pianist Paul Smith, Tony Rizzi 1953

Personnel: Paul Smith (piano); Tony Rizzi (guitar); Sam Cheifetz (bass); Irv Cottler (drums).
Recorded at Radio Recorders, Hollywood, California on November 13, 1953.
Originally released as two separate EPs in 1953.
This CD reissue of a set originally cut for Tampa is a pleasant surprise. Pianist Paul Smith, who sometimes overwhelms music with his technique, pays tribute to the Nat "King" Cole Trio on several of the numbers. The presence of guitarist Tony Rizzi (playing in a Charlie Christian vein) is a major asset, while bassist Sam Cheifetz and drummer Irv Cottler are excellent in support. The original program is augmented by five extra alternate takes. Highlights include the delightful "Fine, Sweet & Tasty," "Crazy Rhythm," and "Got a Penny." Overall, this swinging affair is one of the most enjoyable of all of Paul Smith's many recordings. ~ Scott Yanow

Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" ...

Distillation
Erin McKeown Distillation CD  (2000)

Fine, Sweet And Tasty
CD $13.89  Audio Samples
At age 22, Erin McKeown, proficient on bass, piano, electric and acoustic guitars as well as banjo and mandolin, has come a long way in the brief three years she's been plying her art.A Virginia native and current resident of Providence, RI, McKeown is categorically elusive, a characteristic she attributes to her restless nature and penchant for musical adventure.Self-financed and written and recorded on weekends over a period of 3 months in a farmhouse in Western Massachusetts, McKeown's sophomore release DISTILLATION boasts of vocals, drums and guitar sounds that were captured with a single tube microphone, in stairwells, kitchen cupboards, and bedrooms. Erin has toured the country for the better part of three years, wooing audiences with her enthusiasm, charm and quick-witted honesty. To date, her two cassette-only and CD re-issued releases have sold nearly 7,000 copies, all almost exclusively at gigs and over the internet. As McKeown bops, strums, swings, rocks, and struts her way through pop, jazz, blues, and Tin Pan Alley, DISTILLATION might be the biggest surprise you hear this year. Personnel includes: Erin McKeown (vocals, various instruments); Dave Chalfant
(electric guitar, upright & electric basses, percussion, samples); Katryna Nields, Beth Amsel (background vocals).
Recorded at Sackamusic Studios, Amhearst, Massachusetts between October 1999 & January 2000.
Personnel: Erin McKeown (acoustic guitar); Dave Chalfant (acoustic guitar); Lorne Entress, Dave Hower (drums); Ed Mckeown, Katryna Nields, Ben Demerath, Beth Amsel (background vocals).
Distillation is an excellent name for this album. Rather than being of derivative of roots music, bluegrass, country blues, and folk, McKeown distills these genres. She melted down these styles, incorporated the spirit of them, and came up with her own voice. All but one track here is original. They reach back into remote, rustic regions ...
