Drummer Danny D'Imperio's fourth album as a leader is similar to his first three: high-quality hard bop with the emphasis on lesser-known tunes. Using a talented septet (with trumpeter Greg Gisbert, altoist Gary Pribek, tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama, the great bop pianist Hod O'Brien, guitarist Steve Brown, and bassist Dave Shapiro), D'Imperio revives such songs as Duke Pearson's "Tribute to Brownie," Curtis Fuller's "Time Off," and Benny Harris' "Reets and I." Hard bop fans will definitely want all of D'Imperio's well-conceived recordings, including this one. ~ Scott Yanow

The arrangements are quite inventive; the 11 rarely recorded songs are superior (including Quincy Jones' "Jessica's Day," Freddie Redd's "Thespian" and Lee Morgan's "Need ...
| | Danny D'Imperio Hip To It CD (1995)
Blues For Philly Joe CD music
$13.85 Drummer Danny D'Imperio and his septet (which includes trumpeter Greg Gisbert, altoist Andy Fusco, tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama, pianist Hod O'Brien, guitarist Steve Brown, and bassist Dave Shapiro) bring back to life obscure songs by Blue Mitchell ("Hip to It"), Hank Mobley, Bob Dorough, Joe Zawinul ("Frog Legs"), and others. The musicians really know the hard bop style well and, without just re-creating the past, they are very ...
| | Faces Five Guys Walk Into A Bar CDs (2004) Remastered; Box Set
Blues For Philly Joe music CDs
$40.19 Released at a time when lead singer Rod Stewart was exploring the Great American Songbook, the music presented on FIVE GUYS WALK INTO A BAR... reinforces the argument that the Faces were one of rock's great overlooked bands. The quintet's ease around a bar never diminished the organic musicianship that found them easily melding their love of rock & roll, blues, and soul.
Fueled by Ron Wood's stellar guitar work, Ian McLagan's fluid keyboard playing, and the rock-solid rhythm section of Ronnie Lane and Kenney Jones, the Faces shared space with Stewart's burgeoning solo career, but still managed to crank out four excellent studio albums in less than six years. Not only are these records all included in their entirety in this four-disc collection, but the band's official output is practically ...

| | Mustafa Al Sunni Songs Of The Sudan CD (1999)
Blues For Philly Joe songs
$13.35 The Sudan is a place in which singers and instrumentalists are known for their very organic mixture of Middle Eastern and African elements. This is true of a contemporary Sudanese pop singer like the jazz-influenced Rasha, and it is also true of a Sudanese traditionalist such as Mustafa al Sunni. Although al Sunni wasn't born until 1964 and was only in his early 30s when Songs of the Sudan was recorded in 1997, this CD contains none of the electric pop sounds of his generation. Very traditional in its ...
