This CD reissue of a set originally cut for Tampa is a pleasant surprise. Pianist Paul Smith, who sometimes overwhelms music with his technique, pays tribute to the Nat "King" Cole Trio on several of the numbers. The presence of guitarist Tony Rizzi (playing in a Charlie Christian vein) is a major asset, while bassist Sam Cheifetz and drummer Irv Cottler are excellent in support. The original program is augmented by five extra alternate takes. Highlights include the delightful "Fine, Sweet & Tasty," "Crazy Rhythm," and "Got a Penny." Overall, this swinging affair is one of the most enjoyable of all of Paul Smith's many recordings. ~ Scott Yanow

Fine, Sweet And Tasty album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known ...

| | Modern Jazz Quartet European Concert CD (1960)
Fine, Sweet And Tasty album
$10.55 Recorded live in Scandinavia in April 1960. Originally released on Atlantic (2-603). Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn and Jule Foster.
Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York).
Long considered one of, if not the classic album from the Modern Jazz Quartet, European Concert defines them simultaneously as a recording entity as well as a working band. MJQ presented jazz in the context of a formally structured environment, much like a chamber group in the classical context. Within the band, the groove of Milt "Bags" Jackson's vibes met the solid swing of Connie Kay's drums, the funky strut of Percy Heath's bass, and the elegant classicism of John Lewis's piano. The MJQ were able, in a context that pushed at jazz's boundaries from the outside, to create a music that swung without edges or fragmented harmonic structures. Instead -- as this album perhaps more than any of their studio recordings exemplifies -- they used concepts of time, space, meter, rhythm, and changes to weave together a seamless whole, ...

| | Erin McKeown Distillation CD (2000)
Fine, Sweet And Tasty album
$13.69 Virginia-born and New England-based, Erin McKeown's musical roots seem to lie somewhere in the deep South. Throughout her aptly named debut, DISTILLATION, you can hear echoes of Robert Johnson, G. Love, the Faulknerian landscape of the first couple albums by the Band, and most obviously, the rural mythos best explored, from entirely different angles, by those Louisiana-born Williams non-sisters, Victoria and Lucinda.
While nowhere near as helium-pitched, McKeown shares Victoria's fondness for odd, jazz-inflected phrasing, especially on the swooping vocal melody of the Tin Pan Alleyish "Didn't They?," on which McKeown soars and dives like a drunken seagull, or the Billie Holidayesque trills in "The Little Cowboy." What McKeown has in common with Lucinda Williams is her wry but essentially romantic, tradition-rooted but not bound lyrical stance. The countryish "La Petite Mort," with its sly sex-and-religion twining, would not have sounded out of place on CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD.
At age 22, Erin McKeown, proficient on bass, piano, electric and acoustic guitars as well as banjo and mandolin, has come a long way in the brief three years she's been plying her art.A Virginia native and current resident of Providence, RI, McKeown is categorically elusive, a characteristic she attributes to her restless nature and penchant ...
