| | Jon Quartet Metzger Spinner CD Jon Quartet Metzger Discography of CDs
Although the musicians on this CD are not that well-known (vibraphonist Jon Metzger, pianist Keith Waters, bassist James King and drummer Tony Martucci), they are all world-class. Metzger, whose style hints at both Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson while sounding fairly original within the hard bop tradition, is a strong improviser. He contributed all ten selections for the date, mostly vehicles for straightahead jamming that the musicians have little trouble digging into. A fine set. ~ Scott Yanow

Spinner album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," ...

| | Harry Allen Love Songs Live! CD (2000) (Import) Import; Germany
Spinner CD music
$20.39 Recorded live between 1993 & 1996. Includes liner notes by Hans Nagel-Heyer.
One of the more impressive "Young Lions" to come out of straight-ahead jazz in the 1990s was Harry Allen, a tenor saxophonist with a breathy, appealing tone along the lines of Stan Getz, Lester Young, and Zoot Sims. Allen (who shouldn't be confused with the hip-hop journalist) is no innovator; although Love Songs Live! was recorded live in different parts of Europe from 1993-1996, it recycles the jazz of the 1940s and 1950s. But there's no law stating that every jazz musician who comes along has to be an innovator; jazz has room for both innovators and traditionalists, and Allen is definitely an example of the latter. As its title indicates, this German release is a collection of live performances of ballads. Most of the time, Allen turns his attention to standards that jazz fans have heard time and time again, including "Stardust," "Every Time We Say Goodbye," "But Beautiful," and Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady," and one can't help but wish that he would surprise us occasionally and make some less obvious choices. Instead of giving the jazz world yet ...
| | Tom Lellis Double Entendre CD (1991)
Spinner music CDs
$12.39 Tom Lellis decided to call this 1991 release Double Entendre because the CD marked many "doubles." It was his second album, it marked the second time he was backed by bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJohnette, and it found him doubling as a stand-up singer and a sit-down singer/pianist. Lellis provides acoustic piano or electric piano on most of the material, although Allen Farnham takes over the piano duties on a few tunes. In a sense, it's regrettable that Double Entendre is Lellis' second album -- by 1991 (when he turned 45), the singer should have built a large catalog. But unfortunately, many jazz labels had overlooked Lellis when they should have been waging an all-out bidding war. This sophomore album not only makes good on the promise of Lellis' first album, And in This Corner, it finds him becoming even more confident and assured but no less risk-taking. Lellis really soars on Bronislaw Kaper's haunting "Invitation," but much to his credit, the Cleveland native doesn't devote all of his time to well-known lyrics. He also provides memorable lyrics for Herbie Hancock's "Tell Me a Bedtime Story" and Chick Corea's "Times Lie," both of which have usually been heard as instrumentals. And four of the tunes are Lellis originals, including ...

| | Ben Thomas Triskaidekphobia CD (2005)
Spinner CD music
$12.95 The title of Ben Thomas' CD, Triskaidekphobia, may make the set seem forbidding but actually the music is quite accessible. "Triskaidekphobia" means fear of the number 13, and has to do with the title piece being in 13/4 time. The music actually alternates between Latin jazz and hard bop and, although the vibes/clarinet front line may make one think of Benny Goodman, the music is more modern, if always swinging in its own way. While vibraphonist Thomas and his rhythm section are excellent, clarinetist Eric Likkel (who doubles ...
