The heartland's favorite stoners are back at it, this time promoting the wacky weed with a live album titled--you guessed it--LIVE. 311 is a band obsessed, and they don't hide it, with titles like "Homebrew," "Freak Out" and "Who's Got The Herb?" The set is heavy on their breakthrough albums MUSIC and 311 and light on 1997's TRANSISTOR and its emphasis on dub reggae. It all kicks off with 311's hit single "Down," mixing their trademark pounding guitar riffs and twin vocal attack. SA Martinez handles the raps and guitarist Nick Hexum does the singing, straying from the band's favorite topic only on occasion, to rail against bigotry and intolerance. Bassist P-Nut and drummer Chad Sexton are in sync throughout, going from punk to funk to reggae and changing gears on a dime. LIVE proves that 311's reputation as one of the best high-energy live bands out there is well deserved.
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
311: Nick Hexum (vocals, guitar); Timothy Mahoney (guitar); P-Nut (bass); Chad Sexton (drums); S.A. Martinez (DJ, vocals).

| | Wyckham Porteous Sexanddrinking CD (2001)
Live songs
$14.15 Wyckham Porteous begins this album with the title track, a jazz-oriented spoken word that brings to mind "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head. The backbeat also recalls "Looking for Clues" by Robert Palmer. It's a funky, disco-era tune that works after a minute or two. From there, "Feel Alright" is a pretty and polished pop/rock track that shows the singer's gritty, rootsy delivery. The song could use a bit of self-editing near its conclusion, though. "Get Happy" could be mistaken for John Mellencamp circa "Rain on the Scarecrow," a moody and somewhat dark blues-rock tune. Porteous carries this momentum into the first highlight, the rowdy Southern rock charm of "The First Time." The lyrics themselves are a cross between Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. "I feel as lucky as a horseshoe/Just about as rich as a Cadillac," he sings. One aspect you instantly notice is the range this musician has. It is something that is very precious if used wisely. A feel-good barroom dance tune is "Better Than I've Ever Been," featuring ...
| | Lowen & Navarro All The Time In The World CD (2004)
Live album
$13.19 The first proper studio album by Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro in over six years, All the Time in the World picks up pretty much exactly where its predecessors left off. Although a few songs, most notably "How Mighty Is the Silence" and the title track, seem to reference Lowen's intervening health problems (he's been diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease), most of the record consists of straightforward love songs like "Cold Outside" and "Compass Point." A particular high point is "Green-Haired Girl," which sounds like one of Don Dixon's lost classics of Southern-fried power pop. Prior to that joyous ending track, the preceding 13 tracks occasionally fall into the duo's persistent problems with pacing, tempo, and arrangement (that is, an occasionally frustrating lack of variety in all three), but taken individually, it's hard to fault the craft of these largely acoustic, rootsy pop songs. ~ Stewart Mason
"It was so great to interview a couple of guys who are neck deep in integrity and oozing talent." --Bob Edwards, NPR's Morning Edition LOWEN & NAVARROIf you want it done right, do it yourself. Lowen & Navarro didn't coin that phrase, but are leaders in the independent music world where it is the Golden Rule. Several years ago, when it became obvious their major label was going to set them adrift, L&N didn't get mad, they got smart. They hit the road, marketed CDs and other merchandise to their audience and utilized the Internet to stay in close touch with their fan base. And after a stint at a smaller independent label ran its course a few years later, they launched their own company, Red Hen Records, named for self-reliant character of nursery fables. Their persistence has now led to a moment of true triumph."All The Time In The World," is the breathtaking new CD from Lowen & Navarro, and is set for release on September14th. A "work-in-progress" over the course of the last several years, it features 14 new tracks penned by the duo in their inimitable style - confessional yet self-effacing - with stories of the heart, mind and soul that only Lowen & Navarro could write. In addition, a specially-recorded track, "Something More Than This," will be available only through iTunes.Eric and Dan found a unique way to finance the recording, marketing and touring for "All The Time In The World": entirely through their fan-base. "Several years ago," Dan explained, "we were approached by fans who understood the indie world and the difficulties in getting money to make and market the record. They offered to help. At first we felt a little uncomfortable because we knew the risks involved, but they kept at us. Eventually we said okay."That decision has allowed them to bring in Canadian ...

| | Jeff Merchant Window Rolled Down CD (2006)
Live songs
$9.59 Jeff Merchant is a purveyor of slickly arranged orchestral indie-pop with jazz and folk undertones. Merchant's "window rolled down" CD is one remarkably smooth listen, carrying the listener effortlessly along from auspicious start to fine finish. RIYD: Donovan, The Field Mice, Nick Drake, Belle and Sebastian. This Los Angeles-based songwriter is best known as a member of the cult fave psycho-eclectic group, the Lullabies (which also features the notable and nationally renowned Stew, Heidi Rodewald and Michael Whitmore). Their debut CD, "Lullabies' Lullaby", released in 2004, received national radio airplay, made a few top-10 lists and has even been heard in some European cafes.Merchant was also front man for the quirky alt-pop L.A. band, PG-13, known for its inspired and clever interpretation of Willy Wonka's "Pure Imagination" and for inventive songs about 99 cent stores and other urban realities. He also co-fronted the moody, orchestral pop sensibilities of a band called MetaTonic which utilized flute, violin and step bells as part of its sound. And he created the legendary alternative songwriter showcase known as, "Broken Mic", which held a regular residency at the world famous nightclub, Spaceland in Silverlake. Not only does Merchant's new CD have fellow Lullabies members playing on some of the tracks, it also features members of Brian Wilson's band and Stew's band, as well as Listing Ship and other distinguished Silverlake/Los Angeles musicians. And Stew produced two of the tracks on this CD.Multi-influenced, not trying to sound like anyone else, Jeff Merchant doesn't identify with any particular musical style or genre. He's more interested in well-written, compelling songs that have both a strong melody and a message.Smother Magazine review (Editor's Pick): Those who are tired of waiting for something to released from the Donovan camp can rest easy. Jeff Merchant's “Window Rolled Down” will satisfy those cravings nicely. His songs are amazingly complex with intrinsic orchestrations and beautiful vocal arrangements. The harmonies are catchy as are the song structures, each of which is as unique as the last. This is multi-instrumental indie-pop that would fit Brian Wilson. Excellent eclectic folk pop.
In "(Don't Look So) Distressed," the lyric of which gives Jeff Merchant's debut solo album its title, Window Rolled Down, the song's narrator is accosted by a motorcyclist at a stoplight who remonstrates with him for his hangdog look. "See, I've got these broken bones, but I keep riding," the motorcyclist says. "It'll get better." "I could've rolled up my window," the singer points out, but he didn't. One of the myths about the car culture that is Los Angeles is that all those rolling cubicles cut the citizens off from each other. But Merchant's L.A. is an interactive community in which complete strangers buck each other up. He backs that world view with his musical approach, a chamber pop style ...
| | James Duncan Future Past CD (2006) (Import) England; United Kingdom
Live album
$12.99 Hopes were high for the debut solo album by Duncan James, former member of multi-platinum selling boy band Blue, especially after fellow bandmembers Simon Webbe and Lee Ryan's debut albums both hit the Top Ten, and James had one successful single already behind him, the song "I Believe My Heart" from the show The Woman in White. The omens were not looking good when the first single and opening track "Sooner or Later" just scraped into the Top 40 and the second single, the piano backed ballad "Can't Stop a River," failed to even achieve that, even backed by the writing talents of Seal. Future Past was not a bad album, but every single one of the 12 songs, even the cover of Lonestar's "Amazed" was ...
