| | Claude Williamson Hallucinations CD Claude Williamson Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
All songs written by Bud Powell or Benny Harris except "Blues In The Closet" (Oscar Pettiford), "Embraceable You" (George Gershwin/Ira Gershwin), "Star Eyes" (Raye/DePaul) and "Polka Dots And Moonbeams" (Burke/Van Heusen).
For his V.S.O.P. release, veteran pianist Claude Williamson performs six Bud Powell compositions, plus six other standards that the innovative bop pianist enjoyed playing. With the assistance of bassist Dave Carpenter and drummer Paul Kreibich, Williamson displays both the Powell influence and his own approach to bebop piano. The music always swings, has enough surprises to hold on to one's interest, and shows that Claude Williamson (who has been somewhat underrated through the years) was still in prime form four decades after his initial recognition. Highlights of this easily recommended disc include "Hallucinations," "Bud's Bubble," "Parisian Thoroughfare," and "Bouncing With Bud." ~ Scott Yanow

| | Marian McPartland Live At Shanghai Jazz CD (2002)
Hallucinations
$9.79 Recorded live at Shangai Jazz, Madison, New Jersey on April 24, 2001. Includes liner notes by Chip Deffa.
It's long been an adage that true jazz is best enjoyed live in a club setting where anything goes, and discs like this offer genuine support for that idea. First the history: The legendary McPartland is host of the acclaimed NPR series Piano Jazz, and has released over 50 albums with Concord in 25 years (most of them archive documents from the radio program). She first began playing with drummer Joe Morello in New York about 50 years ago, so it's easy to revere what's happening here as a powerful document affirming their legends. Bassist Rufus Reid rounds out the trio. Apart from the back story, this date, recorded ...
| | Steve Kuhn October Suite CD (1966) Remastered; Digipak
Hallucinations
$9.89 Composer and arranger Gary McFarland was well-known in the 1960s for his film-scoring abilities and his charting skills with mid-sized bands. McFarland was also, however, a jazz fan, and particularly one of scalar pianist Steve Kuhn. This project features Kuhn in the center of a program made up entirely of McFarland compositions, all but two of which were written specifically for the album. Recorded in 1966, it is an anomaly in the Impulse catalog of the time in that it did not pursue the free jazz realms with the vengeance that most of the label's other acts did during that year. It is also significant that it caught the attention of a young Manfred Eicher, who later signed Kuhn to his ECM label based on the strengths of this recording. Like Keith Jarrett, Kuhn is in the pointillist school of jazz pianists of the ...

| | Marilyn Scott Nightcap CD (2004)
Hallucinations
$9.55 Over the course of seven previous recordings, while establishing herself as a premier adult contemporary singer/songwriter, Marilyn Scott has carried on a quiet but steady love affair with the Great American Songbook. Her rendition of "The Look of Love" (from 1998's Avenues of Love) earned producer George Duke a Grammy nomination for Best Arrangement with vocals. Earlier recordings feature stunning versions of the classics "Let Me Be the One," "The Summer Knows," and "You Don't Know Me." On this ...

| | National Jazz Ensemble (1975-1976) CD (2002)
Hallucinations
$14.75 This production signifies a reissue of the original big band sessions recorded in 1975 and 1976. On this release listeners find bassist Chuck Israels directing the band through a series of 16 compositions by such luminaries as Horace Silver, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, and others, whereas Israels contributes three pieces. These two separately recorded sessions feature the talents of trombonist Jimmy Knepper, saxophonist Lee Konitz, and trumpeter Tom Harrell, along with a venerable cast and some lesser-known artists. In fact, pianist Bill Evans dropped into the studio to partake in the band's rendition of his lovely composition titled "Very Early." Otherwise, the material presented here is culled from three previously issued LPs, as this compilation includes the original liner notes along with the newly written producer's notes. The first-rate music provides the winning formula, even though successful big bands are akin to dinosaurs due to the cost-prohibitive nature of maintaining an entourage, whether in the studio or on the road. Overall, the ensemble touches upon a broad spectrum of the jazz vernacular, as they meld traditional swing with modern/progressive elements and a few attractive diversions. Simply put, the music is golden. ~ Glenn Astarita
Chuck Israels directs the National Jazz Ensemble on this collection of three fine LPs recorded in 1975 and 1976. The repertory ensemble plays ...
