The Bopera House, an outgrowth of the Metropolitan Bopera House, on this 1988 CD features trumpeter John Marshall, tenor-saxophonist Ralph Lalama, pianist Tardo Hammer, bassist John Webber and drummer Tom Melito. The music is essentially hard bop, whether it be one of Marshall's four originals, Webber's "So Young" or the six jazz standards (which include Fats Navarro's "Wailing Wall," Duke Pearson's "Is That So" and Charlie Parker's "Sippin' at Bells"). Although no one on this CD (except perhaps Ralph Lalama) is close to being a household name, they are all talented players who are skilled improvisers within the hard bop tradition. So, despite the lack of name recognition, this CD is easily recommended to straightahead jazz fans. ~ Scott Yanow

John Marshall-Tardo Hammer Bopera House
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop ...
| | Rob Schneiderman Back In Town CD (2004)
John Marshall-Tardo Hammer Bopera House
$13.85 An excellent modern mainstream pianist who is a bit taken for granted, Rob Schneiderman was actually one of the better jazz pianists of the 1990s. On Back in Town, he plays standards but often with subtle surprises. For example, the ballad "Darn That Dream" is taken up-tempo, Jobim's "A Felicidade" is stripped of its bossa nova rhythms, "Chega ...

| | Necks Drive By CD (2003)
John Marshall-Tardo Hammer Bopera House
$15.29 The latest effort by Australia's super trio the Necks is a darkly swirling journey into sound that encompasses jazz, rock, and hypnotic grooves, all organically played without loops or samples, to brilliant effect. Like a mirror image of Manuel Gottsching's classic E2-E4, Drive By is one long track -- over 60 minutes. It unfolds gradually. Chris Abrahams keyboards create the pulse that is gradually taken over by Lloyd Swanton's bassline. It's less than a handful of notes that creates the effect, but the layering ...
