Cooper is a competent guitar player, and occasionally a passionate one, but on his debut album he merely goes through the motions of '90s-style blues. Every major city has a blues-based bar scene and every weekend one can find modern practitioners ... Henry Cooper Slide Man Songs | 1. | Keep Waitin' | |

Slide Man album
$16.39 One wonders when getting something that is done posthumously, why wasn't it released before? Is it of inferior quality? Is there something the artist didn't like about it? Is it just to make a buck on the death of the artist? Rest assured, in this case, this is not done just to cash in on the name -- this work will stand with the music he produced while he was alive. These cuts were taken from various studio sessions over a 12-year stretch; the last three songs are taken from a live television special from 1989. The songs cover a variety of the flavors of guitar work that Gatton enjoyed playing and experimenting with. It is hung together with his phenomenal guitar work -- it's a wonder that anyone could be doing what he is doing with only two hands -- but, interestingly, since his death his legend has grown within the circles in which he was already known and has not spread a great deal further. Listen to the incredible work he does on "Pretty Blue." Before you get settled into a groove, he hits you with three rockabilly tunes that he loved to do, including "Dancin' Shoes," which he wrote with Billy Windsor (who did the vocals on this disc). If you happen to be into speed, see if your favorite guitar picker can play as fast and clean as Gatton. This man, though little-known, deserves some recognition for his blending and fusing of jazz, country, R&B, and rockabilly; for his mind-bending technique; and for the beautiful music that he produced. This is a disc that has something for any lover ...

$17.15 This album is one of the most excellent oddities in the Boogie King's catalogue. This is best described as John Lee Hooker does a funk album. Definitely not for blues purists. There are a few straight up and down blues numbers like 'Settin' on top of the world', and 'Five Long Years', but other numbers find John dropped straight into a well-oiled, psychedlic funk machine (replete with violin solos!). I'd recommend this album to open minded John Lee Hooker fans, and also those who are into Funkadelic. Beat Goes On.
In some ways this is a typical John Lee Hooker album; in other ways it is totally unlike any other he did. Being interesting can be a curse, however, as the music itself just isn't that inspired. Of course, if these tracks were released by an unknown that might be another story, but this is John Lee Hooker. Yes, this is Hooker, fiddling around under the thumb of an ABC contract and seemingly in the hands of producer Ed Michel, whose credits and track record of good albums is not to be sneezed at. Free Beer and Chicken has the sound of a collection of tracks that were salvaged from some ambitious but never finished project involving dozens of guests. That's one thing that is typical, or at least would become typical in the last, most high-profile decade of Hooker's career. His albums from the '90s became limousine rides in which faces from People magazine would wind up sitting atop the listener's speaker box, at least symbolically. Michel predicts this trend by inviting Joe Cocker as well as several other stars whose identities were lost when the label cheaped out on including the insert after the first pressing of the album sold out. Michel also invited some of the artists he was producing for ABC's sister company, Impulse!, creating some unusual partners for Hooker, such as Sam Rivers on flute and Michael White on violin.
