This is as good as most sweet bands ever got in the big-band era, a set of 20 tracks taken from radio transcriptions that show off a swinging pop sound, drawing on the key elements of jazz but never pushing the envelope too far. This was a good band, with a sound that was hot but with room for Carle's piano flourishes. Phyllis Lynne's vocals are a delight to hear. The sound quality is generally good ("The Trolley Song" is among the few numbers that reveals noticeable surface noise), and the selection, apart from the absence of a performance of "Sunrise Serenade," is a good cross-section of the band's range and repertory. ~ Bruce Eder

vocals by Phyllis Lynne, Marjorie Hughes, and Paul Allen, 20 cuts

Personnel: Frankie Carle (piano).

Recording information: 1944-1946.

Frankie Carle Very Best Of The Columbia Years CD  (2002)

1944-1946 album
CD $10.69  Audio Samples
Frankie Carle's sweet band enjoyed their greatest period of popularity in the mid-'40s, when they ranked just behind Swing and Sway With Sammy Kaye and Les Brown and His Band of Renown, scoring hits like "A Little on the Lonely Side," "Oh! What It Seemed to Be," and "Rumors Are Flying," each of which hit number one in Billboard and/or on Your Hit Parade. Carle's recordings have been reissued only sparsely over the years, and this 25-track single CD with a running time of nearly 75 minutes is the most extensive collection of his original Columbia Records tracks yet released. With the exception of "Charmaine," which placed in Billboard's jukebox chart for only a single week, and "Twelfth Street Rag," another one-week jukebox-chart entry that was actually an eight-year-old Carle solo piano instrumental dredged up during the 1948 recording ban, it includes all of Carle's hits from the period 1944-1949. And since he didn't actually have 25 hits, there's more. ...

Melodic Miner's Daughter
Abby & Norm Group Melodic Miner's Daughter CD  (2003)

1944-1946 album
CD $12.95  Audio Samples
A To Z Music presents the Abby & Norm Group's second album, a jazz statement of considerable depth and artistry. The follow-up to the critically acclaimed "The Book Of Norman," the new CD features married couple Abby Aronson Zocher and Norm Zocher, both Five years after their debut album on their own A to Z label, Abby Aronson Zocher and Norm Zocher are back again, still leading a quartet that includes drummer Brooke Sofferman and pianist Bevan Manson. However, on Melodic Miner's Daughter the group is augmented on four tracks by saxophonist George Garzone, and whereas on Book of Norman Abby stuck to bass and Norm to guitar, on this one they trade off on both instruments throughout the album. Both are excellent guitarists with very different voices: ...
Jazz Cello
Ray Brown Jazz Cello CD  (1960) Remastered; Digipak

1944-1946 CD music
CD $9.89  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
On the last day of August and the first day of September 1960, bassist Ray Brown recorded his third album for the Verve label, focusing most of his attention upon the cello while Joe Mondragon handled the bass. The 11-piece band on this date was conducted by arranger Russ Garcia and included reed players Paul Horn and Bob Cooper as well as pianist Jimmy Rowles. The results were typical of late-'50s West Coast mainstream jazz: familiar ballads and friendly, uplifting standards, tidily performed. Some of the tunes reach back to the 1920s, with "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody" serving as a surprisingly hip link with vaudeville as Brown's pizzicato maneuverings are punctuated with punchy blasts from reeds and brass. If one takes the time to place this recording within an historical context, an impressive ...

The meeting of drummer Steve Smith, saxophonist Dave Liebman, bassist Anthony Jackson, and Turkish keyboardist Aydin Esen is a first. While all of them have played with one another in the past, this session for Flashpoint is the first time they've all played together. These ten pieces reflect a new hybrid of acoustic and electric. There are knotty tempo and harmonic changes that reflect the density and über chopsmanship of fusion, but there is also an element ...
