Following the success of singles "Mrbet," "Paradigm Shuffle," and "Sus-san-tics," Loop Guru's beat maestro Jamuud and bassist/guitarist Salman Gita crafted this full-length debut of global-minded ambient techno for the North-South label. Dance music, by nature, has a precariously transient quality. As hard as Loop Guru tries on Duniya to achieve something eternal, spicing up fairly pedestrian rhythms with a potpourri of world music flavors is simply not enough. Replacing synthesizers that buzz, bleep, and jolt the dancefloor are the ethnic tones of sitars, kora, tabla, and gamelan instruments that drift in and out of the mix. Though this exotic array defines the album at its surface, closer attention reveals them to be calculated and inconsequential. This is dance music (techno, ambient, trance, take your pick) and should be judged as such. By those standards, Duniya falls short. The hip-hop breakbeats of "Jungle A" and "The Fine Line Between Passion and Fear" seem lazy and by design, while "Aphrodite's Shoe" dilutes the sound of Jamaican dub. With exotic samples in place, Loop Guru rides these rhythms as if on autopilot, occasionally teasing with a sonic payoff it fails the deliver. Eclipsing everything that precedes it with its staggering length, album closer "The Third Chamber (Pt. 4)" clocks in at over 20 minutes. There's very little activity amidst the song's tranquil waters as a sleepy pulse lulls the album to some indefinite conclusion. Like the music before it, it's the sound of a mystical, distant shore that never quite comes into focus. ~ Nathan BushAlternative Press (1/96, p.96) - "...Loop Guru incorporate a melange of First and Third World musical elements in a tactful, controlled way that could snag the conservative ears of AAA radio formatters while still being hypnotically groove-laden enough for chill-out room DJs....Loop Guru come across as ethnomusicologists who seriously know how to get down and trance out."
Option (3-4/96, p.111) - "...Rather than just grabbing hold of anything vaguely ethnic and tacking a rhythm onto it, Loop Guru uses ethnic samples of real musical interest and emotional depth..."

Personnel: Susan Werner (vocals, guitar, piano); Willie Nelson (nylon string guitar); Duke Levine (guitar); Steve Sadler (banjo, dobro, mandolin, ukelele, baritone ekelele); Eugene Friesen (cello); Mike Turk (chromatic harmonica); Billy Novick (woodwinds); Brad Hatfield (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ, vibraphone); (John Lockwood (upright bass); Dave Mattacks (drums); Crit Harmon, Mike Rinquist (percussion); The Hatfield Five.
Recorded at Q Division Recording Studios, Somerville, Massachusetts.
Susan Werner's Koch debut, and her sixth outing overall, is a collection of self-penned tunes in the manner, spirit, and flavor that spending a late night working in an office on Tin Pan Alley might provide. There is a beautiful, smoky, jazzy feeling that reminds one simultaneously of Hoagy Carmichael's more laid-back moments, Jerome Kern's humor, and the deep nostalgic atmospherics of Tom Waits' early Tin Pan Alley-influenced material -- without the barfly surrealism. That said, Werner's latest is a thoroughly modern recording. From the opening piano shimmers of the title track, which opens the disc, she comes out with it straightaway -- "Coffee, ham and eggs/I can be your dinner" -- and seemingly throws all notions of modern-day ...

Soft Machine CD  (1968)

The classic 1968 debut from these British legends. Emerging from London's UFO Club scene at the same time as Pink Floyd, The Soft Machine was a near perfect merging of psychedelic rock, jazz, pop and avant-garde stylings. Featuring the trio lineup of Rob The Soft Machine includes: Kevin Ayres (guitar); Mike Ratledge (organ); Robert Wyatt (drums); Daevid Allen.
Includes liner notes by Arnold Shaw.
Liner Note Authors: Arnold Shaw; Martin Wakeling.
Recording information: 04/1968.
This set of songs -- recorded as demos by the Soft Machine's first manager Giorgio Gomelsky in April 1967 -- has been repackaged endlessly, and with good reason: not only are these the only recordings (bar one obscure single) featuring the group's original guitarist Daevid Allen alongside keyboardist Mike Ratledge, bassist Kevin Ayers, and drummer/lead singer Robert Wyatt, they're also a fascinating look into the band's earliest days. These nine songs are as close as the Soft Machine ever came to mainstream rock & roll; "Save Yourself" sounds basically like early Cream plus Steve Winwood on organ, and the seven-and-a-half-minute "I Should've Known" has an extended freakout section that recalls Pink Floyd's early work. (Interestingly, "I Should've Known," like the soulful ballad "Memories" and the swinging, jazz-influenced "When I Don't Want You," was written by Hugh Hopper, who wouldn't join the group for another 18 months!) It's hard to imagine this material hitting the Top of the Pops even in the halcyon days of 1967, since the band's sonic trademarks, including Wyatt's distinctively quavery voice and Ratledge's modern jazz tendencies, are already fully in evidence, but these nine songs are essential not only for Soft Machine completists, but also anyone who loved Nuggets, ...
