1939 & 1940 album
$13.39 On this interesting compilation released by Hep Records in 1998, trumpeter Harry James is heard leading his popular big band during sessions that took place in Hollywood and New York between June 1949 and November 1950. Most of the 25 selections were originally stored on 16" transcription discs which were distributed to radio stations to be used for recruitment purposes during Navy Show broadcasts, just in time for North Korea's occupation of Seoul on June 28, 1950 and the beginning of direct U.S. intervention in the Korean War a few days later. There are vocals by Art Lund ("Stardust" and "Body and Soul") and by a group of wholesome harmonizers known as the Skylarks, who were entrusted with songs like "Hurry Hurry Hurry," ...
| | Jimmy Dorsey At The 400 Restaurant (1946) CD (2005)
1939 & 1940 CD music
$13.25 Released in 2005, this invigorating Jimmy Dorsey compilation contains 19 selections recorded live at the 400 Restaurant in New York City between July 1944 and January 1946. More so than his brother, Jimmy Dorsey appears to have been relatively open minded about new directions in modern music. His willingness to incorporate elements of bop and what were then ...

| | Herb Alpert Christmas Album CD (1968) Remastered; Special Edition
1939 & 1940 CD music
$9.79 Despite the sometimes syrupy background vocals (courtesy of arranger Shorty Rogers), CHRISTMAS ALBUM is a fairly straightforward Herb Alpert outing, with plenty of uptempo numbers given the Brass's good ole Mexican cantina treatment. The rub here, naturally, is that the set is full of yuletide tunes, so "Winter Wonderland," "Sleigh Ride," and even "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" come across as swinging and sunny. With the exception of "La Mananitas," the album is comprised of traditional Christmas favorites.
The combination of holiday favorites and Alpert's cheery ...
| | Stanley Turrentine Do You Have Any Sugar? CD (1999)
1939 & 1940 music CDs
$9.89 Stanley Turrentine still has a sweeter sound than any other saxophonist, even at the age of 65. It's a joy to hear him play, even when the material is a little faceless and the sound is a little too smooth, as it is on Do You Have Any Sugar? Since Turrentine is a fine musician, there are moments to cherish scattered throughout the record -- the spare, soulful ballad "Far Too Little Love" or the R&B groove of "Back in the Day" or the bluesy "2 RBs," for instance -- but it often veers too close to smooth jazz territory, especially when ...
