Holst: The Planets / Previn, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
$7.59 The companion piece to director Tony Palmer's documentary of the same name, Irish Tour 1974 was recorded that January in Belfast, Dublin, and Cork at a time when precious few performers -- Irish or otherwise -- were even dreaming of touring the trouble-torn island. Northern Ireland, in particular, was a rock & roll no-go area, but Gallagher never turned his back on the province and was rewarded with what history recalls as some of his best-ever gigs. Irish Tour 1974, in turn, captures some of his finest known live recordings and, while it's impossible to tell which songs were recorded where, across nine in-concert recordings (plus one after-hours jam session, "Back on My Stompin' Ground"), the energy crackling from stage to stalls and back again packs an intensity that few live albums -- Gallagher's own others among them -- can match. Highlights of a stunning set include dramatic ...
| | Xanadu CD (1980) Original Soundtrack
Holst: The Planets / Previn, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
$11.99 Hollywood never learns. Hot on the heels of box-office failures Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Can't Stop the Music, comes the roller-skating Olivia Newton John in Xanadu. This soundtrack is fluff stuff to be sure, but some pearls float amongst the mire. Lead-off "Magic" remains a fine single. ...
| | Hidden Beach Recordings Presents Unwrapped Vol. 1 CD (2001)
Holst: The Planets / Previn, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
$8.39 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Tony Joseph.
Unlike conventional various-artists albums, Hidden Beach Recordings Presents: Unwrapped, Vol. 1 does not feature tracks by a series of recognized performers. Rather, each track is performed by a group of musicians assembled for the purpose by the producers, who are the auteurs here. They are Tony Joseph and Darryl Ross. Joseph gets credit for the album's concept, which is to take rap songs and play them in a smooth jazz style. In such a context, Lil' Kim's "Crush on You" sounds a lot more like smooth jazzman Jeff Lorber's "Rain Dance," which was sampled in it, while Eminem's "Stan," minus Eminem himself, reverts to being Dido's "Thank You." ~ William Ruhlmann

| | XTC Coat Of Many Cupboards CDs (2002) Box Set
Holst: The Planets / Previn, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
$46.65 A COAT OF MANY CUPBOARDS contains outtakes, demo versions, home recordings, rehearsal extracts, acoustic versions and previously unreleased live tracks spanning 15 years of the band's history.
XTC have had several career retrospectives in the past, but never one like this. Over the course of these four discs, the British popsters' history through their years with Virgin (everything they did up until APPLE VENUS VOL 1) is rolled out with outtakes, demos, live performances, and some of the familiar original recordings. The deluxe packaging is thoughtfully annotated, with extensive notes about each song's composition and/or production.
The box is arranged chronologically, and the band's retirement from playing live after the release of BLACK SEA is mirrored in the deeper approach they began taking in the studio. Home demos even took on broader importance, as complex arrangements were honed before going into a proper studio. For the most part, the behind-the-scenes ...
| | Chicago XIII CD (1979) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Holst: The Planets / Previn, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
$6.49 While it might be a stretch to claim that disco in effect killed Chicago, as this effort exemplifies, the dance craze certainly didn't help the band, either. After the moderate success of its previous long-player, Hot Streets (1978), Chicago seemed to have the fortitude to be able to carry on in the wake of the tragic loss of original member Terry Kath (lead guitar/vocals). With the addition of Donnie Dacus (guitar/vocals) and producer Phil Ramone, Chicago scored a pair of strong Top 40 hits with "No Tell Lover" and "Alive Again." By mid-1979, the fickle pop music tides had fully turned toward the beat-intensive drone of disco. Somewhere along the line the rhythm temporarily fixated the band -- much in the same way a deer reacts to oncoming headlights. As Chicago 13 (1979) proves, the results in either instance are not pretty. The nine-plus minute "extended" opener, "Street Player," could easily be mistaken for a Village People number. The same fate befalls the overtly funky and urban-influenced "Paradise Alley." Interestingly, the latter was originally slated as the title track from a concurrent Sylvester Stallone snoozer of the same name. The disc does contain a few redeeming moments, ...
| | Chicago XIV CD (1980) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Holst: The Planets / Previn, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
$6.09 Despite containing a few hidden gems, Chicago's 14th long player went primarily unnoticed when first released in the summer of 1980. The concurrently popular music styles of new wave and punk, as well as the last remnants of disco, had all but abandoned the septet's dependably horn-driven pop ...
