The Dixie Dregs truly came into their own as an innovative musical force with their 1978 third album, WHAT IF. Part jazz fusion and part progressive rock, Dixie Dregs defied genres as much as they embraced them all with their dense, kaleidoscopic instrumental expeditions. True to form, WHAT IF features individually outstanding performances by the Dregs' always capable members, which included guitarist Steve Morse (Deep Purple), bassist Andy West (Mike Keneally), and Rod Morgenstein (Platypus, Winger) among its ranks.

Digitally remastered by Fred Meyer.

Allen dude you're one heck of a violin player! I just think the violin in Night Meets Light makes the whole song! Let me back up though and say that my overall favorite is actually "Dregs of the Earth" and not "Night of the Living Dregs" as I previously mentioned. I'm sure the latter is excellent but I don't own it. Surprised only a Japanese reissue of this is available, albeit I'm sure it sounds great, it is expensive. Actually my very favority Steve Morse is one that is hard to find. Glad I have it but I'd like to have a remastered copy. It's "High Tension Wires". That one may rank up as one of the best overall recordings I possess. I never tire of it! Just terrific. Steve Morse is a phenomenal talent. I need to pick up some more of his works but I prefer his more melodic slower cuts over the brash up tempo works.

5 stars What If???
Yes Steve Morse is phenomenal! I've got a couple of his solo works and they are equally as powerful! "What If" is certainly their best overall release, but curiously; I thought "Night of the Living Dregs" was their finest overall collection! Suprised I'm not finding it digitally remastered?

3 stars Hey Allen
You can play in my band! I think the Dixie Dregs were and still are one of the best bands in the entire universe. Steve Morse is one of my biggest heroes and he actually writes back when he has the time. He gave me the most encouraging words about my musical endeavors. The DD's are the best!!!

All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original master tapes. Georgia's Dixie Dregs were one of the most popular fusion bands of the mid-'70s. By the time of this 1977 debut, fusion had become a distinct genre apart from the jazz-rock that preceded it. On the surface, it may seem like hairsplitting, ...

Poetry Of Love
Angela Hagenbach Poetry Of Love CD  (2004)

What If album
CD $20.25  Audio Samples
The name Angela Hagenbach may be new to jazz fans living beyond her hometown of Kansas City, but her sultry, restrained, and breathy vocal style is beautifully familiar -- at times, you might feel you're listening to a new Diana Krall project, but with a more exotic edge. This is especially clear when she plays it straight and sticks to the trio format, as she does on the easy swinging "I Can't Believe You're in Love With Me." The real key to Hagenbach's artistry -- and what will help her establish her own identity -- is her unique choices of style (journeying often into world music territory) and her love for a colorful delivery of very poetic lyrics. She turns Michael Franks' soulful "Tell Me All About It" into a cool, sexy bossa with a Rhodes undercurrent (courtesy of Roger Wilder). The bossa treatment of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "It Might as Well Be Spring" is similarly colorful. She turns "Dark Dreams," an original sonnet by lyricist Phyllis Becker, into a lively, witty Afro-Cuban adventure that allows her to express a deeper vocal timbre. Hagenbach then turns Becker's pantoum poem "You Keep Calling Me" into a brisk, gleefully percussive jam done in the Bahian afoxe style. Closer to home, she tackles "Blues Are Brewin'" by alternating her own seductive style with a hilarious historic dialogue with a mumbling Clark Terry, who also adds his inimitable muted trumpet expertise to the track. Other all-star guests who should help Hagenbach boost her visibility are Russell Malone and Jimmy Heath. ~ Jonathan Widran Angela HagenbachKansas City singer/songwriter, "Angela Hagenbach, is one of those rare jazz vocalists who finds more in a song than the composer penned. Certainly more than one finds on the lyric sheet. Like Sarah Vaughan or Shirley Horn, Angela Hagenbach inhabits a song, and breathes new life into her carefully selected material. "Poetry of Love" is the answer to the question, 'Where have all the great jazz vocal records gone?'" writes Mark Bacon Producer/Host, Jazz After Dark and Pan American Rhythms, KRVS 88.7 FM, Lafayette & Lake Charles, LA.In October 2003, Hagenbach toured Brazil with SRO concerts in Rio de Janeiro and Ilhabela where she previewed selections from her latest recording, Poetry of Love, due in stores, January 20, 2004. This star-studded disc features jazz legends Clark Terry and Jimmy Heath. Also appearing are Russell Malone, James Williams, Don Braden and others, along with her HOT Latin Jazz ensemble.
