "Would You Like to Swing on a Star"-type melody, trumpet and trombone upfront, piano setting up the horns who throw this melody down, while the easy swinger "All the Things You Are" is somewhat predictable but rich in harmonic content. It's clear this is Fagerquist's session and he deals the melodic cards on "The Song Is You," the others playing a second line, then the whole section counterpoints the third. They're all over the place, bouncing here and there during "Time After Time," and DeRosa leads into ...
| | Eddie Costa Quintet CD (1957)
Gal With A Horn CD music
$9.89 Eddie Costa made only a few dates as a leader prior to his sudden death as a result of an automobile accident at the age of 31; this 1957 session is the best of them. Alternating between piano and vibes, Costa leads a quintet that includes Phil Woods, Art Farmer, Teddy Kotick, and Paul Motian, featuring enjoyable interpretations of "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and Dave Brubeck's still fairly new "In Your Own Sweet Way," the latter of which focuses on Costa's vibes and Farmer's muted trumpet, with Woods switching to the piano. Each of the originals by Costa, Woods, and Farmer is stimulating, although they have undeservedly languished in obscurity. Recorded for the long-defunct Mode label, V.S.O.P. reissued this forgotten treasure on CD in 1992. ~ Ken Dryden

Gal With A Horn CD music
$13.79 The other tracks from June 1963 feature a front line of Bolton, the obscure alto saxophonist Earl Anderza, young tenor saxophonist Hadley Caliman, and pianist Roosevelt Wardell's trio. Anderza has a strained legato sound that underscores the post-bop track "Joe & I," while Bolton's completely sad brass sound identifies the 100-percent regretful "Midnight Lament." It should come as no surprise that Bolton and Anderza were clashing, battling for solo time. In Oklahoma, eight inmates including Bolton join music director and artist in residence Dr. Paul Brewer (at the time of this writing employed at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI) and bassist Elisha Martin for four numbers. Brewer penned the unsteady "Monk's Tunnel" and doubles on trombone or Fender Rhodes piano as Bolton and fellow trumpeter Monty Boyd ease into a modern swing. "John's Tune" is co-written by Brewer and John Pemberton, one of two guitarists in the ensemble, as the trumpeters sing in unison for a contemporary ...

The inclusion of the Paul Simon title cut (which is pretty catchy) and an 11-minute, four-song "Midnight Cowboy Medley" may make one think that this is a fairly commercial Buddy Rich big-band disc. But the arrangements are by Bill Holman, Don Piestrup and Roger Neumann; the other songs are originals by the trio, and among the soloists are altoists ...
