Bush's grunge-by-the-numbers is certainly well-produced. Under the guidance of Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley -- the kings of early-'80s British pop -- Bush turn in an album that follows all the rules and sounds of American hard rock, specifically Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Their songwriting isn't terribly original, nor is it particularly catchy. What makes "Everything Zen" and "Little Things" memorable is the exact reproduction of all of Nirvana's trademarks, only with a more professional execution. In other words, all the guitars keep rhythm perfectly and Gavin Rossdale doesn't shred his throat when he sings, he projects from his diaphragm. As far as pop craftmanship goes, it's actually quite impressive. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine The inevitable British take on the Seattle sound leans more toward Nirvana's distorted guitars and cynical lyrics than toward Pearl Jam's classic rock guitar riffs and sincere words. Forcing vowels out of his throat while moaning that "fame is a whore," Gavin Rossdale sounds eerily like Kurt Cobain might have with a British accent. And a few of the songs on the band's debut album, like "Little Things," with its four-chord riff and loud-soft-loud dynamic, openly invite the comparison. But Rossdale's tunes, which typically feature stripped-down verses invaded by SCUDs of feedback squeaks and guitar belches, unfold in an anti-pop way reminiscent of the darker bands in the Seattle pack. Choruses are often delayed, and not always recognizable. In their place, guitarists Rossdale and Dave Parsons build layers of distortion that follow the cynicism and confusion of Rossdale's lyrics without offering an easy release. The songs, whether about sex ("Body"), love ("Glycerine," an electric-guitar-plus-strings ballad) or terrorism ("Bomb," based on a real London bombing), share a feeling that nothing works out quite like it's supposed to.

One Of The Best Rock Albums Of The 90's When I was about 12 or 13 years old, I got this album and love it. Along with Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots and all the rest of them, Bush was definitely a force to reckoned with. They labeled this band "post grunge", but this is about as far from that as you can possibly get. It's hard to pick a favorite song off of this album, cause there all great songs. If you are a fan of 90's rock, buy Sixteen Stone. Submitted by Ryan (Westchester, Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
90s music is defined by this CD This album will go down in history as one of the best soft-rock albums ever. Classics like Glycerine and Come Down will forever be etched in my musical memory. Buy it, you won't regret it. Submitted by chrisbrown (Townsville, QLD, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Not Too Terrible ... This is another of those CD's I bought in my misguided high school years, that I just don't seem to get around to selling, or trading, or giving away, or just throwing out. The songs tend to be pretty catchy and enjoyable, in a muted, alternative, not-trying-too-hard kind of way. This is one of the better CD's from that era. $19.19 Laibach: Ivan Novak, Tomaz Hostnik, Dejan Knez, Milan Fras, Ervin Markosek, Peter Mlakar. With their albums often based around one concept, this two-disc collection of "anthems" by Laibach is filled with tracks that are best in their original environment, but for a sampler, it's perfect and fans get a fantastic bonus. The two descriptors Laibach dislike the most -- Teutonic and Wagnerian -- best describe the Slovenian band for newcomers, but as Anthems displays, they're much more than that. Any band that does goose-stepping industrial versions of "Sympathy for the Devil," "Get Back," and Europe's "Final Countdown" could be written off as merely clever, but Laibach are nothing if not great destructors of pop who skillfully put the pieces back together for optimum absurdness. Laibach's rebuilding of pop borrows from show tunes, classical music, soundtracks, and practically everything ...
