| | Perfect When Squirrels Play Chicken EP CD Perfect Discography of CDs
WHEN SQUIRRELS PLAY CHICKEN includes a cover of Elton John's "Crocodile Rock" that isn't listed on the CD package.
More than a few Replacements fans expressed indifference to ex-Mat Tommy Stinson's last project, Bash and Pop, since it sounded more like a solo venture than a band effort. But those same fans will undoubtedly be more pleased with his new band, Perfect, which is much more focused, and in the expected drunken-Johnny Thunders guitar-rock style. The reason for this sudden refocus was Stinson's discovery of a backing band that excels in that aforementioned style, and has no problem keeping up with him throughout their debut EP, When Squirrels Play Chicken. "Miss Self Esteem" is a lazy yet sincere ballad, while the rest of the mini-album rocks hard. "Makes Me Happy" would sound right at home on a Replacements album, with its sloppy guitar riffing and group vocals. "Sometimes" is more controlled than the other tunes, but soon both "Alternative Monkey" and "Don't Need to Know Where" return the album back to its high energy level. And as a special treat to fans, there's a great, raucous version of Elton John's "Crocodile Rock," unlisted at the end of the EP. ~ Greg Prato

| | Beres Hammond Sweetness CD (1993)
When Squirrels Play Chicken EP music CDs
$13.39 This is a sensational set that bundles up a dozen Beres Hammond hits, throwing its net beyond the Penthouse and Xterminator labels, which are well-served elsewhere. With that said, buyers still get one Philip "Fatis" Burrell production, the fabulous "Move Along," but it rubs shoulders with equally heavy hitters from Steely & Clevie, Tapper Zukie, a trio from Richard Bell, Willie Lindo, and more. As Sweetness suggests, the majority of the numbers revolve around matters of the heart, and what a sweet group of songs they are. The title track is almost dizzy from all the sugar seeping through in an effervescent confection that's totally irresistible, and if it's "Sugar Yu Want," Hammond happily serves it up in heaping doses on this smash classic. And what woman can resist his pleas to "Come Back Home" when he fills them with such ...

| | Boots Randolph Some Favorite Songs CD (2009)
When Squirrels Play Chicken EP CD music
$21.49 From the Producer…I feel very blessed to have known Boots Randolph for twenty-five years. I first met him when my father, the late comedian Ralph Smith, was recording a comedy album at Boots’ legendary Printer’s Alley nightclub in 1980. I remember being blown away by Boots and his band. An opportunity to “sub” on Boots’ band one night led to him offering me the job full-time, and I have no intention of ever leaving! I have had the pleasure of producing several records on Boots through the last ten years, and this latest offering is something truly special for all of us involved in the making of it. Through the years, Boots has always had a “concept” in mind when he began a new project. Boots and I had talked many late nights driving back to Nashville about a new project – we just never seemed to come up with a concept that we were as enthused about after a good night’s sleep. One day driving to Boots’ home to talk about recording, it hit me. Boots is 78 years old, he has cut nearly fifty albums, he is playing as well as he has ever played – who needs a concept? Let’s just record a group of Boots’ favorite songs, songs he had never recorded previously. Well, there’s a concept for you. We discussed a few titles, and made plans to get together at the studio on a Saturday to “see if anything would happen.” Well, did it ever. The first ...
